Childcare provided for infants to three-year-olds.. We are a Reconciling Congregation, welcoming all persons into full participation in the life of the congregation regardless of age, sexual orientation, gender identity, family configuration, racial or ethnic background, economic status, or mental or physical abilities. As we journey to the reconciliation of all persons as children of God, we celebrate our human family s diversity.

2 Random Musings from Pastor Barbara I think most of you who consider yourselves to be part of Hillview have become familiar with the phrase--- Hillview a place where faith matters What I want to be sure you know is the deeper levels of meaning packed in this little phrase. Your church council and ministry teams have been using these words to help us define HOW we are church together. They see three parts to this: 1. We offer a place for deep experiences of worship and prayer. Sunday mornings we gather to sing, pray and share in God s spirit, and the hope is that this is a priority in the lives of all who participate in this community. I know this is true for many of you 2. We offer a place for ongoing learning and spiritual growth. There are So many opportunities (short- term and long- term) to explore and nurture your own faith. We believe this matters that this is an important way to build and strengthen your faith. The hope is you are finding your way to committing some time to these opportunities. More and more of you seem to be doing so 3. We offer a place to discover and live into acts of service for others. There are numerous ways to be in ministry within our walls the Community Meal is an important one. Many folks also serve on ministry teams that formally organize and offer opportunities for service whether it s helping on cleanup day, increasing your pledge, teaching a class, or calling on our sick and shut-in folks. We also try our best to keep you aware of opportunities to be of service BEYOND these walls. Many of you are already involved How are YOU doing? Are you working on your faith so that it matters in ALL these ways? Where is your growing edge as a follower of Jesus? Please let me know if we can help you live more fully into faith that matters

3 Faith In Action News JUNE 13, 2012 DON'T MISS THIS OPPORTUNITY! Jim Winkler, General Secretary of the Global Board of Church and Society in Idaho for the first time to share with us! The Micah Dilemma: How to love kindness AND do justice Sunday, June 24, 3-5p.m. After Jim's address, break-out groups will be looking specifically at payday loans, equal rights and the death penalty. Child care is available on request ( ). Friendship Feast On Sunday, July 8, it will be Hillview s turn to prepare the Friendship Feast, a Sunday evening meal that feeds many in the homeless community. The meal is held at First United Methodist, but a team of 6 to 8 people from Hillview does the cooking and serving the second Sunday of each month with 5 Sundays. The commitment is from about 3:00 6:30p.m. and it s a great opportunity for fellowship and getting acquainted with a few people while slicing, dicing, stirring and serving. If you can help, please sign up on the sheet on the sign-up table in the gathering area. For questions, call Kim Custer at Corpus Christi House Education Center Hillview has long supported Corpus Christi House, a day shelter that provides a safe place to be out of the weather, use the telephone, receive mail, do laundry, shower and take care of basic needs that we tend to take for granted. Two years ago CCH expanded its services by opening the STEP UP Education Center that provides GED testing prep services, including tutoring, testing fees and transportation to and from tests. It also offers college access services and weekly enrichment activities for schoolage children. All services are free and are run by volunteers. Page 3

4 School of Christian Mission That All May Have Life Imagine you hear a school bell ringing. Yes, it s calling you MEN, YOUTH, and WOMEN to the School of Christian Mission, July 26 29, at the Nazareth Center, Boise, Idaho. That All May Have Life is the general theme inspired by John 10:10 when Jesus proclaims, I came that they may have life and have it abundantly. (NRSV) With this thematic banner of fullness of life for a wounded world, participants at the School of Christian Mission can choose to attend two of three studies if you attend Thursday evening through Sunday noon; choose one study if you attend Thursday evening and Friday. or Saturday and Sunday: Haiti: Challenges and Hope This Geographic Study highlights the country s numerous cultures and the legacy of colonialism that have shaped Haiti s heritage and history. While the study includes the impact of the devastating January 12, 2010 earthquake and the ongoing relief and rebuilding efforts, it also addresses the need for a theology of liberation for Haiti. Rochelle Killett, Nampa, Idaho, is the study leader. Immigration in the Bible This Spiritual Growth Study shares the story of the Bible as a narrative of immigrants and migration. What does it mean to be a sojourner? To practice hospitality? To view the Bible as the ultimate immigration handbook? Study leader is Rev. Jane Shafer from Bend, Oregon. Poverty is the General Issue Study of a human rights issue that gravely impacts women and children. The study leader is our own Hillview member Gayle Woods, who will help participants recognize connections between Scripture, church tradition, compassion for the poor, social outreach, and justice. This study will be offered again in Not only is the School of Christian Mission the best educational opportunity of the UMC, it offers educational, inspirational, and professional rewards: The plenary sessions complement classroom learning and inspire.

9 Living with Loss and Change JUNE 13, 2012 Grief is a natural response to loss. It s the emotional suffering you feel when something or someone you love is taken away. You may associate grief with the death of a loved one and this type of loss does often cause the most intense grief. But any loss can cause grief, including: A relationship breakup Death of a pet Loss of health Loss of a cherished dream Losing a job A loved one s serious illness Loss of financial stability Loss of a friendship A miscarriage Loss of safety after a trauma The Congregational Care Team is sponsoring a three-week study, Living with Loss and Change, led by Maggie Edmondson, Minister of Congregational Care on Wednesdays at 7pm beginning July 11. Childcare will be available in the Nursery. We will cover the following topics: July 11 Good Grief: What is it and Who does it? July 18 Feelings and Lifelines July 25 The New Normal : Seeking Healing and Wholeness (This session will meet at 8pm) Service of Hope and Healing June 27, 8pm, Sanctuary This past Spring has been a season of loss for our community of faith with the passing of several of our friends and members here at Hillview. The days are getting warmer with summer approaching and the light of day stretches on longer this time of year. Many of us find these long summer days more difficult than others. Perhaps a loved one or friend has died recently, a beloved pet, maybe you are without a job, living with an extended illness or chronic pain, or feeling burdened with health and life concerns. We all experience loss at various points during our lives, and this service is a way to honor these loses and move towards healing and wholeness within our lives and community of faith. Circle of Healing Grief Support Group The Grief Support Group will meet for lunch to fellowship and support one another as we walk together on this journey towards healing and wholeness. We will meet at Red Robin on Milwaukee 12:15pm on June 19. This support group is open to anyone. Please contact Maggie Edmondson, Minister of Congregational Care, if you have any questions, would like more information, or to sign up for this gathering at
