4 Driving down I 35, not too far from the Iowa Minnesota border, I saw the sign. Hope-1 mile. There are gads of small towns in Minnesota. Most have no sign posts indicating how many miles to the town. Most just creep up on you and then whiz past as you leave. But Hope. Hope is different. On this occasion Sandy and I were driving down to see my dad for what would be the last time. Hope-1 mile. How many times have I passed by this sign? I ve been cognizant of this little dot on the map for many years. Never once have I taken the exit though. Never once have I visited Hope. My mom had called and said I think you d better come. Will dad still be there when we got there? If so, to what extent would he be able to communicate. What hope was there? When you re travelling by car and in need of an exit, any sign that says one mile is welcomed. One mile isn t that far. You can make one mile. 10 miles, maybe. 30 miles, well that is a stretch. Some roadways begin to advertise exits nearly 100 miles away. But a mile. A mile is doable. A mile is, yes I can hold on that long. A mile is, well, a mile. We don t know with certainty how long the stretch of road Jesus was greeted with branches swaying and coats laid out before him as he came into Jerusalem on a donkey. Maybe a mile? Those folks had hope. Hope of a savior. Hope of a person who would turn the nation around. Hope that things were going to get better. Hope was just around the corner- they could feel it. Later that week- another processional. This time the branches composed a weighty cross. This time the bearer of the coat was being laid out. His coat, a tunic, stained with his blood from gashes in his back and dripping from his head. We don t know with certainty how long the via dolorosa is. Maybe a mile? The gospels don t record Jesus emotional state in relation to the physical pain he endured. Was he thinking Can I make this mile? He knew hope will be delivered to centuries of people because he travelled this road. The exit to Hope was marked at Golgotha. A road from Jerusalem to Emmaus a couple of guys walking home. Heavy hearts. Attempting to talk out what might be next and what had transpired. Someone joins them and chats them up. I ve seen it before. Asking questions you already know the answer, but, for whatever reason, desire to hear an engagement. How long was this road? A little better than two miles. When did the third companion appear? Maybe a mile? Hope doesn t need acres of forest or racks of coats. Just a rest stop- close enough to sense we can get there. Big enough to take a breather. Small enough to prompt us to keep on going, not to linger. We all need Hope. Life is going to have times when the engine light blares red or we can t hold it any longer. One mile to Hope? God is right here. Pull into His side. Run to His arms. Linger there for a while. Take a souvenir savior-ner. A word from His word. A song from His heart. Then go. Go. God has travelled this road before. He knows the Way and He is with you. 1 mile to Hope. You can do it. Ybic Pastor Randy

The program is designed to help these families find permanent housing within 90 days, while addressing the root causes of homelessness for each family through counseling, educational programs, and case management. The goal is to allow children to remain enrolled in New Ulm schools while their families become established. Sometimes their school is the only stability available to these children. NUMAS House opened its doors in August 2016 and the first family moved into the shelter within 48 hours. NUMAS Haus can house up to three families at a time. There is currently a waiting list for residence at NUMAS Haus. Karla Diehn is the Shelter Coordinator. She has a strong passion for helping others, recognizing the worth and dignity of each individual, and guiding them on a path for a successful future. We are excited that Karla is coming to share with us. Make plans to join other Southern District women at the Spring Gathering in New Ulm on January 21st! 6 Importance of Potassium in Your Diet When it comes to strategies to lower blood pressure, sodium gets all of the attention. But too little potassium could be just as important as too much salt. When you get enough potassium, it helps your body excrete sodium. That eases tension in the blood vessel walls, which can help lower blood pressure. The mineral also helps blood vessels relax. The recommended daily dose of potassium is 4,700 mg. Having at least eight servings of fruit and vegetables daily is ideal. Here are some foods high in potassium: acorn squash, spinach, baked potato, salmon, yogurt, banana, cantaloupe, and pistachios.
