3 Daly Notes Just a few things for your attention this week. Members of the Saint Mary Women s Club, and Church of the Holy Spirit Ladies Guild have been working together for the last year, and now are one. I want to commend all of them for their efforts to reflect that we are one parish. The new Annunciation Women s Guild will continue provide the programs and opportunities for the parish as the two former groups have always done. We are still in need of a few teachers for our Religious Education program. Although most of our teachers are returning for the upcoming year, we will have some openings for this year s program. Please pray and considering sharing your faith with our young people. If you would be willing to volunteer, please call Sue or Terri at I will be on vacation from August I will be spending time at my sister s house in New Hampshire. I find the beach to be the perfect vacation spot. I m grateful to Fr. Josh, Fr. Kinnane, and the staff who will handle things while I am gone. Please pray for me while I am away and be sure of my prayers for you, as well. I am so thankful for all that you do for our parish. Readings for the Week of August 19, 2018 First Reading: Proverbs 9:1-6 Wisdom s house is her school and the world as a whole, complete with its seven foundational pillars. The banquet is her teaching. Everyone is invited to eat and drink at the table. Second Reading: Ephesians 5:15-20 Paul contrasts the wise with the foolish, and then presents his admonitions for his readers to act as Spirit-filled people. He also urges them to practice gratitude. Gospel: John 6:51-58 The famous Bread of Life discourse continues. Here John puts an emphasis on the Jesus flesh and blood as true and essential food. This eating of this bread guarantees eternal life for all who partake of it. Page 3

Your prayers have been a constant source of strength and courage for me, and your hundreds of cards, messages and caring thoughts have been companions throughout this ordeal. In the previous bouts, I was able to respond personally to most, but your most recent out-pouring of kindness, generosity, thoughtfulness and love is proving to be more than I can handle. Please, be assured that each one is read and appreciated. Your interest, love and care is a generous gift. I truly miss being an active part of our Annunciation family, and I look forward to returning soon. This coming Wednesday, August 15 th, I will see my doctor. It is my hope and expectation that he will direct the last of four in-hospital treatments. Then there will be an assessment and plans for the future. It is my hope and prayer for a return to the rectory and the ability to contribute to parish life. I continue to ask for your prayers and priceless supports. You surely are in my daily prayers. My twenty years of happy, blessed and fulfilling ministry at our parish is a great encouragement in my struggle. Please continue your lifeline of prayer and concern. Love, Father Bock

8 Saint Pius X, August 21 Those in poverty often go unnoticed, as was the case when Giuseppe Sarto the future Pope Pius X was born in The eldest of a poor Italian family, his intelligence and high moral character were perceived by their pastor, who arranged a scholarship for Giuseppe to attend both a respected high school and a few years later the seminary. As a young parish priest he served in an impoverished Italian village where he started a night school to educate the people under his care. His zeal, faith and good sense were recognized by his fellow priests and by age 54 he was Bishop of the diocese. Unlike the small villages he was accustomed to, the larger diocese was rife with indifference and apathy amongst both priests and parishioners. Recognizing that this laxity came from a lack of knowledge of the Faith, he worked zealously to teach classes in the churches and seminaries, and the seeds he planted led to a revival of faith in his diocese. After nine years he was elevated to Cardinal, and continued to work diligently to inspire faith in all the dioceses under his care. When Pope Leo XIII passed away 10 years later, Cardinal Giuseppe Sarto was elected as the new Pontiff, an announcement which made him cry with sadness as he felt neither worthy nor capable enough to have the world as his parish. He took the name Pius X and the scripture verse restore all things in Christ became the motto for his pontificate. As usual, he was dedicated to educating Catholics on the fundamentals of Truth, with a particular focus on educating seminarians. He authored numerous encyclicals, and is most well known for his Decrees on Holy Communion, where he encouraged frequent reception of the Holy Eucharist for all Catholics and lowered the age to receive First Communion. He continued to advocate for the needs of the poor, and was dedicated to uprooting the heresy of modernism, which sought to subject Eternal Truth to the popular belief of the day. At age 79 and one month after World War I began, Pope Pius X died peacefully, with the words I was born poor, I lived poor, I die poor as his last will and testament. Pope Pius X was a humble man who tried to live his whole life in and for Christ and worked to bring Christ to others. In our day-to-day lives, let us look to the example of this Saint, that through our actions and words we may be a living example of His love and preach the Truth to all around us. Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age. (Mt 28:19-20) The great Christian writer C.S Lewis once wrote, Christianity is either very important in your life or not important at all. The one thing that Christianity cannot be is mildly important. Do you know someone who is seeking meaning, importance, and fulfillment in their life? If so, Annunciation Parish is ready to help. We are seeking adults who are interested in the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults (RCIA) program. This program can be tailored to those never baptized, those baptized in the Catholic Church and never pursued the sacrament of First Communion, or those baptized in another Christian denomination who seek communion in the Catholic Church. The program would begin in late September or early October and culminate with receiving the sacraments at the Easter Vigil Mass on April 20, If this applies to you or someone you know, please contact the St. Mary Church rectory office at (860) or send an to Deacon Jim at deaconjimt@gmail.com.
