3 Saint Mary s Parish 8 Church St. ~ Holliston, MA ~ ~ (508) Dear Members of the St. Mary s Parish Family, October 29, th Sunday in Ordinary Time This coming Wednesday, November 1, is a Holy Day of Obligation. Basically, a Holy Day is a Feast of the Church which is so important that it carries the same obligation to attend Mass that every Sunday does. Here in the United States, there are only six such days in the entire year. The Feast of Mary, Mother of God Jan. 1. The Ascension of Jesus into heaven the date changes, but is always celebrated 40 days after Easter Sunday. The Assumption of Mary into heaven August 15. The Feast of the Immaculate Conception Dec. 8. The Feast of Christmas Dec. 25. And finally, The Feast of All Saints Nov. 1, the Holy Day we will celebrate together this coming Wednesday. In certain years, Holy Days may fall on a Sunday in which case they replace the regular Sunday Mass. That s what happened with Christmas last year. But most of the time Holy Days fall on weekdays, and Catholics are then obliged (and privileged), to attend Mass on that weekday giving that day the same spiritual importance as the Sabbath. As a child, I remember being very impressed by Holy Days. My parents were both busy, hardworking people. But no matter how tired my parents were, or how busy my brother and two sisters and I were with school or other activities when a Holy Day of Obligation came, they always made sure the whole family got to Mass. It wasn t always the same Mass, given our crazy schedules. But we d all be there eventually, no matter what. And that taught me something. It taught me that my faith, and my worship of God, is not something restricted to Sundays. But that God should take priority in my life at any time, and every time. In a sense, our observance of Holy Days of Obligation reminds us that every day is a holy day that every day our lives should be an offering to God. I wouldn t be surprised if that particular lesson played a role in my finding my vocation as a priest. One other thing I learned from Holy Days of Obligation is that some things are just too important not to celebrate. And this Wednesday s Holy Day the Feast of All Saints is a good example. First of all, Wednesday is the day we will celebrate, and ask the prayers of, all the saints of God. The scriptures tell us that there are only two things with God in heaven angels and saints. You and I will never become angels, they are an entirely different order of creation from us, beings of pure spirit with God from the beginning. Which means that if you have a departed loved one that you believe is already with God maybe a grandparent, or another dear one that you talk to and that you believe hears your prayers and is praying for you to God then really you think your departed loved one is a saint. And this Wednesday, is your loved one s Feast day. The word saint means simply, Holy. There are some saints that have been revealed to us by God and declared as saints by the Church like St Thérèse of Lisieux., whose statue graces a transept of our church. But most of the men, women and children who through the centuries have died in a state of grace and are now saints with God in heaven their names are known only to God. And so each year we have this Feast of All the Saints. A day that is also important because it reminds us that sainthood is our goal and calling in life! If you want to be in heaven one day, then you want to be a saint - someone who served God well by a holy life that was a source of help and love and mercy and blessing to other people. There is one final reason that here in America we need to be extra careful to keep holy the Feast of All Saints. And that is because of the popularity of what is now a very secular celebration the night before Halloween. Now don t get me wrong, I like Halloween. If you avoid the occult aspects of it, it can be a lot of fun. As usual, the Church Street door of the rectory will be decorated on October 31, and Loki and I will be giving out candy and religious stickers to all the Trick or Treaters. But we should remember that Halloween - actually stands for ALL Hallow s Eve meaning the EVE of All Hallows - the Eve of All Saints. And what message would we be sending if our kids see us go all out for Halloween decorations, candy, costumes, tons of time and effort only to do nothing to honor the Saints of God the very next day? All the Saints of God. The ones we are called to imitate. And whose joyful company we hope to share when our earthly journey is complete. God bless you. Rev. Mark J. Coiro Pastor
