3 He has risen indeed!! "And suddenly there was a great earthquake; for an angel of The Lord, descending from heaven, came and rolled back the stone and sat on it. His appearance was like lightning, and his clothing white as snow. For fear of him the guards shook and became like dead men. But the angel said to the women, "Do not be afraid..." (Matthew. 28 NRSV) It doesn't really matter if you know the story by heart, or are hearing if for the first time. It doesn't matter if there are questions about its literal accuracy, or why this story is different in the various Gospels, or anything like that. This story draws you in. Each detail makes you ask a question. "A great earthquake?" "An angel descending down from heaven and sitting on the stone?!" "An invitation out of fear into - what?" One can feel the impact of each word. You are there, or here, now! Those guards, sitting there like dead men... you can almost touch them. You know what their strange presence means - you are free, and violence has been set in stone. You step lightly into a parallel dimension. You are in a Jesus world, there before the empty tomb. Don't let the trumpets and the lilies lead you back into the world and victory and power. It is a ruse. You are in a wilderness, being spoken to individually, in a diffuse light of possibility. I doesn't really matter if you know this story by heart, or are hearing it for the first time. If you open yourself to it s telling - it will change you. "Do not be afraid; I know that you are looking for Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for he has been raised, as he said. Come, see the place where he lay. Then go quickly and tell his disciples, "He has been raised from the dead, and indeed he is going ahead of you to Galilee; there you will see him. 'This is my message for you." I really didn't come to church looking for Jesus who was crucified. I know about Easter already. But I will confess that I expect to see death and disappointment in lots of places these days. Is that the same thing? The message is clear. "Do not be afraid... check it out, expect to be surprised... then go and share whatever it is that you've discovered, or not discovered, with the others. Jesus now goes out ahead of you!" Think about that one for a moment. "Jesus now goes out ahead of you!" Jesus is not behind you cleaning up the mess of your life that so many people seem to want you to focus on. No, Jesus is ahead of you, blazing a new trail into tomorrow. This story is about what is and can be - not what was. Move. Walk. Go. Keep up or you'll get lost!! So, the story goes on to say that the women left, still afraid, but joyful. Sorta changed and sorta not I suppose. It takes time - that's fair! And they meet Jesus along the way. That's unexpected. And they're told again not to be afraid. That is expected, I think. As I say, maybe I'm just slow, but big changes take a little time to sink in with me. I can't just stop being uncertain and afraid because somebody tells me to. Then Jesus tells them to keep going, and they do. "So they left the tomb quickly with fear and great joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 Suddenly Jesus met them and said, "Greetings!" And they came to him, took hold of his feet, and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, "Do not be afraid; go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me." This story grabs you. It draws you in - and then it sends you out. It's suppose to do that, and either you let yourself be pushed and pulled around in this way, or you sit there like those guards, dead to the real world around you. See if you can't stay just a moment in that diffuse light of dawn. See if you can't embrace the uncertainty of what an empty tomb and an angel looking you in the eye might mean. Don't be afraid. I mean, do be afraid, but don't let that fear and uncertainty drag you away from the tomb. When you're ready, then walk away. Walk away with at least a "maybe" in your mind. Or run to ground yourself in the arms of those who know you. Head back to Galilee. Resurrection means something that was dead is coming to life. That's Jesus, yes, of course, but it is also something in you. Something that is dead is you, or has been dead in you, or maybe the whole of your most authentic self. Resurrection means something that was dead has returned to life. It is Jesus who died and now lives. Yes! And it is you who has been dead, or afraid, or discouraged who is also birthed from the tomb this day with Jesus. This is also why the trumpets blow. Breathe deeply. Feel your new skin. What can now happen that couldn't before the stone was rolled away? Blessed Easter! Bishop Dave Brauer-Rieke, Oregon Synod - ELCA

5 Dog and Puppies at Church? What? Yes, we have had dogs and puppies at church because the Sunday School has decided to use their offering to help the Assistance Dog Program. The program is based in Keizer, Oregon and is titled The Joys of Living ASSISTANCE DOGS. The mission is to provide a skilled and devoted companion to support and assist a person with disabilities creating a cohesive team focused on building a life of greater freedom and independence. The director, Joy St. Peter, brought one of the trained dogs, Mason, to Faith in March to demonstrate what the dog/s can do. She was there during the education hour from 9 10 am. She said they had just had a litter of puppies. She said she would be pleased to bring some puppies to show us and to help the puppies be socialized by being exposed to people. When she phoned to tell me said she would only be bringing 8 puppies, I thought, whoa! how does one transport 8 puppies. Well, then, easy to transport 8 puppies by using an enclosed stroller to keep the puppies contained and safe and besides she would be bringing the momma, too. There were 9 puppies in the litter but one was slightly fragile so was left at home. On April 13 Joy and her helper came right after church with one momma dog and 8 three-week-old golden retriever/golden lab puppies. We chose a place out of the way where blankets were spread. Anyone wanting to hold the puppies needed to take their shoes off, clean their hands and step onto the blanket where they sat to be handed a lovely golden puppy with a towel wrapped around it. The shoes off and then stepping onto the blanket is a procedure to restrict contamination with the babies from where our shoes have been. Sitting on the blanket protects the puppy is it wriggles off the lap so they don t fall too far. The towel is to was to help cradle these new creatures and to wipe up any leakage! Jill said she would be happy to come back in a few months to show how the training of the dogs is progressing. We have about $450 right now. When Sunday School is over for summer break we will send a check to the Assistance Dog Program. Training the dogs costs $7000. We are not able to cover the total cost but we can help someone in need of an assistance dog. (We also tithe 10% back to Faith Lutheran.) It is especially a good project because we can see where the money is going. If you are interested in learning more go to Children and adults ever so gently stroking the adorable puppies!

6 They re headed to Los Angeles! A group from our church will depart this summer (tentatively set for the middle of August) for a short-term mission trip with the Center for Student Missions. They will be serving in the urban center. To learn more about this trip please talk to Kaitlyn or log onto CSM s website ( They are raising funds through a unique 144 envelopes plan through this month. Pick up and/or return your envelopes at any time. And please remember to bring your cans, bottles and loose change for FLY to go towards this trip. They ask for your continued support throughout the coming months as they prepare for this wonderful opportunity. SCOUTS COMPETE AT CAMPORALL Dear Folks at Faith Lutheran, As part of my duties as new scout master, I've just added the church to my contact list for Troop Since, the church is our chartered organization it only seems proper we keep you informed regarding our activities. Last weekend we participated in a "Camperal." That is a gathering of Scouts from several districts. This year the organizers are expecting units from Calapooia, Willamette, Sunset Trail and Benton districts. Our troop belongs to the Calapooia District, which is almost all of Linn County, and is part of Cascade Pacific Council, which encompasses eighteen counties in Northwestern Oregon and Southwestern Washington. Camperal is big because it only occurs once every four years, the organizers of Camperal are expecting about 800 boys and adults. Just wanted to let you know how our Scouts fared at Camporall. Four separate districts participated: Willamette; Benton; Yaquina; and our own Calapooia. Fifty three patrols from those four districts competed against each other in eleven different events. Troop 99's Ice Dragons came in fourth place over-all out of the 53-patrols, and that was after not competing in one of the events! The other Troop 99 patrol competing was the Gnomes. It looks like they had some regretful timing issues - which can easily happen at an large competition like this - and consequently they were not able to compete in two of the events. However, after looking at their average scores for the other events, I submit to you that if they had been able to compete in all the events, they could have easily ended up as one of the over-all top ten patrols! A very decent showing by both patrols indeed! Great job Scouts! Arnold Poole Cornerstone Youth Outreach Center! 960 Queen Ave, Albany CALL: OPEN: Mon, Tues, Thurs, Fri 2:30 to 6 pm; Wed 1:30 to 5 pm
