The words of this well-loved hymn remind us that our justification our being made right with God comes as a gift from His storehouse of mercy. Even when sin is as its worst, the mercy of God is more powerful. Knowing that we are justified by His triumphant grace shapes our prayers and enlivens our praises. OENING SENTENES When the goodness and loving kindness of God our Savior appeared, He saved us, not because of works done by us in righteousness, but according to His own mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewal of the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out on us richly through Jesus hrist our Savior, so that being justified by His grace we might become heirs according to the hope of eternal life. She said, With the help of the Lord I have brought forth a man. Later she gave birth to his brother Abel. Now Abel kept flocks, and ain worked the soil. In the course of time ain brought some of the fruits of the soil as an offering to the Lord. But Abel brought fat portions from some of the firstborn of his flock. The Lord looked with favor on Abel and his offering, but on ain and his offering he did not look with favor. So ain was very angry, and his face was downcast. Then the Lord said to ain, Why are you angry? Why is your face downcast? If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? To some who were confident of their own righteousness and looked down on everybody else, Jesus told this parable: Two men went up to the temple to pray, one a harisee and the other a tax collector. The harisee stood up and prayed about himself: God, I thank you that I am not like other men robbers, evildoers, adulterers or even like this tax collector. I fast twice a week and give a tenth of all I get. But the tax collector stood at a distance. He would not even look up to heaven, but beat his breast and said, God, have mercy on me, a sinner. I tell you that this man, rather than the other, went home justified before God.

We pray for the whole hurch, that through it, the goodness of God may be shared. We pray for those who lead the hurch, as did St. James, the brother of the Lord, in the very first days of the hurch in Jerusalem, that they may do so with devotion and humility. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer. We pray for the nations of the world, asking that voices that call for peace may be heard and that the rich bounty of creation may be carefully developed and thoughtfully shared. Lord, in Your mercy, hear our prayer We pray for our families and everyone in them. Especially we ask that there may be relationships between and among siblings that are marked with kindness.
