2 Welcome to Divine Grace Lutheran Church Welcome to Divine Grace Lutheran Church. We are happy that you have joined us as we thank and praise our gracious God for all his kindness, especially sending his Son Jesus whose death on the cross has forgiven the sins of the world. If you are looking for a church home, please call our pastor. He will be happy to answer any questions you may have. If you are a visitor, we kindly ask that you sign the Guest Register in the church entryway. If you are just passing through we hope that you will join us the next time you are in our area. The back few rows are reserved for parents with small children. Nursery (Mother s Room): If you have a young child or nursing infant and are in need of a nursery, you will find it to the left as soon as you enter the sanctuary. The service is shown on the television in the nursery. Changing Tables are located in the Women s Restroom in the Fellowship Hall, and in both the Men s and Women s Restrooms adjacent to the school hallway. 3 Theme: It s easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich person to enter the kingdom of God? Today Jesus teaches us not to overestimate ourselves, and not to underestimate our God. Personal Preparation for the Lord s Supper Hymnal, page 156 Opening Hymn: 779 I Sing as I Arise Today Liturgy: Service of Word & Sacrament, p. 26 Old Testament Lesson: Amos 5:6,7, God warns the people of Israel about their materialism and their lack of concern for the poor. Unless they turn from their sins and embrace him in humble faith, they will be consumed with a fire that cannot be put out. 6 Seek the LORD and live, or he will sweep through the house of Joseph like a fire; it will devour, and Bethel will have no one to quench it. 7 You who turn justice into bitterness and cast righteousness to the ground you hate the one who reproves in court and despise him who tells the truth. 11 You trample on the poor and force him to give you grain. Therefore, though you have built stone mansions, you will not live in them; though you have planted lush vineyards, you will not drink their wine. 12 For I know how many are your offenses and how great your sins. You oppress the righteous and take bribes and you deprive the poor of justice in the courts. 13 Therefore the prudent man keeps quiet in such times, for the times are evil. 14 Seek good, not evil, that you may live. Then the LORD God Almighty will be with you, just as you say he is. 15 Hate evil, love good; maintain justice in the courts. Perhaps the LORD God Almighty will have mercy on the remnant of Joseph. Psalm 90, page 99 in the hymnal Refrain: In ev-'ry age, O Lord, you have been our ref-uge. Lord, you have been our 'dwelling place* throughout all gener'ations. Before the mountains were born or you brought forth the earth 'and the world,* from everlasting to everlasting 'you are God. For a thousand years in your sight are like a day that has 'just gone by,* or like a watch 'in the night. Refrain: In ev-'ry age, O Lord, you have been our ref-uge

4 You have set our iniquities be'fore you,* our secret sins in the light of your 'presence. You turn mortals 'back to dust.* You sweep them away in the 'sleep of death. The length of our days is seventy years-or eighty, if we 'have the strength;* yet their span is but trouble and 'sorrow. Teach us to number our 'days aright,* that we may gain a heart of 'wisdom. Refrain: In ev-'ry age, O Lord, you have been our ref-uge. Satisfy us in the morning with your un'failing love,* that we may sing for joy and be glad 'all our days. Glory be to the Father and 'to the Son* and to the Holy 'Spirit, as it was in the be'ginning,* is now, and will be forever. 'Amen. Refrain: In ev-'ry age, O Lord, you have been our ref-uge. Epistle Lesson: Hebrews 3:1-6 Jesus was faithful in carrying out his Father s mission, just as Moses faithfully carried out his God-given responsibilities. But Jesus is worthy of greater honor than Moses because Moses was a servant in God s house, while Jesus is the head of that house, the Church. 1 Therefore, holy brothers, who share in the heavenly calling, fix your thoughts on Jesus, the apostle and high priest whom we confess. 2 He was faithful to the one who appointed him, just as Moses was faithful in all God's house. 3 Jesus has been found worthy of greater honor than Moses, just as the builder of a house has greater honor than the house itself. 4 For every house is built by someone, but God is the builder of everything. 5 Moses was faithful as a servant in all God's house, testifying to what would be said in the future. 6 But Christ is faithful as a son over God's house. And we are his house, if we hold on to our courage and the hope of which we boast. Verse of the Day: Alleluia. This is the Lord, we trusted in him; let us rejoice and be glad in his salvation. Alleluia. Gospel Lesson & Sermon Text: Mark 10:17-27 A rich young man wanted to know what he had to do to be saved. Jesus answers that he needs to set his money aside and put the Lord first

5 17 As Jesus started on his way, a man ran up to him and fell on his knees before him. Good teacher, he asked, what must I do to inherit eternal life? 18 Why do you call me good? Jesus answered. No one is good--except God alone. 19 You know the commandments: Do not murder, do not commit adultery, do not steal, do not give false testimony, do not defraud, honor your father and mother. 20 Teacher, he declared, all these I have kept since I was a boy. 21 Jesus looked at him and loved him. One thing you lack, he said. Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me. 22 At this the man's face fell. He went away sad, because he had great wealth. 23 Jesus looked around and said to his disciples, How hard it is for the rich to enter the kingdom of God! 24 The disciples were amazed at his words. But Jesus said again, Children, how hard it is to enter the kingdom of God! 25 It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle than for a rich man to enter the kingdom of God. 26 The disciples were even more amazed, and said to each other, Who then can be saved? 27 Jesus looked at them and said, With man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God. Hymn of Day: 401 Your Works, Not Mine, O Christ Sermon (Mark 10:17-27): Overestimating Ourselves, Underestimating God Offering Our congregation s members willingly give offerings to support the Lord s work here and around the world out of their love for Christ. Visitors are not required or expected to give an offering, though they may if they wish to do so. Close Communion We welcome all to our worship service. The Bible teaches that communion together signifies a oneness in faith, life, and worship (1 Cor 10:16-17). Reception of the Lord s Supper by Christians not fully united with us would imply a oneness which does not yet exist, but for which we pray. Therefore, out of love for God s Word, we invite those who are members of our congregation (or a sister WELS/ELS congregation) to come forward for communion. If you are a visitor, our pastor would be happy to speak with you, on the basis of God s Word, so that you might commune with us in the future. Hymn: 312 Lord Jesus Christ, You Have Prepared Closing Hymn: 289 Preserve Your Word, O Savior

10 MISSION STATEMENT Divine Grace Ev. Lutheran Church is a gathering of believers in Jesus Christ in the Lake Orion, Michigan area. As followers of our Lord and Savior, we are devoted to fulfilling the Great Commission he has given us in Matthew 28: Compelled by the love of Christ, we strive to make disciples for Jesus through faithful use of the means of grace--god s Word of Law and Gospel, Baptism and the Lord s Supper. In order to carry out this ministry, we follow Christ s commands: To join in regular worship and to conduct active lives of prayer (Psalm 95:1,2,6,7; Colossians 4:2) To study God s Word diligently and to hold to it faithfully (2 Peter 3:18; John 8:31,32) To encourage fellow believers to grow in their Christian faith and life (Hebrews 10:23-25) To restore erring members to a life of discipleship through loving, Christ-centered discipline (Matthew 18:15-18; Galatians 6:1) To express our Christian love by serving the needs of our fellowmen (John 13:34,35; Galatians 6:2,9,10) To reach out to the spiritually lost in our community and in the world with the Gospel (Acts 1:8; 2 Corinthians 5:18-20) To serve God and others for the building up of his Church with the spiritual gifts and abilities he has given us (1 Corinthians 15:58; Ephesians 4:11-13; 1 Peter 4:10,11) To use our God-given time, possessions and money for the glory of God and good of others (Matthew 25:14-30; Proverbs 3:9) - 9 -
