1 Prayer for Labor Day God of love and justice, we come to You this Labor Day asking for Your presence and guidance. You have asked us to walk with our brothers and sisters and told us there are no strangers among us. Yet, we still turn against You and the law You have given us to love one another as we love ourselves. As the Psalm says, we know that good will comes to those who are generous and lend freely, and to those who conduct their affairs with justice. However, we have sometimes failed to be generous with our time and resources, and have neglected opportunities to treat others with human dignity. God, as we remember those who are struggling and organizing for a living wage, healthcare, and human dignity in their workplaces, remind us this Labor Day that You have called us to walk in solidarity with our brothers and sisters, as we conduct our affairs with love and justice. Amen. St. Mary s Parish Mass Schedule: Monday through Saturday 9:00 AM Saturday Vigils 5:00 PM 7:30 PM Sunday 7:30 AM 9:30 AM Family Mass (C.L.O.W. Sept. Any adult parishioner who attends Mass weekly at St. Mary s, and who is living a life in harmony with the moral teachings of the Catholic faith, may volunteer to be part of this joyful ministry. CORI & VIRTUS requirements apply. Let us be specially mindful of the plight of the poor and our responsibility to them. In his Encylical Rerum Novarum, Pope Leo XIII offered this beautiful reminder: No one is commanded to distribute to others that which is required for his own needs and those of his household. But, when what necessity demands has been supplied, it becomes a duty to give to the indigent out of what remains over. "Of that which remaineth, give alms." It is a duty of Christian charity [given by] Christ the true God, who in many ways urges on His followers the practice of almsgiving "It is more blessed to give than to receive"; and who will count a kindness done or refused to the poor as done or refused to Himself - "As long as you did it to one of My least brethren you did it to Me." To sum up, then: Whoever has received from the divine bounty a large share of temporal blessings, whether they be external and material, or gifts of the mind, has received them for the purpose of using them for the perfecting of his own nature, and, at the same time, that he may employ them, as the steward of God's providence, for the benefit of others. (RN art. 22) WISDOM FROM THE SAINTS: Even a tiny flame lifts the heavy lid of night. How much more light will you make, all together, if you bond as one in the communion of the Church! If you love Jesus, love the Church! Do not be discouraged by the sins and failings of some of her members. The harm done by some priests and religious to the young and vulnerable fills us all with a deep sense of sadness and shame. But think of the vast majority of dedicated and generous priests and religious whose only wish is to serve and do good! There are many priests, seminarians and consecrated persons here today; be close to them and support them! And if, in the depths of your hearts, you feel the same call to the priesthood or consecrated life, do not be afraid to follow Christ on the royal road of the Cross! At difficult moments in the Church's life, the pursuit of holiness becomes even more urgent. And holiness is not a question of age; it is a matter of living in the Holy Spirit, just as Kateri Tekakwitha did here in America and so many other young people have done. You are young, and the Pope is old, 82 or 83 years of life is not the same as 22 or 23. But the Pope still fully identifies with your hopes and aspirations. Although I have lived through much darkness, under harsh totalitarian regimes, I have seen enough evidence to be unshakably convinced that no difficulty, no fear is so great that it can completely suffocate the hope that springs eternal in the hearts of the young. You are our hope, the young are our hope. Do not let that hope die! Stake your lives on it! We are not the sum of our weaknesses and failures; we are the sum of the Father's love for us and our real capacity to become the image of his Son. - Pope Saint John Paul II, World Youth Day Mass, Toronto, July 28, 2002

4 ST. MARY S MINISTRY FAIR WEEKEND IS NEXT WEEKEND SEPTEMBER 9: Find out about opportunities to serve and participate in the life of our parish. There will be speakers at all the Masses and a chance to meet people involved in the various ministries after the Sunday 9:30 AM Mass. You can sign up to be part of a ministry, too. Refreshments (DJ&C) will be available! Let s celebrate our call as individuals and as a parish community to discipleship and service. CHILDREN S LITURGY OF THE WORD (CLOW): As we say goodbye to the warm summer and prepare to head into the cooler fall season, I encourage you to pray about joining the CLOW team this year! The Children s Liturgy of the Word is a format that presents the biblical teachings of our Catholic faith to the children of our parish in a friendly, interactive and fun setting. The requirements are that you are a practicing Catholic, attending Mass and living out your faith in daily life. A teaching background while helpful is by no means necessary. The lessons are prepared for you ahead of time, and props and posters are provided for you. This is a program that is vital to our parish and not only enriches the faith of the children, but also the adult leaders who present the lessons. CORI submission and VIRTUS apply, and will be provided for you. We have some fabulous leaders, about 5 regular ones, but realistically should have double that number. We also welcome teen Leaders 15 and over who are practicing Catholics. Won t you please consider joining us? The first CLOW of the season will take place on September 16. An instructional meeting for new and returning leaders will take place on September 23 from 10:45-11:45 AM in the Lower Church. You can reach me at or OLORDYIMFORTY@AOL.COM. - Pat Campo- LeBlanc/CLOW Coordinator CLOW READERS: St. Mary s is in need of a few young people willing to become youth lectors at the 9:30 AM CLOW Masses. The St. Mary s youth lector program allows youths in 7 th Grade or higher to proclaim the Word of God at Mass and at other liturgical celebrations. Candidates must attend church regularly and be willing to spend time during the week before to practice their reading skills. People are scheduled for one Sunday per month. If interested please Ron Turcotte at ronturcotte2@gmail.com to arrange for a short training session. TIMMY CAKE FUNDRAISER: Representatives of The Timothy O'Connell Foundation will be selling Tim's favorite chocolate cake after each Mass on September 8 and 9. Donation is $60. All proceeds from the sales of these cakes will go to the Foundation's charitable mission, including its Scholarship Fund. The Timothy O Connell Foundation is a 501(c) (3) not-for-profit organization, established in honor and loving memory of Timothy O'Connell, a St. Mary's parishioner. Since its inception in 2008, the Foundation has granted nearly $600,000 in gifts to worthy cancer-related causes, and has awarded more than $72,000 in scholarships to Holliston students pursuing health-related fields of study. Learn more about the Foundation's other gifting programs and goals at Any questions please joanneoconnell@comcast.net. Thank you!

5 SEASON OF CREATION: September 1, the World Day of Prayer for Creation, marks the beginning of what is called the Season of Creation. This Season extends from September 1 until October 4, the feast day of St. Francis of Assisi, Catholics patron saint of the environment and those who promote ecology. This year, representatives of a number of Christian churches issued a joint statement about the Season of Creation. The statement reads, in part: During the Season of Creation, we join together to rejoice in the good gift of creation and reflect on how we care for it As the environmental crisis deepens, we Christians are urgently called to witness to our faith by taking bold action to preserve the gift we share. Visit for more information about the Season of Creation and to find the full text of the letter from our faith leaders. RCIA: The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults, is for anyone interested in exploring the Catholic faith. This includes Christians of other faiths, non-baptized persons, persons Baptized Catholic but who never received their First Communion, Confirmation or both. The first part of RCIA is called Inquiry, an opportunity to learn about the faith and ask questions in an informal and supportive setting. At a certain point, individuals then decide if they wish to continue RCIA in preparation for receiving their Sacraments of Initiation at the great Easter Vigil. RCIA meets roughly twice a month with the schedule tailored to the needs of each year s candidate group. Catholic spouses or fiancés are more than welcome to attend, often coming as a couple. Those over eighteen years old who might be interested in RCIA Inquiry, should call Those under eighteen should call Fran at Do you have a friend or family member who might be interested in the faith? This is the time to invite and welcome them to RCIA! From the Pastor s Desk Dear Members of the St. Mary s Parish Family: Many thanks to all who helped the parish run smoothly while I was out of the country these past few weeks. Special thanks to our secretary Mary Beth Harris, and also to Seminarian Alwin Chinappan who both organized things so well for Fr. Peter last weekend. Even while travelling away it was impossible to miss the ongoing scandal and justifiable outrage concerning the failure of Church leaders in their mishandling of past sex abuse cases. Like you I have been sickened by the details and disgusted by the seeming inability to address these matters rightly and move forward in a positive and healing way. As we correctly demand justice and accountability from the Church s leadership, this is perhaps a good time to consider what we all can do right here in our own parish to make sure our values are lived out with rigorous integrity especially in the area of child safety. Do you want to make a difference? Here s what you can do right now: 1) Volunteer to be a Religious Education Safety Monitor. They make rounds to check on classes in session and call to alert parents if a student did not show up for class. Monitors are a key part of our parish safety plan. 2) Teach a Religious Education Class or volunteer in Youth Ministry. Are you the kind of faithful and moral person that you want the children of our parish instructed and led by? Then be that gift to our young people. 3) Take the VIRTUS Protecting God s Children Class. You will learn about the problem of abuse, the best safety practices, the warning signs, and the legal reporting requirements. 4) If you are a parish volunteer, get in your annual CORI (criminal background check) as soon as it is requested, knowing that having everyone do this each year provides essential screening to protect our kids. There is no question that the problem of abuse can seem overwhelming. Clearly some Church leadership has continued to stumble and make mistakes in setting things right. But WE are the Catholic Church right here and now in Holliston. We can all find ways to assure that the children of our own beautiful parish grow up in the innocence and safety that they deserve. We can all do our part to make certain our young people experience the holiness, truth and beauty that is the real face and vocation of Christ s Church. God bless you. Rev. Mark J. Coiro
