1 Colonial Church is a progressive, inclusive Christian community that seeks to nurture people s minds as well as their spirits. October 23, 2014 Volume 65, Issue 22 Sunday Worship: October 26, 2014 Worship at 8:30 & 10:15 a.m. Sunday School at 10:15 a.m. for children and youth Fall Sermon Series: bliss! The act of blessing someone is powerful. Blessing all the families of the Earth is the foundational mandate given by God to all the descendants of Abraham - Muslims, Jews, and Christians. But what does it mean to bless? How do we bless? Colonial Church is going to practice the holy act of blessing this Fall in our worship. Come and be blessed to be a blessing! October 26 A Animal Blessing (Guest Preacher Edith Guffey, our Conference Minister) November 2 R Relationships Supercharged November 9 Spirit Filled Balloons! Inside this issue: Movie Night... 2 Outdoor Cleanup... 2 Christmas Store... 2 Virtual Sign-ups... 2 All Saints Sunday... 2 Advent Festival Needs... 2 Rummage Sale Update... 3 Tai Chi Chih... 3 Poe Concert... 3 Colonial Women... 4 When we talk about Colonial soaring, our first thought is often our Outreach efforts. so the O in SOAR stands for Outreach. One way we work together is with our dollars. Colonial pledges 10% or more of our budget to outreach programs. In 2014, that s $37,000. Most of us could not sit down and write a check for that amount, but TOGETHER we can. Our Outreach total is dramatically boosted through special offerings and efforts undertaken by individuals or groups that never show up on the balance sheet. That s impressive, but it is estimated that the value of the time Colonial members donate to these and other efforts actually exceeds the dollars we invest in the community. Pledge Sunday is November 9. Let s continue to keep Colonial s Outreach efforts soaring by increasing our pledges this year. Blessing of the Animals on Sunday, October 26 Animals are a blessing, and they also have a power to bless. At our 8:30 and 10:15 a.m. services on Sunday, Oct. 26, we welcome a guest Wink, the One-Eyed Wonder as we bless the animals in our lives. You are welcome to bring your companion animal to this service to receive a blessing as worship. We will also provide blessings in abstentia for animals who cannot make the trip to church. Date Night Babysitting... 4 Election Day Rides... 4 New Member Class... 4 Colonial Staff... 4 Birthdays/Anniversaries... 5 Calendar... 5 Council Minutes: Minutes of the Church Council are posted on the bulletin board across from the church office. 3 Update By the Numbers $10, profit (not counting E-Bay Sales to come) 75 people (approximately) worked over a 10 day period of set up and sale 32 people donated food and 4 donated money Our sale is divided into many departments and we have the following department heads to thank: Women s Clothing Marilyn and Elizabeth Uppman Men s Clothing Catherine Bowser Finer Things Carla Mattson & Rosalie Henry Shoes: Dorothy Stumpe Books Mariam Fleming & Carol Kromnacker Children s & Toys Melissa & Linda Moses Housewares Lin Vaughn & Mary Penrose Stationary, Office & Crafts Muriel Seibert Linens Charlotte Drayer Holiday & Christmas Martha Wofford Art Jane Pronko Electronics Howard Lee Furniture Rich Kromnacker Outdoor Sales Bob LeVeau & Bill Yohn Publicity & Signs Jeni Cosgrove Craigslist Ad Rusty Mann Peekup Andropoff Bob Starcke Food Kendra Morrison, Glenna & Jim Loomis We are so indebted to everyone who helped with this year s rummage sale. Some were there every day, some came when they could for a few hours. Some took time off their jobs to work. Children and grandchildren came to help. And together, we succeeded in pulling it off without a hitch. We heard customers comment, on more than one occasion, that they look forward to this sale every year. We also know that we helped many of them with the low prices of the merchandise. The proceeds will support the many charitable efforts of Colonial Women. What s more, we all enjoyed each other s company and built our community. Thanks to all. Kathi Cook, Carla Mattson, and Martha Wofford, co-chairs Molly s Table Thanks! Many thanks to Jayne Quimby for getting the pizza for us and delivering it. To Cindy Lafferty, Sally Huggins, Kendra Morrison, and Susie Uppman for hanging out with the little ones. For Pastor Aaron who showed up to have pizza with the moms and then play with the kids downstairs. As if she didn t have enough to do these days, Martha Wofford was there. And Jan Neustrom brought food for the little ones and was the superintendent of packaging up the fragile gifts. Lynn Sample kept things on track. The folks from TCBY yogurt donated splendid yogurt desserts, and then enjoyed watching the women fill their bags downstairs at the rummage sale with goodies. Jim and Glenna Loomis and Kendra had the Heritage Room all ready for the folks to come eat dinner. Carla Mattson brought up jewelry for them. Bruce Wofford and Susie Uppman drove the vans, and Bill Yohn drove his van full of treasure back to Sheffield Place. Edgar Allan Poe in Music The Midwest Chamber Ensemble will collaborate with the William Jewell Concert Choir and conductor Anthony Maglione in a special Halloween concert on Sunday, October 26, at 7:30 p.m. at Gano Chapel at William Jewell College in Liberty, MO. The program includes the perennial organ favorite Toccata and Fugue in D minor attributed to J.S. Bach and choral works by Anthony Maglione and Joseph Kern, Colonial s organist. Sign Up to Usher The Board of Worship has put a signup sheet for ushers, greeters, and communion servers online. You can volunteer for one of those opportunities with just a click of the mouse. Colonial Women Book Club Friday, December 3, 7:00 p.m., Stacey Algren s home. The group will be discussing Still Alice by Lisa Genova, a New York Times bestselling novel, about an accomplished woman who slowly loses her thoughts and memories to Alzheimer s disease only to discover that each day brings a new way of living and loving. Everyone is invited to join us for a discussion of this haunting story. Alice Howland, happily married with three grown children and a house on the Cape, is a celebrated Harvard professor at the height of her career when she notices a forgetfulness creeping into her life. As confusion starts to cloud her thinking and her memory begins to fail her, she receives a devastating diagnosis: early onset Alzheimer s disease. Fiercely independent, Alice struggles to maintain her lifestyle and live in the moment, even as her sense of self is being stripped away. In turns heartbreaking, inspiring, and terrifying, Still Alice captures in remarkable detail what it s like to literally lose your mind. Election Day Ride Help Voting is a freedom and responsibility. For some people, getting to their polling place can be a challenge. If you need help with transportation on Election Day, November 4, please call the church office.
