The Cherish Our Children Walk September 9th, :00 PM This year s Cherish Our Children Walk will be held on Sunday, September 9, 2018 from the Newington Memorial Funeral Home. Fatima/Divine Mercy Holy Hour will be held on Sunday, August 12, 2018, 2:00 PM at St. Joseph Church in New Britain. Please come to pray for personal healing and peace. Sponsored by the World Apostolate of Fatima. Readings for the Week of August 12, 2018 First Reading: I Kings 19:4-8 Elijah is forced to flee for his life into the desert. He even prays to die. But the Lord encourages him, even supplying him with food and drink. As a result, the prophet gains the strength to make a pilgrimage to a sacred mountain. Second Reading: Ephesians 4:30-5:2 Any offense to a fellow Christian also offends the Holy Spirit. Forgiveness is essential for members of the community. Love of one s neighbor is also an important part of Christian living. Gospel: John 6:41-51 The murmuring of Jesus present audience is very much like that of the ancestral Israelites when they did the same to Moses and Aaron. The crowd here rejects Jesus teaching simply because they know his family background. As a result, they cannot be taught by God. Page 3

8 Maximilian Kolbe - August 14 Life rarely turns out how we expect it to. However, if we are faithful to God, He will order our hopes and dreams into something much greater than we could imagine. Such was the case with Raymond Kolbe, a boisterous child who hoped one day to be a soldier defending his country, Poland. After a vision as a young man in 1906, in which Mary offered him a white crown (purity), and a red crown (martyrdom), he became devoted to Our Lady, and entered a Franciscan order, where he was given the name Maximilian. He felt that the conversion of sinners and in particular, Freemasons would happen through the intercession of Mary, and was thus moved to create the Militia Immaculata (Army of the Immaculate One). This holy army would use prayer as the primary weapon against evil, and sought spiritual renewal through total consecration to Our Lady going to Jesus through Mary. In 1918, the latest technology allowed Maximilian to publish a monthly magazine Knight of the Immaculate, and he built monasteries in India and Japan until he returned to Poland with health issues in He led a life of prayer until the Nazi invasion of Poland, when he not only set up his monastery as a temporary hospital, but also sheltered 2,000 Jewish and Polish people from Nazi persecution. The Gestapo later shut down his monastery, and Maximilian was arrested and brought to the infamous Auschwitz death camp. He was beaten regularly for secretly offering Mass and hearing confessions amongst the other captives. After a prisoner tried to escape, the Gestapo selected 10 men for execution as a warning to the others. Knowing one of the men had a family, Maximilian stepped forward, offering to take his place. The Nazis accepted the exchange, and all 10 were left in a small cell to die of dehydration and starvation. Maximilian led the other prisoners in peaceful prayer until he was the only one alive after two weeks, at which point the Nazis injected him with carbolic acid. While Saint Maximilian is most well known for his heroic sacrifice in Auschwitz, it is perhaps his work forming the Militia Immaculata that has had the greatest effect in the world, as this holy army is still active and open to any Catholic to join today. Just as Our Lord turned St. Maximilian s desire to serve in the military into something much greater (the Militia Immaculata), let us place our trust in the Lord, directing our hopes and dreams to Him, knowing that He will use them to bring about something greater than our human minds could imagine. Page 8 THE LEGION OF MARY Please prayerfully consider, with the guidance of the Holy Spirit, joining the Legion of Mary as either a regular active member, or an Auxiliary member. We meet weekly for our meeting, and also volunteer at two local facilities where we pray the Rosary and visit with the residents. We ve been waiting for YOU! There is absolutely no obligation. Please call for more information.
