Security Liturgy Corner The rich man s reality in today s gospel resonates with all of us. We desire to have enough so that we don t have to worry about tomorrow s needs. Providing for our future is responsible planning. The rich man thinks that building a bigger barn to hold all his material goods will allow him to rest on his laurels. What matters however, is the barn filled with life, love, generosity and compassion. Jesus challenges us in this gospel not to place our security in possessions, but in God alone. What do we need to clean out of our barn to make room for God?

ALBERT THE GREAT Alameda, CA July 31, 2016 Effective Friday, July 1, 2016, the Diocese of Oakland has implemented the new Safe Environment training called VIRTUS for both parish and school. TRAINING IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE ON SHIELD THE VULNERABLE. Therefore, ALL VOLUNTEERS & STAFF (CFF, CLW, Youth Ministry, EME, Lectors, Music Ministry, etc.) will have to train using this new system REGARDLESS OF WHEN YOU HAD YOUR LAST TRAINING. Online training is now available. Simply visit or follow the link through the Diocese website to register and take the online course. The office will directly see and record those who have trained. This certification is in compliance with our Retraining Calendar cycle and is good for 3 years. If you have any questions or if you need help with online training, please call the office (510) The SPN/SA Parish is looking for volunteers to join our Children s Faith Formation (CFF) program. CFF conducts religious classes between 10:15am to 11:15am on most Sundays from September to May at the SPN school. We have between 80 to 100 students each year being taught by a cadre of wonderful religious teachers called Catechists. We are looking for catechists at all grade levels from K to 7th grade. If you love working with children and would love to bring the Word of the Lord to them, think about joining our program. St. Vincent de Paul has always been actively helping with the needs of our community. The Alameda Deanery recently welcomed a refugee family from Afghanistan and we are helping them transition to a new life here in the United States. St. Vincent de Paul purchased furniture from the St. Vincent warehouse and donated these items to the refugee family. Our parish conference donated $1,000 to the Alameda County St. Vincent District to help supply backpacks and school supplies to 150 children from Oakland s poorest families. The St. Vincent de Paul Tiny Tickets Program is collecting partially used BART tickets. When they are turned in, St. Vincent will receive 100% of the unused value on each ticket. Parishioners can place these partially used tickets in the poor boxes at St. Philip Neri or St. Albert the Great church. Thank you for your generous support of this parish ministry! ALBERT THE GREAT Alameda, CA Page 5 Dear Parishioners, Many churches sense a responsibility to reach out to the world outside their walls, but they respond to this call in different ways. Churches might focus on the spiritual dimension of human need, helping people to develop a relationship with God. They might emphasize people's social and emotional well-being by providing services or advocating for justice, or they might blend these priorities. Ultimately, every church wants to reach out beyond its walls and nurture the feeling of community. Coming together as a faith community and involving ourselves in the outreach ministry of the parish, builds and develops within us a sense of belonging and family spirit. Our celebration of faith is not just what happens within the walls of church. It begins with our celebration in the church and leads us to the world, to lead and guide, to mend and heal, to support and to strengthen, to give and take. Our world is full of needs. There are countless opportunities and ways for us to reach out to those around us; we simply have to open our eyes. We have to train ourselves to see the world through a new perspective, What can we do to serve those around us? Sometimes it is even helpful to ask ourselves What could I do right now? The opportunities are endless, we just have to pause and notice them. It was a great opportunity last week, to come together as a faith family not just by giving our time and talent, but also to receive love and support in strengthening our spirit of one family of faith. It is my great joy to be part of this faith community of St. Philip Neri St. Albert the Great parish. I thank the members of the Outreach Ministry for their time, talent and dedication towards this ministry. I also thank all the volunteers who were happy to share their time in sorting, pricing and arranging all the items and to those who helped on the days of sale and after the sale. It is a reminder for every one of us that together as a community we can do great things. Many people are good at talking about what they are doing, but in fact do little. Mercy: the Heart of Peace will continue the movement that has inspired many men and women of religion to gather together to pray for peace since the first meeting, called by Pope John Paul II, in Assisi in Thirty years after the first meeting, the Spirit of Assisi reaches the West Coast of the United States in the Diocese of Oakland. The Meeting will embody the message that peace lies at the heart of religion, and that believers are called to be peacemakers and instruments of mercy. 7 Welcome the Stranger Update Our willing group of volunteers, representing all four Catholic churches in town, has continued supporting our refugee family. The family is snug in their now fully-furnished apartment (blessings to St. Vincent de Paul for all the caring contributions). Thanks to all of your contributions, both Mom and Dad have means to communicate with their families in Afghanistan. Communication is very important to young people thousands of miles away from family. Both Mom and Dad are from large families and their little son is the first grandchild on both sides. To better understand the culture we are dealing with, we have invited an Afghan gentleman to spend a couple of hours with us, answering our questions and giving insights into our brothers and sisters from across the world. The actual date of this get together will be published in the next bulletin if you are interested in joining us. We have tried to give personal thanks to everyone who donated money or goods to this project. If you have not heard from us and would like to receive a note, or if a written thank you would help when tax time comes, please let us know through our Chairperson, Anna Rossi, amrossi1238@aol.com. Again, thank you for your donations, volunteer help and prayers REFUGEE SUPPORT TEAM ALAMEDA DEANERY St. Philip Neri school principal, Jessica Murray and teachers, Cathy Kelly and Mary Lanctot recently visited the now retired Beloved Science Teacher, Mr. Bill Frank. He now resides in Reno and is doing well. Mr. Frank has been a very popular figure in school with his towering height and friendly smile. The school aptly named the school garden as Mr. Frank s garden.
