2 Saint Mary s Parish 8 Church St. ~ Holliston, MA ~ ~ (508) Dear Members of the St. Mary s Parish Family, January 13, 2019 Feast of the Baptism of the Lord Today s Feast of the Baptism of the Lord is a transitional celebration marking both the conclusion of the Christmas Season, and the start of Ordinary Time. Whereas the commercial / secular world would have Christmas start the day after Thanksgiving and then be promptly extinguished on December 26, in the Church we do not begin to anticipate Christmas until December 17, and then we bask in the joy of it through today s Feast. I congratulate those who kept their outdoor Christmas lights on all the way to this weekend! In Baptism, it is said that the water makes us holy. But at His Baptism it was Jesus who made the water holy, so that we all might be baptized into Him. Being sinless, Jesus had no need to be baptized. But as in all things, He showed us the way by His own example. He demonstrated that He never asks us to do anything that He Himself was not willing to humbly undergo. In Baptism, one is immersed into the mystery of Christ s own life, death and resurrection. In the waters of Baptism original sin is washed from the soul, as we are reborn in the Lord. On this last day of the Christmas Season, let us each consider our own Baptismal commitment to the Lord. Let us seek even more fervently to be His faithful sons and daughters living, loving and forgiving as Jesus taught. There is no better time. For as author Howard Thurman so beautifully expressed When the song of the angels is stilled, When the star in the sky is gone, When the kings and princes are home, When the shepherds are back with their flocks, The work of Christmas begins: To find the lost, To heal the broken, To feed the hungry, To release the prisoner, To rebuild the nations, To bring peace among brothers, To make music in the heart. 4 Monday, January 21, :00 PM; Deacon John Barry Presiding St. Mary s Annual Holy Hour for Life A Holy Hour for Life with Adoration, Music & Benediction will be held on Monday, January 21 at 7:00 PM in the church. This Holy Hour, held at parishes throughout the Archdiocese in observance of the National Day of Prayer and Penance, is in support of those attending the annual March for Life pilgrimage to Washington, D.C. We will pray also for anyone affected by life s tragedies, including those who have been wounded by abortion, euthanasia, or suicide. We will pray also for a greater awareness and respect for the dignity of all human life from the moment of conception to natural death, and that those who govern us may be guided by justice, truth, and a love for the gift of life. The Holy Hour for Life is organized by the Boston Deacons for Life in collaboration with the Pro-Life Office of the Archdiocese of Boston. Please join us, all are welcome!

Our first week we will welcome speakers Sandy and Mitch Liro, Denver Scripture Course Graduates, St. Mary s Parishioners. This winter we will hear inspiring talks on the upcoming Sunday Mass scripture readings. We will learn new methods to read and meditate upon scripture. Please join us for our winter program, whether you can attend each week or just some weeks. WINGS meets on Wednesday mornings from 9:45 11:15 AM in Father Haley Hall. Nurturing childcare is available. For information call Linda at MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH GROUP: Our next trip is this Saturday, January 19, Snowtubing. We will be departing for Nashoba Valley s Tubing Park at 4:15 PM and returning to the Parish Center around 9 PM. Please eat at home before you go, or bring food or cash to buy (pricey) food at Nashoba. Our next Meeting is Sunday, January 27 from 6:30 8:30 PM, a half hour longer because of the 12 th Annual Battle of the Sexes. MARY S EPIC MEETING TONIGHT 7:30 TO 8:45 PM IN FATHER HALEY HALL: Join EPIC for our January Meeting ($5 Dues). The meeting will feature an Extreme Reverse Scavenger Hunt, food, friends and fun. Our faith activity and small group discussions will be on the themes of Mission and Service. There will also be lots of information on our Summer Mission Trip to Gainesville, Florida (July 14 20). Teens interested in coming on the Mission Trip should bring their Indication of Interest Form (should have been mailed to you, though there will be extras at the meeting). Also save the date for January 23 where staff from Catholic Heart Workcamp will be doing a presentation on the mission trip at 7:00 PM in the Lower Church Hall. If you have any questions regarding your statement please call the rectory at St. Mary s is grateful to both those who faithfully use Our Sunday Visitor envelopes and those who use direct banking. If using envelopes, please remember to write the enclosed amount on the outside. If this is done, the money counters only have to verify the contents. If it is not done, then they also have to write the amount for you, which adds substantially to the time needed to count the collection for deposit. Thank you for helping our volunteers! 2019 CORI RENEWAL ALERT: All active volunteers (17 years and older) must complete a 2019 CORI. Forms are being sent out to all volunteers via Constant Contact as an attachment. If you have access to a printer, you may fill them in at home and come to the Religious Education Office for verification and signature. You will need to show a photo ID and place your driver s license number on the form. Bring your completed CORI form to the RE office or to a Staff member. CORI forms are available on the table outside the Religious Education Office.

7 SAINT MARY S RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM JANUARY 13, 2019 CLOW- CHILDREN K-6: CHILDREN S LITURGY OF THE WORD: Today, Sunday, January 13, the children will be dismissed from the main assembly and led to the lower church hall to hear what Jesus has to tell them in the Gospel. Please note: Younger children are welcome but must be accompanied by their parents and be able to sit and engage in the lesson. Older children are welcome to assist the adult leaders. Each year St. Mary s Parish offers a Christian Sexuality workshop for Grade 5 children in March. Parents are invited to view the program ahead and decide if they want their child to attend. The program is a video broken down into specific topics concerning how the body is changing and how God intends marriage to be a plan for bringing new life into the world. The children s workshop will be held on Sat., March 23 at 9:00 AM. Parents and guardians who wish that their child attend the workshop in March must attend this workshop and submit a signed Permission Form or a signed Previously Previewed Permission Form. GR-2 PARENT MEETING: Parents with Grade 2 children will meet in Fr. Haley Hall on Sunday, Jan. 27 for one of two meetings at 8:10 AM or 10:45 AM while their children attend classes. Coffee, tea and breakfast refreshments will be served. Those unable to attend can come on Mon., Jan. 28 at 7:00 PM in Fr. Haley Hall. GRADE 9 CONFIRMATION I: Grade 9 classes for Tuesday, January 15 and Thursday, January 17 are cancelled this week and will resume on Tuesday, January 29 and Thursday, January 31 from 6:30 to 8:30 PM in Fr. WINTER ADULT FORMATION PROGRAM: Journey along with Bishop Barron as he explores the lasting influence of St. Augustine and St. Benedict beginning on Tuesday, January 15 from 10:00 AM to Noon in RM 3 4. GRADE 2 FIRST COMMUNION MASSES 2019: Letters to families to select their child s First Communion Mass have been sent out. Please return your Mass selection cards by Friday, February 15. PROTECTING GODS CHILDREN (PGC) WORKSHOP: New volunteers 18 years of age and older serving in any capacity must complete a 2019 CORI, have a signed Code of Conduct and complete a PGC Workshop. Please check the RCAB website for PGC scheduled in nearby parishes CORI RENEWAL ALERT FOR ALL VOLUNTEER MINISTRIES: Ministry Leaders are to make sure that all their active volunteers (18 years and older) renew and complete a 2019 CORI. These forms must be completed each year. Forms are being sent out to all known volunteers via Constant Contact as an attachment as soon as we have the form from the archdiocese. If you have access to a printer, you can print out the CORI form, complete both sides, sign it, scan it in along with a copy of your license and send it back via it to: st.marysre1870@gmail.com. The other option is to stop by the R.E. office and complete the form and present a photo ID such as your license or passport. Your driver s license number needs to be on the completed form.
