4 THIRTY-THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME NOVEMBER 19, 2017 From the Pastor s Desk Dear St. Mary s Parishioners, This coming Thursday families all over America will come together to thank God for the blessings in their lives. We will gather around our family tables Thanksgiving Day, pray, and share a meal with those dear to us. In many ways the Thanksgiving Holiday meal reflects what we Catholics experience every Sunday. The word Eucharist means literally thanksgiving, and it is first and foremost a way for us to foster gratitude in our hearts for all that we have received. As we say in Eucharistic Prayer III, God is the one from whom all good things come. Gratitude in its purest form persists even when our prayers are not answered. To be able to recognize God s grace in the midst of loss and trial is perhaps the pinnacle of faith. I remember reading once a book that contained excerpts from the diary of a young husband whose wife was gravely ill. Doctors could not assure him that she would survive the night. In the diary, the young man expresses his profound faith in God and God s plans for their lives. He writes, She may die before morning. But I have been with her for 4 years.... There is no way I could feel cheated if I did not have her for another day. I never deserved her for a single moment. God knows that. And for all I know I too may die before morning. What I must do now is to accept the justice of death and the injustice of life... What did I do to deserve birth? It was purely a gift. And I am me, and that is a miracle. I have no right to a single moment..., yet I have had 32 years... But wait, the entry ends, I am being given another day. Another day to live and read and smell and walk in glory. I am alive for another day. And she is alive. It s a gift! Another gift. Thanks be to God! (Oldenburg) This Thanksgiving, may we all aspire to have the same attitude of gratitude that that young husband did. To count everything and anything as a gift from the One Who loves us even unto death and beyond. A very Happy Thanksgiving to you and yours. Reverend Mark J. Coiro Pastor P.S. As you know, the single most important collection each year in our parish the Grand Annual kicked off last weekend. Two parishioners had questions, so I answer them here in case anyone else wondered about them. Why does the Grand Annual not address the outdoor crumbling concrete steps to the lower church on the rectory side? Answer: We are aware of this, but as these are an emergency exit, never used, they have been put off to next year. We just don t have the funds now. When are we going to do something about the broken / constantly breaking church kneelers and the splitting / deteriorating linoleum floor beneath the church pews? Answer: Barring any major unexpected expenses, this will take up most of the 2018 Grand Annual next year. We are waiting for the first of three bids and will solicit two more, but this will be a very expensive project requiring the removal of all pews from the church. Hopefully this will be a project accomplished in the summer of We have now received permission to share with you that a dear St. Mary s Parishioner, Melissa Bachman, has been diagnosed with a very rare and very aggressive cancer - NUT midline carcinoma. Melissa is a faithful Communicant, and is known to many through her ministry at various times as a Religious Education Teacher, Youth Group Volunteer, and Special Needs Group Volunteer. Please pray for her healing, and please consider donating towards her health care costs at: May the blessings promised to the compassionate be yours in abundance!
