32 The Significance of Sikh Youth Camps The Gurduara, a Sikh Religious institution, is created to promote and instill the principles of the Sikh faith amongst the followers. It also acts as a training ground for the young and upcoming generations, in particular the young children. When the Sikh Guru Sahibs started the institution of Dharamshala (later known as Gurduaras), they were not merely a place to worship. Such institutions already existed since the history of mankind, where follower prayed to various deities and idols. With the rejection of idols and various deities, and worship of the Only True Lord, the Gurduara was setup for Sikhs to realize, praise and meditate on God s name. Initially, Guru Sahibs setup the Manji System within the Dharamshalas to promote Sikhi and God s name, but as Sikhism evolved from the First to the Tenth Nanak, these institutions were also used to solve the community s social and communal problems. They were used as Forts to defend the weak and the principles of Truth and above all, they were used as training grounds to create the fine balance of Miri & Piri, Saint & Soldier, and Degh & Tegh which would define the uniqueness of Sikhi. After the Tenth Nanak, Guru Gobind Singh ji passed on the JYOT into Guru Granth and Guru Panth, the Gurduara because the House were Guru Granth Sahib resides, where the Sikhs gather to read and sing the Baani, welcome people of all backgrounds and serve langar without discrimination. With the spread of Sikhi to countries out of India, and limited exposure of the youth to the Sikh Culture and activities, various Sikhs leaders realized the importance of creating events and camps to promote and teach the basic concepts of Sikhi to the youth to ensure the continuation of Sikhi. As a child, I had significant exposure to Sikh culture primarily by regularly attending Gurduaras and visiting Panjab on a regular basis. Moreover, I cannot forget the great influence of sangat who made sure I did not stray away from this path. The biggest impact of course, came from my parents. They made me attend almost every Keertan program (whether it was 5am or 8pm) regardless if I wanted to or not. They made me learn Gurmukhi and Baani, even if I had time for it or not. For my College, I moved to the US (early 90 s) and while attending Gurduaras, I quickly realized how blessed I was to have parents who built a good foundation of Sikhi in me. 31

33 Not only did I continue with Seva in the Gurduaras, but I was amongst the very few teenagers who could read/write Gurmukhi, do nitnem and path from Guru Granth Sahib ji as well we perform the various activities involved in a Gurduara such as Prakash and Sukhasan of Guru Granth Sahib ji, Ardas, Parshaad Seva etc. During my college years, I also had the opportunity to attend various Sikh Retreats, where I met many more youth who were in a similar situation as I, and were willing to expand our knowledge of Sikhi. One of the most important lessons I learnt through these retreats was to lead and share the knowledge and groom the upcoming generations in a way, that they are proud to be Sikh. A Sikh child should not consider being a Sikh as a burden, but see it as an opportunity to stand out and prove him/herself as the best of the best. While living in Michigan, I have again been blessed with great Sangat of Madison Heights Gurduara, who have created a great Panjabi / Gurmat Class system to teach Panjabi and Sikh history to the youth. At the same time, I have been blessed with the Seva of not only volunteering with these classes, but also to coordinate the Youth Gurmat Day Camp. This camp was started four years ago with about 30 children, and now has grown to double the size. The Camp is not designed to compete against the Panjabi / Gurmat classes, but instead to complement it. Activities at the camp are meant to create an atmosphere of brotherhood amongst the Sikh youth all while learning about our History, Culture and Philosophy. In addition to learning activities, field trips are organized (Bowling, CJ Barrymore s) to show, that you can still be a Sikh and have fun. Above all, the goal of the camp is to inspire the youth to become the best Sikhs and attain success in their education, work and personal life. Every Sikh child should be proud of their heritage, and not fear the possibility of being harassed for being different. Guru Sahib intended us to be standing out one in Sava Lakh, so why should we be afraid and back out? In the end, I would like to say thanks for all volunteers who have helped in the camp during the past years, and hope they will continue in the future. All the youth, should wake up everyday, look their selves in the mirror and see the image of Guru Sahib in themselves, do ardas to Vaheguru to make them mentally strong to face all the challenges and be successful in all tasks, and be content with HIS will. -Jasvir Singh 32
