THE CONNECTOR Page 2 Offerings ~ About two weeks ago there was another school shooting--another 17 youth and teachers murdered, and many wounded. Unlike previous shootings, the young people are now taking the lead and acting as the conscience of our nation. They are protesting and working toward gun control laws, often in the face of calls for them to be expelled from school. Some are asking if we value our guns more than we value their lives. How do we respond? Many reasons have been put forward about the causes of gun violence poor parenting, glorifying violence in games and movies, mental health challenges, women no longer staying at home, the proliferation of guns, law enforcement not acting on reports of possible future suspects, lack of background checks on gun owners, and schools not being security-focused. People have already decided for themselves what the cause is, and when it happens again, they dig in their heels and refuse to listen and dialogue with open minds. Most of us are firmly entrenched in our own opinions. The view that worries me the most is blaming violence on mental illness, and the call to have a ban on gun ownership by those with mental health issues. Who defines which mental health challenges may cause violence? Are there no mental health challenges in other nations where mass shootings are very rare? Are men more prone than women to have mental health issues? If there is a ban, will those who need mental health care not seek help for fear of being labeled? I also worry about the accusation of poor parenting and the need for mothers to remain at home. We have a history of blaming mothers for the ills of society. In the last century mothers were blamed for autism (from aloofness in their parenting) and schizophrenia. These ideas were later debunked, but the mother is often one of the first places where we lay blame. victims, and to pray for the perpetrator? I do not believe that Jesus would stand by without working toward justice. The call to us is not to take up arms and stand at the school doors. It is not to be afraid of speaking out, in case we ruffle feathers. It is not to dig in our heels as if we know all answers. For the last 22 years, there has been a ban on government research into what causes gun violence. Reversing this is something all of us could support. Instead of assuming that we already know the causes, we could advocate for research to be done. We can also step back and question our own opinions and listen to the people around us. We can extend grace and not react by assuming we know another person s stand. We can also stop stigmatizing people with our assumptions. Gun violence needs to end. Our children need to be safe. Let s work together to figure this out! Grace and Peace, Brenda Lunch Bunch Come join us on the second Thursday of the month for good conversation and food. This month we will meet on March 8 at The Golden Star Restaurant (1142 N Orchard St) at 11:30 a.m. Please sign up in the Gathering Area or call the church office at Should the church remain silent about these shootings? Is our role only to offer compassion to the

Page 3 VOLUME 4, MARCH 2018 Finance Together We Do More! Last month we shared that you are one of twelve plus million United Methodists bringing light and hope to a hurting world. Part of what we do is support 426 missionaries all over the world with salaries, health and pension benefits and staff support. As we travel to the Asia/Pacific Region, you will find the most populous area in the world with a landmass spanning 55 countries. In 52 of these countries Christianity is a minority religion. Our missionaries serve in these countries. Let s visit two of our missionaries in Ulaanbaatar, the capital of Mongolia. Sun Lae Kim works with a learning center for children. This daycare center for preschool children enables parents to improve their lives by being employed in the community. It provides a safe environment for education as well as providing nutritious meals. On the other end of the spectrum, Chin H Cho serves with Grace Hospice. They serve cancer patients that can t afford to go to hospitals or purchase medicines. Clients are able to stay at home during this last period of their life while also receiving spiritual support. Thank you for being in Mongolia! We are the church at work! Finance/Stewardship Thank you! We are off to a good start. Finding a book in the UMW reading program that talks about Andy Griffith s influence on the Gospel came as a surprise. However, the book I m referring to is Hollow Faith: How Andy Griffith, Facebook and the American Dream Diluted the Gospel by Stephen Ingram. This book takes a deep look into the mirrors of pop and church culture and asks the difficult question: Are the things we produce and consume defining us? Author Stephen Ingram explores the themes of moralism, deism, me-ism, consumerism and therapeutic religion of pop culture. Hollow Faith separates the values of the Gospel from the cultural norms that have domesticated them. This is now available in the library. GOOD READING!!! ~Karen McAlister

No Youth Group on April 1, Easter Sunday. NEW GROUP EXPERIENCE COMING IN APRIL-- "THE WAY OF FORGIVENESS" This 9-week study will be on Thursdays, either 2 p.m.-3:30 p.m. or 7 p.m.-8:30 p.m., April 12 through June 7. Forgiveness of ourselves, others, even God, is not an easy process. However, it is part of our call as faithful followers of Jesus in the imperfect world in which we live. We will discuss such topics as Living in God's Blessing, Releasing Shame and Guilt, Facing and Transforming Our Anger, Receiving God's Forgiveness, Forgiving Others, etc. We will engage in discussion, listening, and various spiritual practices to help us connect with God s love and healing. Each group becomes its own, so it is closed after the first session. For the best experience, each group must have a minimum of 4 and a maximum of 12 participants. To register, please see or call Janine Watkins, , by March 21 so that participant materials can be ordered.

Stations of the Cross in the Sanctuary Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Stations of the Cross explanation: In the sanctuary there will be 14 traditional pictures representing Jesus journey from Pilate to the Crucifixion and the burial. A devotional will be provided to use with the pictures. Pastor Brenda will be in the sanctuary all day to offer explanation, support, and prayer. Good Friday Labyrinth Prayer Walk in Ballantyne Hall Open 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Labyrinths have been used by many cultures in many countries for centuries. Earlier European Christians used them as a symbol of a pilgrimage to Jerusalem. In recent years Christians in the United States, as well as in other countries, have recognized their value and use them in their spiritual growth practices. To enter the labyrinth slowly in humility and intention and silence opens us to empty out whatever may hinder us in our relationship with God, others, ourselves, or the wider world. In the center we continue to pray silently and deeply with or without words, sitting, standing, perhaps dancing, for as long as we wish to stay. Here we receive God s forgiveness, healing, wisdom, insight, peace, inspiration, or an array of experiences we can't imagine or describe. Sometimes there is a sense of nothingness at the time. Sometimes tears come as part of release or awe. Each person s experience is uniquely their own. Prayerfully, we leave the labyrinth, following the path out into the world to use what we have gained, with God s continuing presence and guidance in our lives. Please feel free to come any time during the open hours and take as long as you need. Come alone or invite family or friends for a time of respite and renewal. Janine Watkins will be available for explanation, support, or prayer if needed. Wrapped Candy Is Needed for Easter Please bring individually wrapped candy of any kind that will fit into plastic Easter eggs to help us with the church s Easter egg hunt! The candy may be left in the bin in the Gathering Area, near the sign-up tables.

Hillview Security Tidbit Security measures at Hillview have slowly been implemented to protect our children and church members. Several measures implemented over the last 6 months include security and medical team policies, parking lot patrols on Sundays, security members at special events such as Trunk-or-Treat and Vacation Bible School, and the addition of church location signs showing exit routes in each of the church building rooms. Recent security measures that have been added primarily for the protection of children in the Nursery area and church members in the Gathering Area are that the Hansen Wing doors and the south Gathering Area door will be locked from 8:30 a.m. to 9:15 a.m. for the first UMCOR Sunday (United Methodist Committee on Relief), March 11 On the same day as Daylight Savings Time, we will be observing UMCOR Sunday with a special offering. This offering is collected annually in every United Methodist Church to pay all the administrative costs for UMCOR. Because of this, every single penny you donate to help people recover from disasters goes directly to help. No administrative costs are taken out of this special appeal. Please be generous! VOLUME 4, MARCH 2018 service. This allows church members who attend Sunday School classes between services to have access to the building from the south parking lot or Youth House. For the second service, both the Hansen Wing doors and the south Gathering area door will be locked from 10:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. A sign is placed on the Hansen Wing door directing individuals to the east entryway of the church. In addition, individuals on security patrol are watching the doors in order to open them for you. If you have any questions or concerns about security at Hillview, please talk with Gene Hochhalter, Chair of the Safety Ministries Committee. Vacation Bible School We have the dates June 25 to 29! We have the theme Rolling River Rampage Experience the Ride of a Lifetime with God! Now we need you! We will have a time to explore the possibilities and set our course for our weeklong river rafting trip on Monday, March 12, at 6 p.m. in the church library. We invite everyone who would like to help with decorating, mission, music, science, storytelling, crafts, kitchen, and recreation to join us with your ideas and sense of adventure. Church Bazaar Instead of my usual plea for Hillview s crafters to start working this year, I am letting you know that we will be taking a break from the Bazaar. After some discussion at COM, it was decided that we would take this year to consider new possibilities: Do we invite vendors in, do we invite other churches to participate, do we have a more social activity? If you have thoughts on this, please share them with Marilesta, COM Chair, Brenda or me. Claudia Flora

THE CONNECTOR Page 8 Faith in Action Donate to Kiva Did you know that Hillview has a donation group through Kiva? What is Kiva? you ask. Kiva is a nonprofit organization that provides small loans to individuals throughout the world. Borrowers apply to Kiva for a loan. After it is approved and underwritten, it is posted to Kiva for crowdfunding in $25 increments. As the borrower repays the loan, funds are available to you, the lender, for additional loans. Kiva loans have a historical repayment rate of about 97%, so the same money can be used repeatedly for new purposes. Kiva envisions a world where all people hold the power to create opportunity for themselves and others. You can select from a number of areas where you wish to lend, including women, education, agriculture, arts, eco-friendly, and water and sanitation. For further details and to make a loan, go to At the bottom of the home page, you can click on Teams and then type Hillview to search for our team listing. If you are considering ways to contribute to others, please check Kiva out. I would also be happy to answer questions, so just ask! Marcia Belcheir, Faith in Action Committee Member Kiva crowdfunds loans for individuals from more than 80 countries (including the U.S.) who don t have access to fair and affordable credit. Kiva has earned a 4 out of a 4-star rating from Charity Navigator. About two-thirds of operating costs are funded through voluntary donations made by lenders, with the remainder covered by grants and other donations; 100 percent of funds lent on Kiva go to funding loans. Here are some people that I am currently supporting: Eunice (Ghana) hopes to expand her wholesale clothing business. Norah (Zimbabwe) is a tailor who is using her loan to buy a heavy-duty sewing machine and more material. Varduhi (Armenia) is already involved in watermelon cultivation and wants to start a sheep herd with her loan. Sherry (United States) is expanding her business in raw juices after they were so helpful in getting her disabled son off much of his medication.

VOLUME 4, MARCH 2018 Page 9 Bishop s Symposium Featuring Brian McLaren on Wednesday, March 7 This year s Bishop s Symposium will focus on the need to develop our capacity for intercultural communication as we experience the possibilities of interfaith relationships. At the Bishop s Symposium in Boise we will glean from the wisdom of others to learn what can be gained, and dream a little about what we ourselves do. United Methodist clergy and lay persons from across the Greater Northwest Area are invited to Cathedral of the Rockies for an afternoon with nationally known author and activist Brian McLaren and an evening with No Joke Life! presenting three practices for crossing the difference divide on Wednesday, March 7, just prior to the Northwest Leadership Institute (NLI) on March 8-9. Registration for Wednesday alone is $30 with dinner included. Registration for both the Bishop s Symposium and NLI is $89 if you join Hillview s group. Otherwise, it is $99. For information about NLI, go to the Cathedral of the Rockies website and to join Hillview s group, contact Claudia in the church office ( ). Adult Sunday School Wednesdays@Hillview Jesus & Java: Discussion group. Come discuss the news of the day in a Christian context. Now meeting in Room 10. Journey Through the Bible: It is never too late to join in the journey. Meets in the church Library (Room 9) Dinner and Fellowship at 5:30 p.m. Classes at 6 p.m. Bible Study: The Gospel of John Pastor Brenda s study is always open to anyone who wants to attend. Building Use Do you know how building use is decided and scheduled? The Trustees review building use requests for outside groups and our other congregations. For regular church groups, Claudia maintains the church calendar and tries to accommodate all who wish to meet at Hillview. You can help by requesting meeting times and changes (time, date, room) well in advance whenever possible. Please keep in mind that we have an active Cub Scout Pack and Boy Scout Troop, three other congregations, UMW, Hillview Preschool, Central District Health Fit & Fallproof classes, the Art Group, Book Groups to name but a few groups that regularly use our space. Please remember to be welcoming and gracious even when someone else is in your meeting area. Let Claudia know of issues; they often result from a sudden change in plans and can easily be settled with grace and patience.

THE CONNECTOR Faith in Action Page 10 Milk and Cereal for Corpus Christi THANK YOU In July 2016 a call went out to the congregation to donate milk and cereal to those who use Corpus Christi House for assistance during the day. The church committed to donating 10 gallons of milk and 4 large bags of cereal every week to provide breakfast for these individuals. Since that time, many of you have brought milk and cereal to meet the need. Some commit to bringing it every week, others once a month, and some bring as they are able. As a congregation, we have contributed approximately 700 gallons of milk and approximately 250 bags of cereal. On most Mondays, when Hillview s milk man, Ken Miller, arrives, there is no milk available for breakfast and very little cereal. The kitchen manager has often commented how much the milk and cereal is appreciated by Corpus Christi. The individuals who utilize the services also have expressed their thanks to Ken and willingly help carry the supplies into the kitchen. We may think, What difference am I making with just one gallon of milk and a bag of cereal? Together WE are making a difference, each week, with each gallon of milk, each bag of cereal. Together, WE can make a difference for one person, then another person and so on. Keep up the good work. Thanks so much to each and every one of you! There s a sign-up sheet on the table in the Gathering Area. If you forget to sign up but still want to donate milk and/or cereal, your donation is happily received. Faith in Action Team Let s Recycle! Are there any electronic, digital, or other electronic devices in your or your family s future this holiday season or beyond? Looking for a safe place to dispose of your old mobile phones, TVs, computers, and other e-devices cluttering your closets, garages, or elsewhere in your home? Please DON T throw them into the trash! These discarded items, known as e-waste, can be toxic when dumped in our landfills. DO recycle your e-waste! Hillview s Faith in Action team is creating a new way for all of us to keep any toxic e-waste out of the landfill and recycle it instead. You ll find an e-waste recycling bin next to the Corpus Christi bin in the Gathering Area. Because of the kinds of electronics that often become surplus after Christmas, our first round of e-waste recycling will focus on such items as laptop computers, mobile phones, and other personal electronic devices. But we can also ensure larger items will be safely recycled and that any personal information on any devices will be wiped clean. Depending on demand, we ll take all of these devices but also other waste each quarter, as Hillview s e-waste recycling program grows. Your FIA team visited Recycle Boise (4725 N. Glenwood in Garden City; ; and was pleased to learn about the kinds of items that can be recycled. Examples include batteries, cable boxes, cell phones, circuit boards, computer boards and towers, hard drives, laptops, flat-monitor (LCD) screens, telephone equipment, and all things metal or electronic. Recycle Boise, which serves churches, home consumers, businesses, schools, hospitals, and others, is also an E-Stewards ( certified recycler. Join us in keeping bad stuff out of our landfill! Hillview already rocks in recycling our trash and other waste, so here s a chance to take it to another level while cleaning out your garage or basement. To recycle larger items such as TV sets, appliances, vehicles, and almost anything else that contains metals, or for information on how to safely dispose of toxic waste such as paints, other chemicals, or light bulbs, contact Ken Miller at or at kenmiller@cableone.net.
