1 FAITH at WORK Faith Lutheran Church March 2015 Greetings, Sisters and Brothers in Christ Jesus, Well, here we are in the season of Lent a 40-day journey (not counting Sundays) when we hear again the story of Jesus as he prepares to enter Jerusalem on his way to the cross. This is a time for us to ponder anew what the Almighty can do as we search our hearts and minds and contemplate what it means to be followers of Jesus, the Christ, and how that affects our daily lives. Perhaps you will give up something for Lent. Perhaps you will take on something: a daily devotional (a good one is available on the table in front of the fireplace), maybe you ll volunteer someplace you haven t before. Perhaps you ll determine to reach out to friends and relatives you haven t heard from in a while. Maybe a break in the usual routine. Maybe you ll decide to remember your baptism everyday when you shower or wash your hands (Continued on page 2) Maybe you ll decide to remember your baptism everyday when you shower or wash your hands or load the dishwasher -Pastor Dawn In This Issue Events and Announcements in no particular order Faith Lutheran Church 930 Queen Ave SW, Albany OR faithalbany@proaxis.com website: Pastor Dawn Gregg or Missionary Newsletter People Calendars

2 (Continued from page 1) or load the dishwasher purposefully and intentionally dipping your hand in the water and tracing the sign of the cross over the one that you were marked with when you were baptized. Pretty simple and easy and there s water all around us. I usually add something about thank you for the night, and please bless this day with peace and joy. Let me be your hands doing your work with all whom I meet. Whatever you do, do it in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, knowing full well that God loves you and is excited to be included so specifically!! I think that s awesome. Some interest has been expressed in wanting to know how the Bible came to be what we have now. Who wrote what when? Is the Bible a history book? Did Moses really write the Pentateuch (google it if you don t know what that word means) (Or come to class)? Who wrote the first Gospel? All of us have questions about scripture, all of us have preconceived ideas about scripture, all of us have certain ideas about what scripture means in light of the world today. I believe God just loves it when we have questions about God. It is a sign of our confidence in our God who gave us incredible minds so that we can think and ponder about the faith of our fore-parents (yes, there women involved, too), way back to those talked about in the Bible. After all, 21 st Century folks do not live in a 1 st Century world, so how does what came out of those folks a few thousand years ago apply to this day and age. We all know that some of it doesn t, but there are truths there anyway. So, I m offering a class beginning this Sunday, March 1 st during which we will take a look at some modern Biblical scholarship and thought as a way to discuss some of the background of how the Bible came to be what we have now, and how the writings came about, who might have written them, and what those writings have to say to us today. Please join me during the Sunday School hour beginning at 9:00 am this Sunday, March 1 st. to begin this journey. It will take as many sessions as it takes. Who knows, maybe we ll get into it and decide to delve deeper and deeper. What an idea!! Oh, and bring your favorite Bible the one you make notes in. And, don t forget Jim Preston s class where he leads folks through a look at the Gospel lesson for the current Sunday. It s always a good discussion among people who just want to know Jesus better. Bring your Bible!! I hope you will join one of these opportunities for learning more about God and each other as we sojourn together, God s people living and sharing our faith and ourselves. In the meantime may you continue to know the presence of God in every moment of your lives. In Christ s love, Pr Dawn CALLING ALL BAKERS Relay for Life is having a bake sale April 10 and 11, 2015 (during the Rummage Sale see page 4). Dear friends and family, MISSIONARY NEWSLETTER Last month Shedd had the privilege of spending two weeks in Colombia to teach national missionaries the Growing Participator Approach (GPA) to learning indigenous languages and cultures. Before the seven-day intensive course, the coordinator Jenny helped him arrange the logistics so that each group of four students could practice specific techniques with an indigenous speaker. After the course, he evaluated each of the 18 participants. Basically, they all gained important tools which they can use in their work with the remote groups of Colombia. These missionaries are part of Misincol, a Colombian mission which focuses on reaching indigenous groups of Colombia. Our Mexican friends Gustavo and Inez live in Shell, Ecuador, where they serve with Gospel Recordings. Gustavo had recorded the book of Mark in Salasaca in (Maybe you remember that Shedd and Larry invited and trained Salasaca people who had speaking parts for that recording.) Gustavo and Inez heard about the GPA course being offered in Bogota, and she travelled there to attend it. She was excited about what she learned, so she asked their supervisor about hosting such a course in Ecuador. That GPA course might take place in early April at their Shell training center where young Latin American missionaries learn to make audio recordings of scripture in the heart language of indigenous peoples. We leave on March 17th for Ecuador, after David s Special Olympics basketball season is done. We just found out that another excellent workshop will be held in Ecuador the week before we arrive. The intent of that workshop will be to help indigenous groups assess the vitality of their language and with that knowledge to set goals and plan strategies which will strengthen their language if the community wants that. Please pray for our partner Larry as he arranges the logistics and invites participants. May everybody involved be guided toward appropriate solutions which will benefit the indigenous peoples. The Salasaca participants will appreciate that the course is being taught by three Peruvian trainers (two of whom are Quechuas from a culture similar to theirs). May the Lord bless you richly, showing you his unending care. Shedd and Kris Please pray: A compilation of several New Testament books will be published soon. May the Quichua words jump off the page and ignite life in the hearts of the readers. May the March language vitality workshop and the April GPA workshop equip people to minister in their own communities and beyond. May relationships be strengthened and God s kingdom be advanced. Paul s book to the Philippians is getting closer to being well revised. May we be able to get it checked for comprehension in the community while we are there in the last half of March so that it can be sent on to our consultant after that. (BTW, Shedd had the privilege of meeting our consultant in Bogota where he lives and serves. His consulting has been via internet, so it was a blessing for the two to meet each other.) Thank you so much to all who helped make this project come to life. We need care givers for David during our March trip to Ecuador. We re grateful for three tickets we purchased to Ecuador July 14 to August 6, when David will accompany us. May he enjoy his trip back home. -Check the Fellowship Hall bulletin board for pictures from Shedd and Kris
