2 Welcome to Divine Grace Lutheran Church We welcome you in the name of our Savior! We are anxious to share with you the blessings of the Gospel, and pray that you will leave us this morning spiritually nourished for the week to come and return again to worship with us next Sunday. If you are a visitor, we kindly ask that you sign the Guest Register in the church entryway. Theme: All too often, doubt is the unfortunate companion of faith. With Jesus, there s never a reason to doubt. As we focus on him through life s troubles, faith will conquer doubt. Liturgy: Thursday -- Service of Light, p. 54 Sunday -- Morning Praise, p. 45 Psalm 73, page 94 in the hymnal Sure-ly it is God who saves me; I will trust in him and not be a-fraid. For the Lord is my strong-hold and my sure de-fense, and he will be my Sav-ior. I am always with 'you, O Lord;* you hold me by my 'right hand. You guide me with your 'counsel,* and afterward you will take me into 'glory. Whom have I in heav'en but you?* And earth has nothing I desire be'sides you. My flesh and my 'heart may fail,* but God is the strength of my heart and my portion for'ever. Glory be to the Father and 'to the Son* and to the Holy 'Spirit, as it was in the be'ginning,* is now, and will be forever. 'Amen. 3 Scripture Lesson: James 1:2-8,12 James calls us out as living like double-minded people when we doubt our God. When we hear the gospel, our trust in God s promises is bolstered and faith finds its place once again, making us more sure of what we hope for and more certain of what we do not yet see. 2Consider it complete joy, my brothers, whenever you fall into various kinds of trials, 3because you know that the testing of your faith produces patient endurance. 4 And let patient endurance finish its work, so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything. 5 If any one of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives it to all without reservation and without finding fault, and it will be given to him. 6 But let him ask in faith, without doubting, because the one who doubts is like a wave of the sea, blown and tossed by the wind. 7 In fact, that person should not expect that he will receive anything from the Lord. 8 He is a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways. 12 Blessed is the man who endures a trial patiently, because when he has stood the test, he will receive the crown of life, which God promised to those who love him. Sermon Text: Matthew 14: Immediately Jesus urged the disciples to get into the boat and to go ahead of him to the other side, while he dismissed the crowd. 23 After he had dismissed the crowd, he went up onto the mountain by himself to pray. When evening came, he was there alone. 24 By then the boat was quite a distance from shore, being pounded by the waves because the wind was against it. 25 In the fourth watch of the night, Jesus came toward them, walking on the sea. 26When the disciples saw him walking on the sea, they were terrified and cried out in fear, It s a ghost! 27 But Jesus spoke to them at once, saying, Take heart! It is I! Do not be afraid. 28Peter answered him and said, Lord, if it is you, command me to come to you on the water. 29 Jesus said, Come! Peter stepped down from the boat, walked on the water, and went toward Jesus. 30 But when he saw the strong wind, he was afraid. As he began to sink, he cried out, Lord, save me! 31 Immediately Jesus stretched out his hand, took hold of him, and said to him, You of little faith, why did you doubt? 32 When they got into the boat, the wind stopped. 33 Those who were in the boat worshipped him, saying, Truly you are the Son of God! 5 Parish News Altar Flowers: The flowers that beautify our service today were given to God s glory by Art and Judi Reinhold in honor of their grandson Patrick s birthday. Last Thursday Worship Service: August 31 st is our last summer Thursday evening worship service. Thursday worship services will resume next summer. Church Picnic: All are invited to the Divine Grace Church Picnic, Sunday September 10 th. This picnic is in conjunction with our annual Rally Around the Word Sunday. Join us right here at church- food will be served at 12:00. Bring a dish to pass, lawn chairs, lawn games and Frisbees. Please sign up on the Fellowship Hall bulletin board if you plan to attend. Free Concert: How in the world does a committed atheist become a WELS Lutheran? Come and enjoy an evening with Christian songwriter and former unbeliever Chris Driesbach on Wednesday, September 27 th, at 7:00 pm. Chris tells all about God s grace with original songs, stories and pictures in a one-hour concert right here at Divine Grace. Please plan to attend! Parents of 7 th and 8 th Grade Students: Confirmation Class for 7 th and 8 th graders (who do not attend Divine Grace School) will begin on Monday, September 11 th, from 5:30 to 6:40 pm. If you have a child entering 7 th or 8 th grade and have not received an informational letter/ , please speak to Pastor. Thank you! It s Archery Camp Time again! It s Archery Camp Time again! Archery camp is coming up quick Fri, Sept. 22 nd thru Sun, Sep 24 th at Camp Killarney in Irish Hills, MI. For those of you who aren t familiar with it it s for boys in grades K-8 and their parent. We camp in tents in a group camping site with St. Paul s, Livonia and St. Peter s, Plymouth. Cost is $25 per person and includes camping fees, all meals, equipment and lots of archery and fun. No experience needed qualified instructors teach the kids (and dads) the proper way to shoot at both paper targets and 3D targets in the woods. Please sign up on the sheet in the school entry and pick up a registration form. We would love to have adult volunteers. Those of you who have gone in prior years know it s not that much work and the kids will love you for it! The class will meet each Wednesday during the school year from 9:30-10:30 am. Come and be nurtured in the Word of God! Meditations: New Meditations devotion booklets are available. 6 Sunday, September 10, 2017 Come before or after Bible Class and visit the displays prepared by church and school organizations. This is your chance to get involved! Then join us at church for a picnic. See you there! Rally Sunday: Sunday, September 10 th is our annual Rally Around the Word Sunday. Members, please plan to check out the displays before and after Bible Class. This will also mark the first day of Children s Sunday School, starting at 9:30 am. The church picnic will be held at Divine Grace, starting at 12:00 pm. Children s Sunday School begins on September 10 th. Students 3 years old through 8 th grade are welcome and encouraged to attend. Classes meet in various classrooms throughout the building. There will be signs posted by the classroom doors to direct you. This is a wonderful opportunity to grow in God s amazing Word!
