2 WELCOME TO WORSHIP AT UNIVERSITY LUTHERAN CHURCH during this season of Lent. During this penitential season, we will be using many songs from the liturgy Unfailing Light for our worship. WE WELCOME EVERYONE TO THE LORD S TABLE to receive God s gift of forgiveness and the powerful freedom of a new life in Christ. Please come down the center aisle, proceed to the communion rail, and kneel or stand at the first open space. Hold out your hand to receive the bread. Gluten-free wafers are available. Please indicate your desire at the time you are offered the bread. You may drink either from an individual glass, which will be served first, or from the chalice. The individual glasses in the center of the tray contain grape juice (golden color). The outside glasses contain red wine. An acolyte will pass by to pick up your individual glass. In the spirit of continuous communion, please return to your seat via the side aisles after you have drunk from the glass or chalice. After everyone has been served at the communion rail, the ministers will serve anyone in the pew that is unable to come forward. Please indicate your desire in this regard to the pastor. 4 First Lesson Isaiah 55:1-9 To those who have experienced long years in exile, the return to their homeland is a celebration of abundant life. God calls them into an everlasting covenant of love. Those who return to the Lord will enjoy new life and forgiveness, because God s ways are not our ways. Ho, everyone who thirsts, come to the waters; and you that have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without price. Why do you spend your money for that which is not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy? Listen carefully to me, and eat what is good, and delight yourselves in rich food. Incline your ear, and come to me; listen, so that you may live. 5 Contemporary Voice Oscar A. Romero The Violence of Love Oscar Arnulfo Romero, Bishop of El Salvador, martyr, died Today is the anniversary of his assassination. Bishop Romero is remembered for his advocacy on behalf of the poor in El Salvador, though it was not characteristic of his early priesthood. After being appointed archbishop, he preached against the political repression in his country. He and other priests and church workers were considered traitors for their bold stance for justice, especially defending the rights of the poor. After years of threats to his life, Romero was assassinated while presiding at the eucharist. We have never preached violence, except the violence of love, which left Christ nailed to a cross, the violence that we must each do to ourselves to overcome our selfishness and such cruel inequalities among us. The violence we preach is not the violence of the sword, the violence of hatred. It is the violence of love, of brotherhood, the violence that wills to beat weapons into sickles for work. (Please stand as you are able) Gospel Acclamation Gospel Luke 13:1-9 Asked about current tragic events, Jesus turns a lesson about whether suffering is deserved into a hard call to obedience. He then tells a parable that holds out hope that the timeline for ultimate judgment will be tempered by patience. At that very time there were some present who told him about the Galileans whose blood Pilate had mingled with their sacrifices. Jesus asked them, Do you think that because these Galileans suffered in this way they were worse sinners than all other Galileans? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish as they did. Or those eighteen who were killed 5

6 when the tower of Siloam fell on them do you think that they were worse offenders than all the others living in Jerusalem? No, I tell you; but unless you repent, you will all perish just as they did. Then he told this parable: A man had a fig tree planted in his vineyard; and he came looking for fruit on it and found none. So he said to the gardener, See here! For three years I have come looking for fruit on this fig tree, and still I find none. Cut it down! Why should it be wasting the soil? He replied, Sir, let it alone for one more year, until I dig around it and put manure on it. If it bears fruit next year, well and good; but if not, you can cut it down. Today we will consider how we still would like to be remembered in the congregation through our legacy, which will have lasting positive results that will impact the mission and ministry of University Lutheran Church for years to come. 18 MAUNDY THURSDAY IS APRIL 18. We will gather for a simple meal in the lounge at 6:00 p.m. and re-enact Jesus final meal with his disciples, including the sharing of the bread and the cup that has become our sacrament of Holy Communion. Using the compiled readings from all four gospels, we will get a composite picture of what this evening was like and will bring Jesus interactions and instructions to life through these readings. If you are able and willing to bring a pot of soup, a loaf of bread, or a beverage, please contact the church office or sign up on the Worship Registration form. We will also need a pitcher and basin for each table. Please sign up on the Worship Registration form if you can bring these items. ON GOOD FRIDAY EVENING, APRIL 19, we will gather at 7:30 p.m. for our traditional Tenebrae Worship Service as the choir leads us through an evening of choral reflection on the suffering and death of Jesus while passages of Jesus passion and death are read aloud and the lights of the sanctuary are slowly dimmed before the Christ candle is removed from the sanctuary. You are invited to join in this solemn service in preparation for and anticipation of the dawn of Easter when Jesus will be raised from the dead. YOU ARE INVITED TO START University Lutheran s Easter celebration with breakfast in the Fellowship Hall on Sunday, April 21.
