1 Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right. Honor your father and mother - which is the first commandment with a promise - so that it may go well with you and that you may enjoy long life on the earth. Fathers, do not exasperate your children; instead, bring them up in the training and instruction of the Lord. 2 ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JUNE 17, 2018 CARDINAL SEÁN P. O'MALLEY BORDER IMMIGRATION STATEMENT, WEDNESDAY, JUNE 13, 2018 "Immigration policy presents many challenges for any country. Developing sound immigration policy that respects the needs of a nation and those of the international community is a complex and challenging process. It always involves reconciling domestic priorities and global demands, strategy and tactics, objectives and means. At its core, immigration policy is about people, young and old, alone or in families, often fearful and abandoned. Immigration policy is a moral question that cannot be separated from decisions of what is right and wrong, of justice and injustice. It is about respecting and reverencing the dignity of the human person. In the year 2018, the moral challenge of immigration is mounting for the United States. On too many occasions our government has taken a posture and established policy which is in principle and in practice hostile to children and families who are fleeing violence, gangs, and poverty. The policies have included limiting the number of refugees and immigrants we are willing to welcome in our country, ending Temporary Protective Status for families who are here, and refusing to restore DACA protection for those who have been among us for all or most of their lives. In the face of today s global immigration crisis these choices fail to communicate a willingness to address the reality of widespread human suffering, and in many cases imminent danger, with compassion and care. The cumulative effect of these policy decisions has now reached a critical moral juncture: by the order of the U. S. government, individuals with children and families with children who are seeking asylum at the southern border of the United States now have their children separated from their parents. The intent of this policy is clear: to discourage those seeking asylum by severing the most sacred human bond of parent and child. Children are now being used as a deterrent against immigrants who are appealing to us for asylum in order to protect themselves and their families. As disturbing as this fact is, the narrative of this development makes clear the misguided moral logic of the policy. These individuals and families are fleeing documented violence, chaos and murder in the neighborhoods of Central America. The United States is now openly before the world using children as pawns to enforce a hostile immigration policy. This strategy is morally unacceptable and denies the clear danger weighing upon those seeking our assistance. As a Catholic bishop, I support political and legal authority. I have always taught respect for the civil law and will continue to do so. But, I cannot be silent when our country s immigration policy destroys families, traumatizes parents, and terrorizes children. The harmful and unjust policy of separating children from their parents must be ended." WELCOME KEVIN LYCZAK: St. Mary s is pleased to announce the hire of our new Parish Music Director, Mr. Kevin Lyczak. Kevin will begin ministry at our parish on Sunday, July 8. A native of Pennsylvania, Kevin received his B.M. in Organ Performance from Duquesne University, the Mary Pappert School of Music, in May of There he also received the André Marchal Award for Excellence in Performance (Duquesne University, May 2016). Kevin received his M.M. in Organ Performance at Indiana University, the Jacobs School of Music, in May of While there he did Private Improvisation Studies with Dr. Ann Labounsky ( ), Robert Nicholls (2017) and Vincent Carr (2017). He performed in improvisation master-classes for Dr. Justin Bischoff (2015), Dr. Martin Weltzel (2017) and Dr. Bill Porter (2017). Additionally, he ministered as the Accompanying Organist at the First Presbyterian Church in Evansville, IN including work with the Royal School of Church Music Program. WISDOM FROM THE SAINTS: I feel that our souls are moved to the ardor of piety by the sacred words more piously and powerfully when these words are sung than when they are not sung, and that all the affections of our soul in their variety have modes of their own in song and chant by which they are stirred up by an indescribable and secret sympathy. - Saint Augustine

4 St. Mary s 2018 Memorial Day Weekend Offertory came up $ 2, short. Please make the switch to Automatic Giving to get your parish through the Summer. The St. Mary s Finance Council asks all parishioners to please consider making the switch to Automatic Giving. This is by far the most convenient way for you to give, and the most helpful form of giving for your parish. Why? 1) Your bank sends your weekly parish support, in the amount you dictate, year-round. You don t need to remember offertory envelopes or checkbooks when you come to Mass. As with Mass envelopes, you will receive an annual tax statement for your giving. 2) Your parish is protected against long holiday weekends, summer vacations, severe weather and other times that you may physically be away but St. Mary s still must pay her bills. With Automatic Giving, you don t have to remember to make up missed offertory. 3) It s easy and your bank does it for free! Please see below to learn how. How to Set Up Your Summer Automatic Parish Giving: 1) Login to your online banking service (you will first need to be enrolled for this with your bank) 2) Go to Add Payee or similar function and enter/select: Payee Name: St. Mary s Parish Payee Address: 8 Church Street, Holliston, MA Phone: Account: none (since there is no account number your bank will mail a check) 3) Go to Set-up Recurring Bill Payment or similar function and enter/select: Choose Payee: St. Mary s Parish Amount: $ (reflects one s means and commitment) Payment Date: MM/DD/YYYY (payment will occur same day each month) Frequency: monthly (preferred) No. of Payments: 12 (or select open ended option, if available) Memo (Optional): offertory You are now set-up; your bank will automatically mail your offertory to St. Mary s, as instructed. Thank you for your faithful stewardship of your parish!
5 ELEVENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME JUNE 17, 2018 From the Pastor s Desk Dear Members of the St. Mary s Parish Family ~ Happy Father s Day! This weekend we remember in our prayers all fathers both those living and those who have gone to God. We thank God for the blessing these men have been in our lives, and remember also that by Baptism God has adopted us as His very own children, becoming forever our spiritual Father in whose home we hope one day to dwell. When Jesus disciples asked Him how to pray, Jesus told them to call God their Father. Many have said that this was the greatest compliment that Jesus ever paid to Joseph, his step-father. In fact our relationship with our earthly fathers has a profound impact on our view of God, our Heavenly Father. If a father is overly critical then his child grows to see God as judgmental. If a father is neglectful then the child concludes that God does not care. If, on the other hand, a dad is supportive, loving, and attentive then the child grows to see God as their compassionate and caring Heavenly Father. Together, a father and mother are meant to be a complimentary revelation of God s own love. God bless you! Rev. Mark J. Coiro UPCOMING MIDDLE SCHOOL YOUTH GROUP SUMMER EVENTS: Next Sunday, June 24 Whitewater Rafting, Maine: Be here at 6:30 AM, Depart Parish Center at 6:45 AM, return Monday, June 26, around 9-10 PM. PARISH WEBSITE VOLUNTEERS NEEDED: The Communications Committee is seeking a volunteer to publish regular updates to St. Mary's new website. Updates include, but are not limited to, publishing the weekly bulletin, monthly newsletter, and general content like new images and messages. This is a great opportunity to share your website development skills and make significant contributions to St. Mary's budding online presence! Please send inquiries to Kristen Haan (kristen.e.morris@gmail.com). KNIGHTS OF COLUMBUS TENTH ANNUAL CHARITY RAFFLE: One raffle ticket costs $5 and a book of five tickets sell for $20. Grand prize is $1000! Proceeds from this fund raiser have benefitted local charities such as the Holliston Pantry Shelf, Holliston Senior Center, as well as our St. Mary s Parish. Various Veterans charities such as Homes for our Troops, IPODS for Veterans, and Habitat for Humanity have been given donations. Tickets will be sold at downtown Holliston stores and grocery stores in Medway, Ashland, Bellingham and Milford. The Drawing is in June 20. Thanks for your support! WISDOM FROM THE SAINTS: I travel slowly, one step at a time, because I am carrying two big suitcases. One of them contains my sins and the other, which is much heavier, are the infinite merits of Jesus. When I reach Heaven I will open the suitcases and say to God: Eternal Father, now you can judge and to St Peter: Close the door- because I m staying. - St Josephine Bakhita (photo left)
6 SAINT MARY S RELIGIOUS EDUCATION PROGRAM JUNE 17, 2018 WISDOM FROM THE SAINTS: The more a person loves God, the more reason he has to hope in Him. This hope produces in the saints an unutterable peace, which they preserve even in adversity, because as the love God, and know how beautiful He is to those who love Him, they place all their confidence and find all their repose in Him alone. - St. Alphonsus di Liguori RELIGIOUS EDUCATION REGISTRATIONS ARE PAST DUE! IMPORTANT - FAMILY BASE RELIGIOUS EDUCATION FOR GRADES 3-5: Letters will be sent home to all families who have not scheduled an appointment for their child s assessment before June 28. In this inspiring talk, Devin Schadt draws upon the example of Saint Joseph to encourage fathers to understand and embrace their privileged role in the family and Church today. Pure Fatherhood by Devin Schadt. This presentation does a wonderful job of helping fathers hear Joseph.
