DIVINE GRACE EV. LUTHERAN CHURCH SCHOOL PRESCHOOL Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod 3000 S. Lapeer Road Orion, MI (248) Pentecost 11 Series A August 17 & 20, 2017
Welcome to Divine Grace Lutheran Church We welcome you in the name of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. We are happy that you have joined us as we thank and praise our gracious God for all his kindness, especially sending his Son Jesus whose death on the cross has forgiven the sins of the world. If you are looking for a church home, please call our pastor. He will be happy to answer any questions you may have. If you are a visitor, we kindly ask that you sign the Guest Register in the church entryway. If you are just passing through we hope that you will join us the next time you are in our area. Theme: Our gracious God provides. He graciously supplies forgiveness for the soul and food for the body. Personal Preparation for the Lord s Supper Hymnal, page 156 Lord Jesus, with joy and gratitude I come to your table to receive the precious food of your life-giving body and blood. May it strengthen me to remain in you as you remain in me, so that I bear much fruit in devoted service to you and in acts of kindness to others. Amen. Opening Hymn All Hail the Power of Jesus Name CW 370 Liturgy: Service of Word & Sacrament, p. 26 Old Testament Lesson & Sermon Text: Genesis 41:41-49 God s people trust that God will provide even when the plan makes no sense to us. Joseph is a prime example. Sold into slavery by his own brothers, the Lord used Joseph to save many lives during a severe famine. 41Pharaoh also said to Joseph, Look, I have appointed you over the whole land of Egypt. 42 Pharaoh took his signet ring off of his hand and put it on Joseph s hand. He dressed Joseph in robes made from the best linen and put a gold chain around his neck. 43 He had him ride in the second best chariot that he had. Men went ahead of him crying out, Kneel down! Pharaoh appointed him over the whole land of Egypt. 44Pharaoh said to Joseph, I am Pharaoh, but in the whole land of Egypt no one will lift up his hand or his foot without your permission. 45 Pharaoh gave Joseph the name Zaphenath Paneah, and he gave him Asenath, the daughter of Potiphera priest of On, as a wife. Joseph went out and began to rule over the land of Egypt. 46Joseph was thirty years old when he stood before Pharaoh king of Egypt. Joseph went out - 1 -
from the presence of Pharaoh and traveled throughout the whole land of Egypt. 47 During the seven years of abundance the earth produced plentiful harvests. 48 He collected all the food during the seven good years in the land of Egypt, and he stored up the food in the cities. In every city he stored the food from the fields that were around the city. 49 Joseph stored up a huge amount of grain, like the sand of the sea. Finally he stopped keeping track, because it was too much to measure. Psalm 42-43, page 82 in the hymnal Bless-ed are they who hope, who hope in the Lord. As the deer pants for streams of 'water,* so my soul pants for 'you, O God. My soul thirsts for God, for the 'living God.* Where can I go and 'meet with God? Why are you downcast, 'O my soul?* Why so disturbed with'in me? Put your 'hope in God,* for I will yet praise him, my Savior 'and my God. Bless-ed are they who hope, who hope in the Lord. Send forth your light and your truth, let them 'guide me;* let them bring me to the place 'where you dwell. Then will I go to the altar of God, my joy and 'my delight.* I will praise you with the harp, O 'God, my God. Glory be to the Father and 'to the Son* and to the Holy 'Spirit, as it was in the be'ginning,* is now, and will be forever. 'Amen. Bless-ed are they who hope, who hope in the Lord. Epistle Lesson: 1 Timothy 4:4-5 God cares for us. He knows all of our needs and provides for us without fail. The Christian s life is one of gratefully receiving all that we need as gracious gifts from God. 4In fact, everything created by God is good, and nothing is to be rejected if it is received with thanksgiving, 5 because it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer
Verse of the Day: Alleluia. Jesus replied, If anyone loves me, he will obey my teaching. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him. Alleluia. Gospel Lesson: Matthew 14:13-21 Our Lord seems almost oblivious to the looming problem of feeding a large crowd in such a remote place. He instructs his disciples to give the people food. After the disciples assess their meager resources, the Lord of creation gives thanks and produces more than enough to satisfy the crowd. 13When Jesus heard this, he withdrew from there in a boat to a deserted place to be alone. When the crowds heard this, they followed him on foot from the towns. 14 When Jesus got out of the boat, he saw a large crowd. He had compassion on them and healed their sick. 15When evening came, his disciples came to him and said, This is a deserted place and the hour is already late. Send the crowds away, so that they can go into the villages and buy food for themselves. 16 But Jesus said to them, They do not need to go away. You give them something to eat. 17 They told him, We have here only five loaves and two fish. 18 Bring them here to me, he replied. 19 Then he instructed the people to sit down on the grass. He took the five loaves and the two fish. After looking up to heaven, he blessed them. He broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples. The disciples gave the food to the people. 20 They all ate and were filled. They picked up twelve basketfuls of what was left over from the broken pieces. 21 Those who ate were about five thousand men, not even counting women and children. Hymn of the Day God Moves in a Mysterious Way CW 420 Sermon (Genesis 41:41-49): Against All Odds, God Provides Too Much To Measure! Offering Our congregation s members willingly give offerings to support the Lord s work here and around the world out of their love for Christ. If you are a guest or visitor today, please do not feel obligated to give an offering
Close Communion We welcome all to our worship service. The Bible teaches that communion together signifies a oneness in faith, life, and worship (1 Cor 10:16-17). Reception of the Lord s Supper by Christians not fully united with us would imply a oneness which does not yet exist, but for which we pray. Therefore, out of love for God s Word, we invite those who are members of our congregation (or a sister WELS/ELS congregation) to come forward for communion. If you are a visitor, our pastor would be happy to speak with you, on the basis of God s Word, so that you might commune with us in the future. Thank you, Lord Jesus Christ, for nourishing me in this sacrament with your body and blood. You have given me forgiveness, life, and salvation. Let me always remain in you as a branch remains in the vine. Send me out in the power of your Spirit to live and work to your praise and glory. Amen.
