1 ORDER OF DIVINE WORSHIP 6TH SUNDAY AFTER EPIPHANY February 17, :30 and 11:00 am Welcome! Whether you are visiting us for the first time or have grown up here at FPC, we are glad you have joined us for worship this morning! We hope you will feel welcomed today and join us again. - Gathering Around the Word - ORGAN PRELUDE... Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty - J.G. Walther GATHERING THE COMMUNITY Sharing Christ s Peace ORGAN INTRADA... Intrada on Lobe den Herren - R. te Velde **CALL TO WORSHIP Leader: From the comfort of our Western homes and prosperous lives, Community: We come hungry for a better world for all. Leader: In our society divided by power struggles and prejudice, Community: We affirm the power of your healing love. Leader: With the honesty of our doubts and insecurities, Community: We rejoice in your love for each one of us; All: seeking your blessing to make us whole. **HYMN OF PRAISE Praise Ye the Lord, the Almighty! **PRAYER OF ADORATION CALL TO CONFESSION PRAYER OF CONFESSION... in unison God of grace, we don t always recognize our privilege. Unlike you, we are quick to anger and slow to love. We remain stuck in our ways because we are comfortable. Help us to re-examine our views, to believe that we don t always understand what you ask of us. Help us to allow ourselves to be taken by surprise, to have our minds changed for your kin-dom... (Moments for personal confession) KYRIE Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. Lord, have mercy. **Those who are able, please stand.
2 ASSURANCE OF PARDON **GLORIA PATRI Glory to God, whose goodness shines on me, and to the Son, whose grace has pardoned me, and to the Spirit, whose love has set me free. As it was in the beginning, is now and ever shall be. Amen. PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION - Proclaiming and Sharing the Word - OLD TESTAMENT LESSON... Jeremiah 17:5-10 (OT, pg. 676) GOSPEL LESSON... Luke 6:17-26 (NT, pg. 60) TIME WITH CHILDREN If parents desire, following this time, children of 3 years and younger may go to the Nursery located in the north wing. At the 11:00 am service Children and Worship, for children 3 yrs. old - 3rd grade, meets after Time with Children in the Westminster Room (south of Sanctuary). Today s story is Jesus Makes Lazarus Alive Again. (11:00) SPIRITLINK SINGERS... Love the Lord, Your God SERMON... Sermon on the Plain: A Preamble - Responding to the Word - 8:30 am worship, continue below. 11:00 am worship, please see insert for Installation and Ordination of Church Officers. (8:30) **AFFIRMATION OF FAITH... from The Heidelberg Catechism What does God s law require of us? You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind. This is the greatest and first commandment. And a second is like it: You shall love your neighbor as yourself. On these two commandments hang all the law and the prophets. Can you live up to all this perfectly? No. I have a natural tendency to hate God and my neighbor. How does the knowledge of God s creation and providence help us? We can be patient when things go against us, thankful when things go well, and for the future we can have good confidence in our faithful God and Father that nothing in creation will separate us from his love. For all creatures are so completely in God s hand that without his will they can neither move nor be moved. (11:00) HYMN OF DISCIPLESHIP Take the Saving Word of God PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE (11:00 Choral Response) God of grace - hear our prayer 2
3 INVITATION TO DISCIPLESHIP PRESENTATION OF OUR LIVES AND OFFERINGS (8:30) OFFERTORY Hymn Take the Saving Word of God (11:00) ANTHEM... Blest Are They - D. Haas The congregation is invited to join in on the refrain, printed below. **DOXOLOGY Praise to God the Father; praise to God the Son; praise to God the Spirit: praise to the Three-in-One. Sing praise, sing praise to the Lord on high. Praise to God Almighty; praise to the Holy One. **PRAYER OF DEDICATION (8:30) - Sealing of the Word - + THE SACRAMENT OF THE LORD S SUPPER + INVITATION TO THE LORD S TABLE Leader: The Lord be with you. Community: And also with you. Leader: Lift up your hearts. 3
4 Community: We lift them up to the Lord. Leader: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. Community: It is right to give our thanks and praise. Leader: Holy God, creator of the universe.therefore we join our voices with all those who sing your praise: Community: Holy, Holy, Holy Lord, God of power and might: Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest! Blessed is the One who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest! Leader: We praise you, most holy God, for the gift of your Son, Jesus.offering ourselves to live for him in joy and grateful praise. Great is the mystery of faith: Community: Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again. Leader: Gracious God, pour out your Holy Spirit. With the confidence of the children of God, let us pray together the prayer that Christ taught us. All: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever. Amen. WORDS OF INSTITUTION PARTAKING OF THE ELEMENTS Communion is served by intinction. As you are able, come forward down the center aisle, forming two lines, and return using the side aisle. Take a piece of bread (or gluten-free wafer) and dip it into the cup to receive both elements. Prelude: Johann Gottfried Walther ( ) was a cousin, friend, and esteemed colleague of J.S. Bach. Organist and court musician in Weimar, Walther also wrote the very first musical encyclopedia, Musicalisches Lexicon, in In this cheerful setting of our opening hymn, each melodic phrase is introduced in the upper parts and then heard in long notes in the pedals. Postlude: This piece is based on hymn #744. Octave leaps at the beginning convey "Arise" in the text, and near the end a pedal point signifies "God's power will make us strong" (st. 4). 6
