Sisters and brothers in hrist, God has gathered us together as His children, and has spoken to us through His Son. Even though we have often heard with our ears, we have not listened with our hearts. We have not honored and obeyed Him with our words and actions. We have not glorified Him with our lives. Let us confess our sins before Him, and ask for His forgiveness. Have mercy on me, O God, according to Your steadfast love; according to Your abundant mercy blot out my sins. Wash me from my iniquity, and cleanse me from my sin! For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against You, You only, have I sinned and done what is evil in Your sight, so that You may be justified in Your words and blameless in Your judgment. God has heard our prayer and set us free from sin and death. He sent His only Son to be born as a human, to die in our place, and to rise again to new life for our forgiveness and salvation. 5 Epistle: hilippians 3:4b-14 If anyone else thinks he has reasons to put confidence in the flesh, I have more: circumcised on the eighth day, of the people of Israel, of the tribe of Benjamin, a Hebrew of Hebrews; in regard to the law, a harisee; as for zeal, persecuting the church; as for legalistic righteousness, faultless. But whatever was to my profit I now consider loss for the sake of hrist. What is more, I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing hrist Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain hrist and be found in him, not having a righteousness of my own that comes from the law, but that which is through faith in hrist--the righteousness that comes from God and is by faith. I want to know hrist and the power of his resurrection and the fellowship of sharing in his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, and so, somehow, to attain to the resurrection from the dead. Not that I have already obtained all this, or have already been made perfect, but I press on to take hold of that for which hrist Jesus took hold of me. Brothers, I do not consider myself yet to have taken hold of it. But one thing I do: Forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in hrist Jesus. 6 The Holy Gospel: Luke 20:9-20 The Holy Gospel according to St. Luke, the twentieth chapter. Glory to You, O Lord. He went on to tell the people this parable: "A man planted a vineyard, rented it to some farmers and went away for a long time. At harvest time he sent a servant to the tenants so they would give him some of the fruit of the vineyard. But the tenants beat him and sent him away empty-handed. He sent another servant, but that one also they beat and treated shamefully and sent away emptyhanded. He sent still a third, and they wounded him and threw him out. "Then the owner of the vineyard said, `What shall I do? I will send my son, whom I love; perhaps they will respect him.' "But when the tenants saw him, they talked the matter over. `This is the heir,' they said. `Let's kill him, and the inheritance will be ours.' So they threw him out of the vineyard and killed him. "What then will the owner of the vineyard do to them? He will come and kill those tenants and give the vineyard to others." When the people heard this, they said, "May this never be!" Jesus looked directly at them and asked, "Then what is the meaning of that which is written: " `The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone'? Everyone who falls on that stone will be broken to pieces, but he on whom it falls will be crushed." The teachers of the law and the chief priests looked for a way to arrest him immediately, because they knew he had spoken this parable against them. But they were afraid of the people. Keeping a close watch on him, they sent spies, who pretended to be honest. They hoped to catch Jesus in something he said so that they might hand him over to the power and authority of the governor. 7 RAYER OF THE HURH Let us pray for the whole people of God in hrist Jesus and for all people according to their needs. elebrating the presence of the Lord Jesus hrist through Your Word and Sacrament, we pray for an increase of Your Word in our midst, asking that God s messengers may continue to speak with power among us and bring all people the good news of sins forgiven. Blessed Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer and respond according to Your gracious will. In the same manner that Jesus was faithfully in Your house, O God, direct us to love this place where Your presence dwells and to cherish the fellowship of faith and love that we enjoy as God s holy people. Blessed Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer and respond according to Your gracious will. Remembering St. Timothy and other leaders of the first hristians, we ask a special blessing on those who guide the spiritual welfare of God s people. We pray for those who serve in leadership positions in our national Synod, our district, and our local congregation. Help the hurch serve You through the apostles example and witness, enabling us to grow in devotion and dedication to Jesus name. Blessed Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer and respond according to Your gracious will.
