The world offers so much of this from so many resources: books, school, science, news organizations, the internet, parents, grandparents It s an endless list. But how much of the wisdom available in the world is truly wisdom? True wisdom comes from God. True wisdom comes from one source: God s Word. True wisdom seems like foolishness: A crucified Christ? A risen Savior? Salvation as a free gift? Come on! Yes, bring it on. Compared to the seemingly foolish wisdom of God, the wisdom of the world is utter nonsense. Come, listen to the wisdom of the God of all creation who knows and cares for you intimately. Take and eat, take and drink the true body and blood of your Savior. Confession of Sins, Prayer and Praise M: Beloved in the Lord: let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins to God our Father, asking him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness. C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Savior Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me, a sinner. 6 PRAYER OF THE DAY M: The Lord be with you. Let us pray. Almighty and merciful God, it is only by your gift of grace that we come into your presence and offer true and faithful service. Grant that our worship on earth may always be pleasing to you, and in the life to come give us the fulfillment of what you have promised; through Jesus Christ, your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 8 SECOND LESSON Ephesians 5:15-20 (EHV) 15 Consider carefully, then, how you walk, not as unwise people, but as wise people. 16 Make the most of your time, because the days are evil. 17 For this reason, do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is. 18 And do not get drunk on wine, which causes you to lose control. Instead, be filled with the Spirit 19 by speaking to one another with psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs (singing and making music with your hearts to the Lord), 20 by always giving thanks for everything to God the Father, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. VERSE OF THE DAY Alleluia. The Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart. Alleluia. (Hebrews 4:12 cf. RSV) Please stand for the gospel. GOSPEL M: The Gospel, according to St. John, chapter 6. John 6:51-58 (EHV) 51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats this bread, he will live forever. The bread that I will give for the life of the world is my flesh. 52 At that, the Jews argued among themselves, How can this man give us his flesh to eat? 53 So Jesus said to them, Amen, Amen, I tell you: Unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life in yourselves. 54 The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up on the Last Day. 55 For my flesh is real food, and my blood is real drink. 56 The one who eats my flesh and drinks my blood remains in me, and I in him. 57 Just as the living Father sent me and I live because of the Father, so the one who feeds on me will live because of me. 58 This is the bread that came down from heaven, not like your fathers ate and died. 9 NICENE CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation, he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary, and became fully human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate. He suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who in unity with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come. Amen. PRAYER OF THE CHURCH THE LORD S PRAYER C: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. 12 We believe that God comes to us with forgiveness in very tangible means as we participate in Holy Communion. Because the Bible has convinced us that Jesus body and blood are present in the Lord s Supper, and that receiving this sacrament together is a public statement of complete oneness in our beliefs and commitment, we invite to the Lord s Supper members of Trinity and guests from sister congregations of the WELS (Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod) and the ELS (Evangelical Lutheran Synod). If you are a member of another Lutheran denomination or another Christian church and would like to commune with us in the future, please speak with our pastor after the service and he would be delighted to explain what that entails. We don t want to be presumptuous and put you in the position of stating your agreement with our convictions before we have had an opportunity to explain them. Opening Service: Trinity Lutheran School will begin the school year on Monday, August 27 with an opening chapel service at 8:30 am. We encourage everyone to take part in the special service in support of our students, teachers, and school as a whole. Remember, this is YOUR school. 18

19 Saturday Night Services: Our final Saturday night service of the summer will be on September 1. Following Labor Day weekend we will continue with our regular worship schedule of Sundays at 9:00 am and Mondays at 6:30 pm. Confirmation Parent Meeting: Next Sunday, August 26, there will be an information meeting for parents who have a student in Confirmation class. This meeting will be right after worship. This includes students in grades 6-8 that attend Trinity School and grade 7-8 for those who attend public school. This meeting is required to be attended by all parents. If you cannot attend the meeting, please contact Pastor Luchterhand so arrangements can be made to meet at another time. Preschool Volunteers: Mrs. Wieting is looking for adults to assist in the preschool classroom for our 3 and 4 year olds. Help is needed Monday-Friday from 8:15-11:30 am (PK4) and Tuesday and Thursdays from 12:45-3:00 pm (PK3). We are flexible and can do one day a week or one day a month. Substitutes are always welcome. If you would be interested in bring an extra set of hands and eyes in the classroom, please contact Mrs. Wieting at Window Washing Help Needed! We are in need of volunteers to help wash the windows of the school. Inside, outside, and screens (where applicable) need to be done. If you are willing to help clean, please see the sheet on the table in the fellowship hall. You may select as many rooms as you are willing and once done, you can cross that item off the list. Unfortunately, the beginning of our school year is only a week away so cleaning needs to be done next week. 20 AUGUST IS MISSION MONTH AT TRINITY Missions: Display tables featuring WELS Mission work are on display in the fellowship hall. Please browse and see where our mission dollars and missionaries are taking the Gospel. There will be an opportunity to write notes to missionaries as part of the WELS "Befriend a Mission" program. These displays will remain up through the month of August. Nepal Project: WELS future pastors-in-training from Nepal are in need of clothing donations. Temperatures in Nepal can soar to over 120 degrees. There are daily power outages so the use of fans is limited. Even so, the student pastors would like to dress with respect as they attend their classes. Some of them only have one summer dress shirt which they wear to their classes every day. These men are in need of clean, like-new or new dress shirts. Desired requirements are: Plain and light colored Made of light weight cotton or a breathable fabric Short sleeved Small, medium or large sizes In addition, the men could use plain or solid colored ties If you or someone you know can help provide shirts or ties, please bring them to church before Friday, August 31. 22 Distractions, distractions Grace Fills Hearts with the Spirit Sermon Notes on Ephesians 5:15-20 S.D.D. = Not a problem; this is a problem What S.D.D. really is: Consider carefully how you walk a) Understand the Lord s (aka Ten Commandments) b) Stop making excuses Be filled with the Spirit a) The cure for S.D.D. = b) What does it mean to be filled with the Spirit? - Basic meaning: Believe in Jesus and live according to his will - Often, it can refer to above average Christian living c) Can ordinary people (i.e., you and me) live Spirit-filled lives? - Share the by speaking to one another (v. 19) - Focus your heart on the ; singing and making music in your hearts (v. 19) - Attitude of (v. 20) Is there a need for Spirit-filled living? the days are evil Then vs. Now? 23 Next Steps with Ephesians 5: ) Read Ephesians 5:15-20 every day. For additional practical encouragement in living a life that follows God s design, read Ephesians 4:17-5:14. 2) Identify unwise and foolish things that the world does in opposition to God s Word and will. 3) Identify areas in life where you struggle with unwise and foolish things. 4) When and where do you speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs as well as sing and make music in your hearts to the Lord? (NIV84) How might you do more of this? 5) Giving thanks is essential for a Spirit-filled life. Every day, write down in a notebook at least three things for which you are grateful. Review your growing list each day. 6) Read Colossians 3: These verses are quite similar to vv. 19,20. What encouragements are the same? What does the Colossians reading add to our Ephesians reading? 7) Expand your opportunities to be filled with the Spirit.
