3 We read in the Gospels how Jesus in the midst of his busy ministry would take time away to rest, either by himself or with his disciples. He would take that time to both relax and to be in prayer with God, His Father. Each of our lives are full of exuberance, opportunity and hope. Our lives are also full of turmoil, anxiety and distress. But even as God created us to live full lives that enrich ourselves and others in his name, he needs us to stay focused on him so that we don t get off track. And to say focused on God means that every now and then, we must slow down. We must stop. We must listen. The season of Lent is fast approaching. Maybe this year our Lenten sacrifice could be to take time to still our minds, quiet our hearts and open ourselves to God. Jesus did. How about us? On Sunday, March 10th at the 10:00am Mass, we will celebrate a Communal Anointing of the Sick. In the Church's Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick, through the ministry of the priest, it is Jesus who touches the sick to heal them from sin and sometimes even from physical ailment. His cures were signs of the arrival of the Kingdom of God. The core message of his healing tells us of his plan to conquer sin and death by his dying and rising. The Rite of Anointing tells us there is no need to wait until a person is at the point of death to receive the Sacrament. A careful judgment about the serious nature of the illness is sufficient. When the Sacrament of Anointing of the Sick is given, the hoped-for effect is that, if it be God's will, the person be physically healed of illness. But even if there is no physical healing, the primary effect of the Sacrament is a spiritual healing by which the sick person receives the Holy Spirit's gift of peace and courage to deal with the difficulties that accompany serious illness or the frailty of old age. ~from the United States Catholic Catechism for Adults. Those who wish to receive the Sacrament are asked to inform the ushers and greeters in the back of Church of your intention. A reception will follow Mass in the Brick Building. On Saturday, March 9, 2019 at Neumann University s Mirenda Center, men are invited to join Catholic Men from throughout the Archdiocese for the 11th Annual Archdiocesan Catholic Men s Conference. Our speaker lineup for 2019 will be great. We welcome for the first time, acclaimed author and speaker Matthew Kelly and former NFL quarterback and legendary Philadelphia Eagle, Ron Jaworski. Matthew is the founder of The Dynamic Catholic Institute whose mission is to re-energize the Catholic Church in America by developing world-class resources that inspire people to rediscover the genius of Catholicism.. Catholic speaker, and acclaimed Irish tenor, Mark Forrest, will again provide inspirational accompaniment during a special Eucharistic Adoration. The Sacrament of Reconciliation will be offered, and the Conference will conclude with Mass celebrated by the Most Rev. Timothy Christian Senior. Lunch is included. Register at manupphilly.com Attention Engaged Couples...Our Parish is holding a Pre-Cana Workshop for couples planning to be Married in the Catholic Faith, on Saturday, March 2nd in the Parish Center. All will gather between 8:30 and 9:00 AM, and conclude the day by attending the 5:00 PM Vigil Mass which will include a special engagement Blessing. For additional information and to register, contact John Blisard at jblisard.nativitybvm@comcast.net or call Nativity BVM
4 The Knights of Columbus will be selling crab cakes every weekend for Lent starting the weekend of March 2-3. Please call Sal for orders of 6 or more crab cakes, soup and crab critters at Faith Formation Our next gathering of the Book Club will be Wednesday, February 27 at 7pm in the Parish Center. We will be discussing Bishop Barron s book Arguing Religion. Books are available at the Rectory Office for $10. Nativity BVM - Adoration Chapel Chapel Hours: Sunday: 2pm to 11pm Monday-Friday: 7am to 11pm Saturday: Closed Dear Parishioners, February is coming to an end and Lent will begin on Ash Wednesday, March 6th. As we begin to think about Lent and what we will give up during Lent consider adding a visit to our Adoration Chapel. One of the best ways to deepen your relationship with Jesus is spending some time in His presence. If you have any questions about the Adoration Chapel, I can be reached at nativitybvm@comcast.net or by calling the Rectory and leaving your name and telephone number. God bless, Carol Farnan The purpose of the Holy hour is to is to encourage a deep personal encounter with God Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen Access Code: JQGN73 Social Ministry and Outreach This month, St. John s Hospice shelter in Philadelphia picked up from our parish of Nativity BVM: 116 Casseroles, 52 Bags of Clothing and 3 Boxes of Toiletries. 6 LET S LOOK AT LITURGY: THE PENITENTIAL RITE The Eucharist itself is an act of reconciliation. But since the early days of the Church an act of simple penitence has taken place at the opening of Mass. This underscores Christ s call for reconciliation with others before offering sacrifice. And so in the Act of Penitence the assembly, proclaiming its sinfulness before God, shows that it is a community always in need of conversion, always in need of reconciliation with God and others. The Penitential Rite is not an Examination of Conscience; it is not Confession. It is a proclamation of faith in a God who is loving and kind and the source of all forgiveness and healing. The focus of the rite is not on us and our sins but on a merciful, reconciling God. Liturgical Ministries LENT AND EASTER ARE COMING: Why Not Join a Music Ministry Participating in music ministries may truly be a way to enrich your prayer life. Singing or playing with a group is a social as well as musical experience. Just try one rehearsal; perhaps you ll return and sing (or play) your way to more meaningful liturgical prayer. Adult Choir: Rehearsal in church on Thursday, 7 to 9PM. New members always welcome. Now is a great time to join! Children s Choir (Grades 1-8): Rehearsals in church on Mondays from 5:15 to 6:00PM. PREP students are walked to school afterwards by an adult. Guitar Group & Instrumentalists: Rehearsal is only once a month! We invite anyone proficient in playing guitar or other instruments. It is preferable that the player be in at least 6 th grade. The group plays at the 12 Noon Mass on the second Sunday of the month and rehearses on the previous Monday. It s a small commitment for a great experience.
