WELCOME TO WORSHIP AT UNIVERSITY LUTHERAN CHURCH on this last Sunday of the church year as we gather to acknowledge and give thanks for the reign of Jesus and the presence of God s Spirit in our lives. As we are fed by God s Word and with the bread and fruit of the vine at Holy Communion this day, we welcome the opportunity to gather in union with all of our sisters and brothers throughout the world to give praise to God s glorious name. WE WELCOME EVERYONE TO THE LORD S TABLE to receive God s gift of forgiveness and the powerful freedom of a new life in Christ. Please come down the center aisle, proceed to the communion rail, and kneel or stand at the first open space. Hold out your hand to receive the bread. Gluten-free wafers are available. Please indicate your desire at the time you are offered the bread. You may drink either from an individual glass, which will be served first, or from the chalice. The individual glasses in the center of the tray contain grape juice (golden color). The outside glasses contain red wine. An acolyte will pass by to pick up your individual glass. In the spirit of continuous communion, please return to your seat via the side aisles after you have drunk from the glass or chalice. After everyone has been served at the communion rail, the ministers will serve anyone in the pew that is unable to come forward. Please indicate your desire in this regard to the pastor. Parents who desire that their children not receive communion may bring them forward for a blessing. PLEASE INDICATE YOUR ATTENDANCE at worship today and your participation in Holy Communion by completing the enclosed Worship Registration form and placing it in the offering plate. Please join us for fellowship and refreshments in the lounge after the service. THERE ARE BABY CHANGING TABLES available in both the men s & women s restrooms (across from the church office). There is also one in the Narthex. CHILD CARE is available in the Nursery for children of any age. Ask the usher for directions. OUR PRAYERS are with those living in fear or sorrow, those who are lonely, those that are unheard and anxious and for our members who are in need of strength and prayer. TEXTS FOR NEXT SUNDAY: Isaiah 2:1-5; Romans 13:11-14; Matthew 24:

Prayer of the Day A: Let us pray together: C: God of righteousness and peace, you reign over all that you have created and dwell in all living creatures. We pray that your Spirit will give us the wisdom and strength to love as we have been loved, to forgive as we have been forgiven, and to serve as we have been served by Jesus, our Savior. Help us to be ambassadors of your reconciliation in a world that is in constant turmoil because of the oppression, corruption, and violence that permeates our land. Grant us your peace in the name of our Prince of Peace. Amen. (Please be seated) First Lesson Ezekiel 35:11-16, Thus says God: I myself will search for my sheep, and will seek them out. As shepherds seek out their flocks when they are among their scattered sheep, so I will seek out my sheep. I will rescue them from all the places to which they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness. I will bring them out from the peoples and gather them from the countries, and will bring them into their own land; and I will feed them on the mountains of Israel, by the watercourses, and in all the inhabited parts of the land. I will feed them with good pasture, and the mountain heights of Israel shall be their pasture; there they shall lie down in good grazing land, and they shall feed on rich pasture on the mountains of Israel. I myself will be the shepherd of my sheep, and I will make them lie down. I will seek the lost, and I will bring back the strayed, and I will bind up the injured, and I will strengthen the weak, but the fat and the strong I will destroy. I will feed them with justice. Therefore, thus says God to them: I myself will judge between the fat sheep and the lean sheep. Because you pushed with flank and shoulder, and butted at all the weak animals with your horns until you scattered them far and wide, I will save my flock, and they shall no longer be ravaged; and I will judge between sheep and sheep. I will set up over them one shepherd, my servant David, and he shall feed them: he shall feed them and be their shepherd. And I will be their God, and my servant David shall be prince among them; I, your God, have spoken. L: Holy Wisdom. Holy Word. C: Thanks be to God. Second Lesson Ephesians 1:15-23 For this reason, ever since I heard about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all God s people, I have not stopped giving thanks for you, remembering you in my prayers. I keep asking that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, may give you the Spirit of wisdom and revelation, so that you may know Christ better. I pray that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened in order that you may know the hope to which God has called you, the riches of God s glorious inheritance in God s holy people, and God s incomparably great power for us who believe. That power is the same as the mighty strength God exerted when Christ 6
was raised from the dead and is seated at the right hand of God in the heavenly realms, far above all rule and authority, power and dominion, and every name that is invoked, not only in the present age but also in the one to come. And God placed all things under Christ s feet and appointed him to be head over everything for the church, which is his body, the fullness of him who fills everything in every way. L: Holy Wisdom. Holy Word. C: Thanks be to God. (Please stand) Gospel Acclamation P: The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the twenty-fifth chapter. Gospel Matthew 25:31-46 Jesus said, When the Son of Humanity comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne. All the nations will be gathered before him, and he will separate the people one from another as a shepherd separates the sheep from the goats. He will put the sheep on his right and the goats on his left. Then the King will say to those on his right, Come, you who are blessed by God; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me. Then the righteous will answer him, Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you? The King will reply, Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me. 7
Then he will say to those on his left, Depart from me, you who are cursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me nothing to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me nothing to drink, I was a stranger and you did not invite me in, I needed clothes and you did not clothe me, I was sick and in prison and you did not look after me. They also will answer, Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or needing clothes or sick or in prison, and did not help you? He will reply, Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me. Then they will go away to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life. P: The Gospel of the risen Christ. (Please be seated) Sermon The Victim s Name Is Jesus Matthew 25:31-46 (Please stand) Hymn of the Day At the Name of Jesus Green Hymnal #179 Apostle s Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints the forgiveness of sons, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. Prayers of the People A: Hear us, O God, C: Your Mercy is Great! Exchange of Peace P: The peace of God be with you always. C: And also with you. 8
(Please be seated) Children s Message Offering/Musical Offering Lift Up Your Heads, O Ye Gates William Mathias Lift up your heads, O ye gates, And be ye lift up, ye everlasting doors, And the King of glory shall come in. Who is this King of glory? The Lord strong and mighty, The Lord strong and mighty, The Lord mighty in battle. Who is this King of glory? The Lord of hosts, The Lord of hosts, He is the King of glory. (Please stand) Offertory Hymn 9
Offertory Prayer A: Let us pray together: C: Gracious and generous God, as we come to the end of this church year, we look back on all of the blessings that you have bestowed upon us and give you thanks by offering to you these fruits of our labor. Use them to hold this congregation together in love, to spread the good news of your love to all people, and to make peace in the world through the power of your love. Bless this bread and fruit of the vine so that all who partake of this holy meal may be nourished and strengthened for whatever call you extend to us as your servants in this world. We pray in Jesus beloved name. Amen. The Great Thanksgiving P: May God be with you. C: And also with you. P: Lift up your hearts. C: We lift them to the lord. P: Let us give thanks to our gracious God. C: It is right to give God thanks and praise. P: It is indeed right and salutary... and join their unending hymn: 10
Eucharistic Prayer P: Blessed are you, O holy God. You are the Life and Light of all. By your powerful word you created all things. Through the prophets you called your people to be a light to the nations. Blessed are you for Jesus, your Light, shining in our darkness and revealing to us your grace and truth. In the night in which he was betrayed, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me. Remembering, therefore, his preaching and healing, his dying and rising, and his promise to come again, we await that day when all the universe will rejoice in your holy and life-giving light. By your Spirit bless us and this meal, that refreshed with this heavenly food, we may be light for the world, revealing the brilliance of Jesus, our Christ, through whom all glory and honor is yours, both now and forever. C: Amen. Lord s Prayer Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name, your kingdom come, your will be done, on earth as in heaven. Give us today our daily bread. Forgive us our sins as we forgive those who sin against us. Save us from the time of trial and deliver us from evil. For the kingdom, the power, and the glory are yours, now and forever. Amen. (Please be seated) Communion Distribution Jesus Shall Reign Green Hymnal #530 The Head that Once Was Crowned Green Hymnal #173 Rejoice, the Lord is King Green Hymnal #171 (Please stand) Communion Blessing P: May the body and blood of Jesus, our Christ, grant us the grace to keep us faithful unto death, and give us the crown of life for all eternity. C: Amen. 11
Post Communion Hymn Post Communion Prayer A: Let us pray together: C: Ever present and faithful God, we give you thanks for this gift of life and freedom that we have received through this holy meal. Help us to be strong in faith, to live in gratitude, and to endure with patience all that may befall us as followers of Jesus, our Christ. Unite us in our testimony and witness to your love and forgiveness, and bring us into the company of all of your saints in the eternal realm of your peace. We pray in the name of Jesus. Amen. Benediction Closing Hymn Crown Him with Many Crowns Green Hymnal #170 Dismissal A: Go in peace! Live in peace! Make peace happen! C: Thanks be to God! Postlude 12
