2 NEWS FROM ST. PAUL S PRESCHOOL As the end of our school year approaches, children are busy with crafts and learning about caterpillars, butterflies, flowers and other critters. Many classes are planning a field trip to the strawberry patch; the children love picking strawberries! This field trip is also a favorite with the teachers too. The 4-and 5-year-olds will also have bike day where they learn to be safe riding their bicycles. Our 3-, 4-, and 5-year-old classes are excitedly preparing for the End of Year Celebration when they will entertain family and friends with fun songs. We would love for you to join us on May 21 at 11:30 a.m. to celebrate the many successes of our school year. We are extremely excited that our Summer Camp weeks are full. The teachers are looking forward to 2 weeks of fun in the sun as we transform the classes into different adventures for the children. I hope you all have a warm, fun-filled May. Mary Catherine Troxler ST. PAUL S COOKBOOK The Fellowship Committee will be developing a cookbook to commemorate St. Paul s 50 th Anniversary. We will want to hear from oldtimers, newcomers and those in between. Please begin thinking about food experiences you ve had at St. Paul s (or brought to St. Paul s from other church events), and the small stories that go with them that connect them to St. Paul s past, present and future. More information and requests for recipes will follow in the next few weeks, but if you have questions or would like help to with the cookbook, please call Susan Hawkins, , nanooh@nc.rr.com. Submitted by Susan Hawkins WARDEN S CORNER ST. PAUL'S AND THE LAST FIVE POUNDS For those of you who are women you can probably relate to trying to lose those last few pounds of unwanted weight, especially after having a baby. The effort to lose that last five seems exponentially difficult compared to the rest of the weight you have already lost. As you focus on the last five pounds, it is easy to lose the perspective on what you have already lost and you often forget how much you have achieved. I think this applies to so many aspects in our lives. I recently attended the Warden's Retreat held by the Diocese of North Carolina. Junior and Senior Wardens attended from both large and small congregations. After listening to the many issues that other congregations are facing, St. Paul's issues seemed very small. In fact, it felt like St. Paul's was participating in the "Biggest Loser" weight loss contest and we showed up wanting only to lose five pounds. At one point, I sat at a table-top discussion with some smaller parishes. As we went around the table, the first gentleman spoke about his surrounding community and church shrinking. The average parishioners' age was sixty and the church did not have any children. There were seven households that pledged at his church and there were not enough funds to continue to pay their priest. When he was through speaking the next woman spoke of her church's situation. Her church had to let their priest go due to a betrayal of trust. The church was trying to heal and at the same time find a new priest. When it came time for me to speak, I didn't know what to say. Clearly these churches were dealing with very serious issues, and by the grace of God, St. Paul's is not dealing with anything like this. As I drove home, I reflected on all of St. Paul's blessings. We have a community and church that are growing. Our sanctuary and education hall are full of children on Sundays. We have a wonderful staff and clergy. It is an honor to work closely with them. As we continue to grow and face issues, let us not forget how far we have come. Only fifty years ago, we were just a dream in the minds of St. Paul's parishioners. Let us rejoice with where we are. Let us continue to strive and live into God's calling for us without becoming overly focused on the last five pounds. In Christ, Mary Wood, Junior Warden 2

7 MAY MUSICALLY SPEAKING from Jason Pace Thoughts on Worship: Soren Kierkegaard ( ), a great theologian, was particularly outspoken on the subject of worship. He was critical of many churches whose worship had become "user friendly." To illustrate, he described Christian worship using two analogies from drama. In the first analogy, God is the prompter, the liturgical leaders (musicians, readers of the scriptures, preachers and celebrants) are the actors and the congregation is the audience. This situation occurs when people believe that specially trained leaders are better equipped to be the performers. This congregation believes it is best if they just watch as onlookers. Kierkegaard taught that this understanding of worship was totally wrong. In the second analogy, he proposes the liturgical leaders are the prompters. The congregation and liturgical leaders together are the actors in the drama of worship and God alone is the audience for the drama. These analogies give us something to think about: In my life am I just being an audience or prompter? Or, am I active and participating in worship each day with humility, service, praise, singing, giving and by telling others that God loves them? More important than making music and having fun, the music programs at St. Paul s serve to provide a way for people to be active in worship. (And we do have fun too!) So during this season of transition in the music ministry, consider if now is time for you to explore becoming a part of a music program at St. Paul s. Choir Camp for Youth (for rising 4 th through 9 th graders) August 22-24, 2008 Church Music Conference (for Adults) August 21-24, 2008 in Salter Path, NC at beautiful liturgy, stunning music, Community Music Events A variety of musical presentations are occurring in our community this month: 8:00 p.m. 5/2 Triangle Brass Band Fletcher Theater 3:00 p.m. 5/4 Triangle Youth Philharmonic - Meymandi 7:30 p.m. 5/8 Concert Singers of Cary - Regency Park 7:30 p.m. 5/10 Mozart s Coronation Mass - St. Stephen, Durham 4:00 p.m. 5/18 Thompson's A Testament of Freedom - Edenton Street Methodist A SPLASHING Success! The children s cantata presentation of Oh, Jonah! last month was amazing, enjoyable and worshipful. What a wonderful expression of God s love and grace for us as told through the experience of Jonah, the sailors, a whale and the Ninevites. In addition to the performance at St. Paul s, the children s choirs gave presentations to the residents at Cary Rehabilitation and Chatham Creek Home. I would like to offer thanks and appreciation to the children and to everyone who helped put this program together. I would also like to express a special thank you to the parents who support the music programs and make the effort to bring their children. The enrichment that the children receive through their participation in these programs will have a blessing and impact throughout their lives.
