2 Church ocus SEPTEMBER 2015 Pastor s Desk The month of September seems to be a unique month historically. One of the historical events we will never forget is the terrorist attack on 9/11/01. That day (event) changed America forever. It s a day where hopefully we will all pause and pray for our country and for God's protection. For many others the hurricanes Katrina and Rita 10 years ago were life-changing events as many lost homes, businesses, and relocated to other areas. Though Katrina hit at the end of August, the devastation, and destruction lasted well into September followed by hurricane Rita. Seven years ago the country experienced a financial meltdown unlike we have experienced since the Great Depression. Many lost jobs, savings accounts, retirements, and homes during the "Great Recession." So many are asking, the questions what should we expect, anticipate and prepare for in September First of all we know that the peak of hurricane season happens in September. Therefore living in South Central Louisiana it is always wise and prudent to be prepared for any natural disaster such as hurricanes, flooding and power outages (Proverbs 22:3). It is always wise to have extra water, canned goods, batteries, fuel (gas, propane, oil) and cleaning supplies in the event there is a disruption in our ability to have some of the basics of life. We also know that historically September has been the month where there have been economic downturns. Thus it may be a good idea to review investments, debt consolidation and other economic goals that we seem to "put off" for another day. The Bible declares we do not know what a day may bring, thus it is always important to seek God's will, to know God's grace, to rest in God's gift of eternal life and to be prepared for what may come our way personally, or nationally. In the month of September we will be looking at the "Feasts of Israel" that occur in the fall season primarily September and the meaning behind those feasts and the message they bring to God's people. So as we approach a new season and a new month, let s be prayerful, prepared, and prudent with the blessings God has given. Hope to see you Sunday! Mark C. For the administration of this service not only supplies the needs of the saints, but also is abounding through many thanksgivings to God 2 Corinthians 9:11, THRIFT SHOP REPORT Our church has a Thrift Shop in the old white church building. It was started many years ago as a means to help people who needed free clothing. Now, we are open to everyone, and charge a small amount for clothing and household goods. The money we make is used for various needs in our church and community. We pay for our own utilities, maintenance, repairs, and supplies. We are operated entirely by volunteers. Last year we made contributions to our church s Military Fund and Benevolent Fund. We also made donations to the Livingston Parish Christmas Crusade and the Live Oak Highway Memorial Fund. We provided bereavement food when a church member died. We bought double doors for the front of the old sanctuary, shirts for the youth bell choir, and tables for the Family Life Center. Our mission is still to provide items free of charge to people who need them. We are open Monday and Friday 11:00-2:00, and Wednesday 8:30-12:30. Through Christ, Thank you RoseAnne Erwin and Tim Chavers Family Nuggets from the Bible I Corinthians 11:2-16 When involved in Bible Study there are two major elements to consider. First, the principle of concept who spoke (or wrote), to whom did it apply, what was the culture of the day and what was the proper and acceptable practice of society in which the scripture was given. This is one of the passages, which have a purely local and temporary significance. The early church in Corinth had many problems. The believers had come from several different elements of society. This was a general mixture of various kinds of people but the two major elements were Jewish and Pagan (Gentile). We must study this chapter in the light not of the twenty-first century, but of the first. Paul stressed the importance of the veil in the east, the oriental lands. It represented the subordination of women for the sake of order and essential partnership of man and woman so that the partnership may be more fruitful for both. The veil was also a sign of a great protection of a woman s modesty, security and respect. In Jewish eyes the status of women was that of property. In the synagogue they had no share in worship. In Corinth unveiled woman was a prostitute. Many had their heads shaved due to the fact that they were vestal virgins in the Pagan Temple of Aphrodite. This section of scripture has long since ceased to have any relevance for us today yet it sheds a flood of light on domestic affairs and problems of the early church. But Paul solves the problems by God s principles, which are eternal. Christianity with grace and the law of love was the greatest liberator of women and their status in society. In Galatians 5, Paul discusses the liberty we have under grace liberty but not a license. Through love serve one another. (Gal 5:1-13) God s eternal principles involve love, humility, respect for authority and glorification of Him. There is no Jew or Greek, there is neither slave nor free, there is neither male or female; for you are all one in Christ Jesus. ARA
