2 WELCOME TO WORSHIP AT UNIVERSITY LUTHERAN CHURCH during this hopeful season of Advent as we anticipate the celebration of Jesus birth and prepare our hearts and minds for the renewal of God s love in our lives. At the conclusion of this service, we invite everyone to join in the Celebration of Community. If you have a birthday or anniversary this month, or would like to share a milestone or some other significant transition in your life, you are invited to come forward for a blessing by the congregation. IT IS WITH GREAT JOY THAT WE WELCOME PASTOR SUSAN SCHNEIDER on this, her first Sunday as pastor of University Lutheran Church. We will celebrate the beginning of her ministry with us during the Fellowship Hour in the lounge and at the Advent Fair downstairs. Don t forget to wear your name tag! WE WELCOME EVERYONE TO THE LORD S TABLE to receive God s gift of forgiveness and the powerful freedom of a new life in Christ. Please come down the center aisle, proceed to the communion rail, and kneel or stand at the first open space. Hold out your hand to receive the bread. Gluten-free wafers are available. Please indicate your desire at the time you are offered the bread. You may drink either from an individual glass, which will be served first, or from the chalice. The individual glasses in the center of the tray contain grape juice (golden color). The outside glasses contain red wine. An acolyte will pass by to pick up your individual glass. In the spirit of continuous communion, please return to your seat via the side aisles after you have drunk from the glass or chalice. After everyone has been served at the communion rail, the ministers will serve anyone in the pew that is unable to come forward. Please indicate your desire in this regard to the pastor. Parents who desire that their children not receive communion may bring them forward for a blessing. (Please be seated) First Lesson Jeremiah 33:14-16 In the Old Testament, righteousness often has to do with being faithful in relationship. God acts righteously both in punishing Israel for its sin and in having mercy. In today s reading, Jerusalem s future name The Lord is our righteousness proclaims that the Lord is even now working salvation for Israel. The days are surely coming, says God, when I will fulfill the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days and at that time I will cause a righteous Branch to spring up for David; and he shall execute justice and righteousness in the land. 10 Second Lesson 1 Thessalonians 3:9-13 Upon Timothy s report from the congregation at Thessalonica, Paul is exuberant with gratitude for them. In this passage from his letter, Paul voices overflowing thanks, joy, and blessings for the people of this growing church. How can we thank God enough for you in return for all the joy that we feel before our God because of you? Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you face to face and restore whatever is lacking in your faith. Now may our God and our Lord Jesus direct our way to you. And may God make you increase and abound in love for one another and for all, just as we abound in love for you. And may God so strengthen your hearts in holiness that you may be blameless before our God at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints. L: Holy Wisdom! Holy Word! C: Thanks be to God. Then they will see the Son of Humanity coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, stand up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near. Then he told them a parable: Look at the fig tree and all the trees; as soon as they sprout leaves you can see for yourselves and know that summer is already near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that the kingdom of God is near. Truly I tell you, this generation will not pass away until all things have taken place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away. Be on guard so that your hearts are not weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and the worries of this life, and that day does not catch you unexpectedly, like a trap. 21 THE ULC GIVING TREE IS UP! This year s tree has tags both for the women in the transition house of Elizabeth Gregory Home and for the Ailanga Junior Seminary School in Tanzania. For EGH, the tags are for gift cards so the women can shop for themselves. When you chose an ornament tag, check the list under the tree that has numbers from the back of the tags. Print your name next to the corresponding number of the tag you selected. It is nice if you can wrap the gift card in a small box as a gift that can be opened. Bring your wrapped box to the church office by December 16. For the Ailanga gifts, bring the tag along with your check or cash for the amount listed on the tag into the church office. These are the only Christmas giving projects that ULC does. Your generous support is very much appreciated. Their concerts are Saturday, December 8 at 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, December 9 at 3:00 p.m. Both are at Ballard First Lutheran Church (2006 NW 65 th St.). The concert is free, but a suggested freewill contribution of $14 would help to cover their expenses. BRING YOUR VOICE OR INSTRUMENT and participate in the 32 nd annual Messiah Sing/Play Along, presented by Music Center of the Northwest and St. John United Lutheran Church. Led by Janice Gockel, the music begins at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, December 9, in the fellowship hall at St. John (5515 Phinney Ave N across from the zoo.) There are no soloists; all singers are invited to sing the arias and the choruses. Vocal scores will be available and instrumental parts will be provided. Admission is free. Come celebrate the holiday season with music from this great barbershop chorus (Frank Gregory & Andy Kopser are members). The 2:00 p.m. concert will also feature the Ballard High School Women s Chamber Choir, two Sweet Adeline Choruses, Seattle Shores and Song of Seattle, as well as the Northwest Girlchoir Amabile. The 7:00 p.m. concert will include the Ballard High School Men s Ensemble, Sound Harmony Sweet Adeline Chorus, and the Northwest Girlchoir Vivace.
