1 Colonial Church is a progressive, inclusive Christian community that seeks to nurture people s minds as well as their spirits. October 1, 2015 Sunday Worship October 4, 2015 Worship at 8:30 & 10:15 a.m. Sunday School at 10:15 a.m. for children and youth Rev. Davita Day McCallister, keynote speaker for the annual meeting, preaching K-O Conference Delegates to Worship with Us This Sunday The 54th annual meeting of the UCC Kansas-Oklahoma Conference will be Oct. 2-4 at the Doubletree Hotel in Overland Park. The delegates will join in worship at Colonial at the 10:15 a.m. service next Sun., Oct. 4. Please come to welcome the delegates and to hear from Rev. Davita Day McCallister, Associate Conference Minister for Leadership Development and Congregational Vitality in the Connecticut Conference UCC. She is the keynote speaker for the annual meeting. Worship with Bethel AME Church on Sunday, October 18 On June 17, a young man filled with hate gunned down nine people gathered for Bible Study at Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church in Charleston, SC. His goal was simple - create a fracture to launch a new Civil War. In our time of prayer the Sunday after the shooting, God s Spirit spoke through a suggestion to write letters of love to our sisters and brothers at Bethel AME Church in Kansas City. A nd in response, Colonial Church has been invited to worship at Bethel AME Church (2329 Flora Ave, Kansas City, MO 64108). With the full support of the Colonial Church leadership and Pastor Aaron, we have accepted this invitation to worship together on Sunday, October 18, at 10:00 a.m. We will only have our 8:30 a.m. service at Colonial Church that Sunday. We are people of resurrection resiliency. Hate is being answered by a call to Christian unity over the realities of racism and separation that exist. We are inviting all people in our community to mark their calendars to take part in worship and a meal together afterwards. As we break bread together, we are also going to talk about ways that together we can make a witness against racism and for the unity of Christ s church. Candlelight & Conversation October 10 The next Candlelight & Conversation will be on Saturday, October 10, at 7:00 p.m. at the home of Deloras Pemberton, 7925 Granada, Prairie Village. The conversation at these sessions focuses on topics that encourage the participants to share their personal experiences and opinions with the group. One of those that will be used this time is: Tell us about a favorite toy or game that you remember from your childhood. Feel free to bring pictures or props if you have them. No need to RSVP, but if you do come please bring either a snack or a beverage. Important Rummage Sale Dates The Colonial Rummage Sale is rapidly approaching (Oct )so get your donations ready. 2 Dreams Work Panel Results The first Dream Team brainstorming session, held Sunday, September 20, included presentations on 3 projects: Hats and Scarves for Johnson County Christmas Store Martha Wofford and Marilyn Uppman leaders. Following up on a successful project of Plymouth Guild last year, the recommendation was to make it a church wide event in order to involve more people and to create more hats and scarves (last year s stock flew off the shelves the first 2 hours of the two-day event). Kits will be prepared and distributed to Colonial members/families to take home and make the hats and scarves. This is something children can do. The tentative schedule is Last Week of October Volunteers cut fabric and make kits November 1-8 Kits handed out November Hats and scarves collected The project team has the necessary resources. Shelter for Single Men and Women in Johnson County - Leonore Rowe leader. Leonore has taken up a personal mission to create awareness of homelessness in Johnson County and to ultimately fill a critical need. Those attending the Dream Team session offered several suggestions including having speakers on the topic at events sponsored by Colonial for members and area residents, talking with city leaders to build grass root support and factoids on the topic in the Crier. Marylee Battaglia suggested people working on the front line of homeless projects in Wyandotte County might be a good resource. Several related programs involving homelessness in Johnson County have been discussed. The Board of Outreach and Justice and Witness Committees will consider how to coordinate and promote these efforts. Neighborhood Children Outreach Marylee Battaglia leader. Marylee noted that Colonial s VBS drew children from the neighborhood. Colonial provides several other kid-friendly events like the Advent Festival. She suggested invitations to the Advent Festival (and similar events) be sent to children/families participating in VBS in recent years. Shea will coordinate the invitations. Men s Breakfast Group The next breakfast is Tuesday, October 6, at 8:00 a.m. at Perkins (11200 W 87th St, Lenexa, KS 66215). Everyone is welcome. Book Discussion Group Friday, October 23, 7:00 p.m., Stephanie Graff s home, 4141 W. 111th Terrace, Leawood, KS. The group will discuss Girl at War by Sara Novic. The story is told from the perspective of a ten-year-old girl who is conscripted into the Yugoslav civil war in the early 1990s by the bad luck of simply being in the wrong place at the wrong time. The author performs the miracle of making the stories of broken lives in a distant country feel as large and universal as myth. It is a brutal novel, but a beautiful one. With piercing clarity and devastating wit, Novic traces the enduring fallout of a childhood interrupted by conflict. Girl at War is an unforgettable, deeply touching meditation on identity and memory, loss and survival and what it means to feel at home in the world. Save the date The Colonial Women book club will discuss Blessings by Anna Quindlen on December 4. More details later. Did You Know... that Marilyn Uppman has retired after 40 years of delighting our children during Children s Conversations? Thank you, Marilyn. You are a treasure and we all feel blessed to have watched you teach our children. Oh yes and feed our children with those delicious Marilyn chocolate chip cookies.
