1 U n it e d M e t h o d ist March 2011 Monthly Newsletter of Live Oak United Methodist Church In this Issue Pastor s Desk Nugget s from the Bible Sharing Our Good News Church Picnic Awana Church Newsletter Sermon s Online Thank You Important Dates in April In Honor Of In Memory Of Pastor s Desk Christ s Defeating Death The month of April means the Easter Season is here. We are looking forward to the season that reminds us of the greatest event the world has ever known. The resurrection of Jesus the Messiah is the one event that brings hope and promise to the human heart, unlike any other event in history. The resurrection of Jesus declares that death has been defeated and that Jesus has brought life to a world filled with death. Jesus declared, "I am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in me though they die, yet shall they live." John 11; This promise is what brings hope to the human heart, joy to the soul, and comfort to the grieving. The resurrection is the one event that brings all of the Bible together, and is the cornerstone of the Christian faith. I pray that the month of April will be a time of faith, hope and love in your life and that it will be a time of joy and celebration as we share the promise of the resurrection. I want to encourage you to celebrate this wonderful time of year with us at Live Oak, and invite a friend, co-worker, or neighbor to hear the series on the "Passion of the Messiah" and how what happened 2,000 years ago so impacts our lives today. Let s celebrate the joy of Easter and announce to the world, " HE IS RISEN" and because He lives we live as well. Have a great Easter, and as always, I hope to see you Sunday. God bless, Mark C.
2 Colossians 2:8-10; Colossians 3:2 Because lest anyone cheat you through philosophy of the world, and not according to Christ. For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power. Set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth. The early church was constantly faced with those who tried to teach a different gospel, not the good news that Paul the apostle and other inspired writers taught. That is, man is not saved by God s grace by faith (believing) alone but by works doing things to gain God s favor. These false teachers said, Do enough things to please God and maybe you ll make it to eternal life. The question is How many good things would it take? Do as much as you can and hope for the best. The true revelation from God says I ve already done all the work through the death of my son. All you do is believe and trust in the shed blood at the cross. Then you can know you have eternal life - no guess work. John 3:16 makes this truth very clear. The Colossian church faced five major threats to the truth of the gospel as taught in the scriptures. Today in the age of grace we face the same ones. These threats are simply deception in different forms. Proverbs 25:14 Whoever falsely boasts of giving Is like clouds and wind without rain. The first threat was that of enticing word - seductive, persuasive words that please our natural man but contain no Biblical truth (Col. 2:4-7). The second threat was vain philosophy (Col. 2:8-10). Such things were teaching on how to become spiritual, but not based on Bible truth. The third threat was that of the judgment of men or legality (Col. 2:11-17). In the ancient world when a law or ordinance was written, papyrus or vellum (animal skin) was used. Both were expensive, so later the material was used again. To reuse it, the previous writing had to be wiped off. This paper was then nailed on a board and posted where it could be seen by all. When Paul said that He has forgiven you all (not some, but past, present and future) your trespasses having nailed them to the cross then wiped them out, the Colossian believers knew exactly what he meant. The fourth threat was improper worship or mysticism. This involved secret rituals and teachings that only a few select men had and knew. It also involved having deep spiritual experiences and visions. This led to confusion on the part of the average person and spiritual snobbery of the teacher. It was believing man s wisdom, teaching and ideas instead of God s (Col. 2:18-19 The fifth threat was that of the doctrine of men or legalism (Col. 2:20-23). Many of the believers in Paul s day, as well as today, tried to live by man s rules, not by the principles as taught by God for the age of grace. Paul talks about the liberty we have in Christ in Galatians 5. Basic principles of the world would include spirit, angels, stars, planets, and other things of the world. Astrology was the queen of sciences in Paul s day. So, these heresies had three major influences Jewish, mystic, and Greek philosophy. The same is true today. Paul s answer to this deception was for the believer to stand in the truth of the scriptures and not be moved or influenced, and to set one s mind on things above and not on things of the earth, for we are in Christ and He is in us. When He appears, then we will also appear with Him in glory. In the mean time, we wait for the blessed hope. ARA REMINDER: Please contact church office at or at liveoakumc@aol.com for any removals or additions to the prayer list on our church bulletin.

On April 29th and 30th, our youth will endure a 30 hour period, where they will fast from food, in an attempt to raise hunger awareness. During this period of time, they will be provided with juice and water to sustain sufficient nourishment. This is an opportunity for the kids to not only to experience hunger, but also to learn about hunger, take action against hunger, and in turn save lives. Our main goal is to broaden our youths views on the daily things that we tend to take for granted. Such as eating whenever they want and having clean water. The weekend will be full of games, worship, bible studies, as well as an opportunity to give back to the community around us through mission work.
