2 WELCOME TO WORSHIP AT UNIVERSITY LUTHERAN CHURCH during this season of Epiphany when we celebrate the presence of Christ in our lives and renew our baptismal commitment to follow in the way of Jesus. As one expression of our desire to experience the unity that we have in Christ, we worship today utilizing the liturgy, One World Rising, that includes songs from the faith community around the world. WE WELCOME EVERYONE TO THE LORD S TABLE to receive God s gift of forgiveness and the powerful freedom of a new life in Christ. Please come down the center aisle, proceed to the communion rail, and kneel or stand at the first open space. Hold out your hand to receive the bread. Gluten-free wafers are available. Please indicate your desire at the time you are offered the bread. You may drink either from an individual glass, which will be served first, or from the chalice. The individual glasses in the center of the tray contain grape juice (golden color). The outside glasses contain red wine. An acolyte will pass by to pick up your individual glass. In the spirit of continuous communion, please return to your seat via the side aisles after you have drunk from the glass or chalice. After everyone has been served at the communion rail, the ministers will serve anyone in the pew that is unable to come forward. Please indicate your desire in this regard to the pastor. Parents who desire that their children not receive communion may bring them forward for a blessing. PLEASE INDICATE YOUR ATTENDANCE at worship today and your participation at the Lord s Supper by completing the enclosed Worship Registration form and placing it in the offering plate. (Please be seated) First Lesson Jeremiah 17:5-10 These verses compose a poem that is part of a larger collection of wisdom sayings (17:5-11) that contrast two ways of life. Life with God brings blessing; the power and vitality of God is active in our life. Life without God brings a curse, the power of death. Thus says our God: Cursed are those who trust in mere mortals and make mere flesh their strength, whose hearts turn away from God. They shall be like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see when relief comes. They shall live in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. Blessed are those who trust in God, whose trust is God. They shall be like a tree planted by water, 5

6 sending out its roots by the stream. It shall not fear when heat comes, and its leaves shall stay green; in the year of drought it is not anxious, and it does not cease to bear fruit. 7 Second Lesson 1 Corinthians 15:12-20 For Paul, the resurrection of Christ is the basis for Christian hope. Because Christ has been raised, those who are in Christ know that they too will be raised to a new life beyond death. Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say there is no resurrection of the dead? If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised; and if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain. We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified of God who raised Christ whom Christ did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised. If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. Then those also who have died in Christ have perished. If for this life only we have hoped in Christ, we are of all people most to be pitied. He begins his great sermon with surprising statements about who is truly blessed in the eyes of God. Jesus came down with the twelve and stood on a level place, with a great crowd of his disciples and a great multitude of people from all Judea, Jerusalem, and the coast of Tyre and Sidon. They had come to hear him and to be healed of their diseases; and those who were troubled with unclean spirits were cured. And all in the crowd were trying to touch him, for power came out from him and healed all of them. Then he looked up at his disciples and said: Blessed are you who are poor, for yours is the kingdom of God. Blessed are you who are hungry now, for you will be filled. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Humanity. Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. We believe in God, who through Abraham and Sarah, promised to bless all peoples; who through Israel and Judah enacted the covenant of blessing and freedom; who through the prophets proclaimed God s way of justice and peace; and who through Jesus revealed God s grace and truth for all eternity. We believe in Jesus who proclaimed the good news of God s realm and expanded God s promise of salvation to all people; who healed the sick, cast out demons, and raised people from the dead; who kept the Sabbath day holy, challenged the religious leaders to do the same, and suffered death on the cross on account of his faithfulness to God s law of love; and who was raised by God from the dead and paved the way for a new age of forgiveness and freedom. We believe in the Holy Spirit who is the promise of new life, the source of our faith, and the one who calls and gathers us together in one communion; who dwells within and among us to be the witness of God s love in the world; who gives us the power to forgive others as we have been forgiven; and who makes our hearts yearn for God s justice and peace. The ULC Quilters Fund helps pay for the cost of shipping the quilts, thread, repair of sewing machines, and any other items needed to help in this mission. You may use one of the special offering envelopes in the pew and put it in the offering, or bring it into the church office. He will be speaking about their campaign Save the Ave, which is to stop the second upzone of the U District and the elimination of the unique small businesses along the Ave. Everyone is invited to attend. Let us break bread together! EGH IS NOW OPEN ON SUNDAYS! EGH is looking to churches and community partners to provide a brunch/lunch style meal for approximately 40 women each Sunday. EGH has an extraordinary staff to cook and prepare delicious and nutritious meals Monday through Friday. Since there will be fewer staff on Sundays, they need to arrange for community partners/churches to provide the meal meals that will be welcomed and appreciated by the women! Food would need to be delivered to EGH by 9:30 on Sunday mornings for 10:15/10:30 meal time. Food could be made ahead of time and delivered Friday afternoons (by 3:00) for Sunday. The focus of the retreat will be discerning how the world's hunger and our corporate gladness meet at this moment in our history to shape our life and ministry together at ULC. Those in attendance will have an active voice in a shared planning process that will offer an opportunity to gain perspective on our recent past so we can move into a new day together. We will look at emerging new beginnings, potential continuation/modification of present programs and structures, and laying to rest what is coming to closure in our life together.
