1 Trinity Lutheran Church Trinity News Volume 17 Issue 144 January 2017 Office: Web Page: trinitybenson.org Pastor: Art Wiese Secretary: Pam Anderson Council President Brian McNeill Custodians: Rosy Petersen Mission Statement Trinity Lutheran Church is a caring congregation committed to providing a place of worship to proclaim Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior. We acknowledge the authority of Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions. Growing in Christ as a community of believers, we share with all people the good news of salvation through Jesus Christ our Lord. Inside this issue: Council Minutes 2 Financial Report 3 Treasurers Report 4 January Servers 5 Statistical Change 5 Calendar 6 Usher list 7 Narrative Reading 9 Youth Happenings 11 Thank You s 11 Birthdays 11 Each of you must give as you have made up your mind, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver. And God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work. 2 Corinthians 9:7-8 Dear People of Trinity, Once again, it is budget season! The Stewardship & Finance committee is already hard at work on your behalf trying to prepare a new one for next year. It s not an easy task. They are to be commended for their faithfulness. Thank them when you next have the opportunity. In their book, Ministry and Money, authors Janet and Philip Jamieson open their chapter on budgeting with this claim: Each year churches make a statement of faith in which their reveal that which is most important to them This statement of faith is the annual operating budget. We might not usually think of it this way, but the truth is that, in whatever situation we find ourselves, we fund those things that we believe are the most important. Think of it in terms of your household budget. What s most important a roof over your head, heat and lights, food on your table? Of course! But maybe also maintaining a vehicle, saving for the future, and having a little fun from time to time? Or think of it in terms of government. What s important now keeping the peace, protecting our freedoms, build-ing and repairing infrastructure? Well, sure! Now, think of it as a congregation. What do you believe is most important? The Jamiesons admit that many budgeted items are routine, ordinary, and necessary expenses of operating a church, including staff salaries, building utilities and upkeep, office supplies and postage, and insurance, to name a few. Those are necessities. They represent the bills, which have to be paid. But there are other priorities as well. What about educating our children in the faith, or providing youth and adults alike with service opportunities, or enhancing worship with quality music, or reaching out and visiting the sick or the home-bound, or new people? What about the mission of the wider church? What about the work of educating new pastors, or starting new congregations or doing global ministry? Those are things we believe in too, aren t they? 10 Pastor s message continued from page 1 I m glad to report, in regard to this last category, our council has been very aware of the importance of fulfilling our commitments. It has been a struggle, but it looks like we will be able to fund all of the things we said we would. Now, we have to think about what are the things that will be important to us in the future? When Paul wrote to the Corinthians, in the words quoted above, he made it clear that everyone was to have a part in the mission of God. This was work for the whole community. It was outreach to the faithful in other places who did not enjoy the material wealth of the Corinthians. Giving was to be a part of their faith. It wasn t just contributing to items on budget. It was making real ministry happen for people who were not so fortunate. In the months ahead, I intend to focus on some of the work that gets done because of your faithful contributions. Here is a quick summary based on $100 of mission support (money sent to the SWMN Synod on your behalf) in 2014: $47.50 is kept in the Synod, $52.50 goes on to the ELCA, of that: of that: $30.61 pays for synod support $20.49 supports and program staff congregations and synods $12.00 goes to shared ministries $10.51 funds global mission $2.55 pays administration $4.20 manages Hunger and Disaster Relief $2.34 funds other programs $15.20 pays for Churchwide staff $2.10 goes to retiree assistance We ll take a closer look at what this means for us in future news-letters. For now, know that our budget is more than just a set of numbers. It s a statement of our faith! Peace be with you, Pastor Art Page 10 Trinity News
