Amen. -The Assembly will please sit- FIRST READING: Jeremiah 17: Thus says the LORD: Cursed are those who trust in mere mortals and make mere flesh their strength, whose hearts turn away from the LORD. 6 They shall be like a shrub in the desert, and shall not see when relief comes. They shall live in the parched places of the wilderness, in an uninhabited salt land. 7 Blessed are those who trust in the LORD, whose trust is the LORD. 8 They shall be like a tree planted by water, sending out its roots by the stream. SECOND READING: 1 Corinthians 15: Now if Christ is proclaimed as raised from the dead, how can some of you say there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 If there is no resurrection of the dead, then Christ has not been raised; 14 and if Christ has not been raised, then our proclamation has been in vain and your faith has been in vain. 15 We are even found to be misrepresenting God, because we testified of God that he raised Christ whom he did not raise if it is true that the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised. 17 If Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile and you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have died in Christ have perished. 19 If for this life only we have GOSPEL: Luke 6:17-26 The holy gospel according to Luke. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh. 22 Blessed are you when people hate you, and when they exclude you, revile you, and defame you on account of the Son of Man. 23 Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, for surely your reward is great in heaven; for that is what their ancestors did to the prophets. 24 But woe to you who are rich, for you have received your consolation. 25 Woe to you who are full now,

6 CREED We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate of the Holy Spirit and the virgin Mary and became truly human. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end. We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. Williams ( ) In the Year King Uzziah Died is one of the iconic anthems in the church music repertoire. It was written in 1935 for the 30 voice professional choir and 80 rank Aeolian-Skinner organ at St. Bartholomew s Episcopal Church in New York City where he served from 1920 to It is a difficult anthem and requires significant choral and organ resources, both of which we are blessed to have at St. Mark s. Certainly many of our biblical stories are operatic in nature, and the King Uzziah portion of Isaiah is full of typical operatic drama, with fire and brimstone, seraphim, burning tongs, and a temple that shakes. You may have noticed the church floor shaking a bit at that point in the anthem; this is done by a technique that still impresses us. Mr. Williams indicates that the organist should pull the lowest 32 stops on the pedal division and play the two lowest notes simultaneously with one foot; the resulting vibrations do make the floor shake! Mr. Williams was born in Wales but his family soon moved to Denver, Colorado where he received his early musical training. After study in France he moved to New York City where he lived for the rest of his life. Besides his appointment at St. Bartholomew s he was the head of the organ department at the Juilliard School. It is fortunate that he had that appointment because of the circumstances of his termination at St. Bartholomew s: it was discovered that he was a gay man and was fired. Thankfully times have changed and St. Bartholomew s, like St. Mark s, is open, welcoming and celebratory of the LGBT community.
