2 16th Sunday in Ordinary Time Saint of the Week: St. James the Greater Feast Day: July 25 He walked along a little farther and saw James, the son of Zebedee, and his brother John. They too were in a boat mending their nets. Then he called them. So they left their father Zebedee in the boat along with the hired men and followed him. (Mark 1:19-20). This is how we are introduced to Saint James, brother of John the Evangelist. Little is known of Saint James outside the Scriptures, but within their pages we know he was an apostle of Jesus, and he was present at the Transfiguration. We can infer from the Gospels that Saint James was ambitious and enthusiastic in his following of Jesus. Following Christ s Resurrection, and before his own death, Saint James traveled and spread the Gospel across Israel and into the Roman Empire, spending nearly 40 years ministering to the people of Spain. He was likely the first of the apostles to be martyred, as recorded in Acts 12:1-3a: About that time King Herod laid hands upon some members of the church to harm them. He had James, the brother of John, killed by the sword, and when he saw that this was pleasing to the Jews he proceeded to arrest Peter also. St. James followers brought his remains to Compostela, Spain, where they currently rest within the Cathedral of Santiago de Compostela. Pilgrims throughout Church history have made their way to visit the remains of St. James, walking hundreds of miles to spend time in the presence of one who knew Christ. Even today, people of all faiths make the 600-kilometer trek across Spain to unite their prayers and joyful sufferings with one another, with the saints who have also made the journey (like St. Francis of Assisi), and with St. James himself. While we might not be physically able to walk 600 kilometers, or evangelize a country, we can spread the messages of the Gospel with our lives to those around us every day. Sacramental Ministries Baptism To schedule a Baptism, please contact the rectory for an initial meeting and a parent preparation session. Marriage Please call the rectory at least six months in advance. Couples meet with Father Shawn for an initial pastoral conversation before a wedding date can be set. Please do not make other plans until a date has been confirmed with the parish. For the Sick We are happy to visit with the homebound. If you or a loved one would like a home visit, Holy Communion or the Anointing of the Sick, please contact the rectory. Page 2

A Synod is a gathering of bishops from all over the world, called by the Pope, to reflect on contemporary issues of faith and life. The word synod means, to walk together, as one Catholic (universal) Church. We are asking for your feedback so that we can share this collective information with Archbishop Blair. This information will also help all of us in the archdiocese to know ways we can walk with you and serve you better. May God bless you with a peaceful and enjoyable summer and we look forward to your responses! To fill out the Archdiocesan Survey for Young People, please go to: Thank you in advance for participating in this survey! St. Paul tells us that the Spirit teaches us how to pray. By the light of the Spirit, we can discern between the wheat and weeds in our life, and our desires. Ask the Holy Spirit how to live your vocation.
