Guru Nanak Dev Jee and the Mool Mantar 1. Guru Nanak Dev Jee worked as a store keeper in Sultanpur Lodhi. His daily routine would be to wake up in the early hours of the morning and bathe in the River Bein. After their bath, they would spend many hours praying and meditating under a tree. Guru Jee would then go to work and even whilst working their focus would be on Vaheguru. 2. In the evenings Guru Jee would sit with the sangat and discuss the virtues of God. 3. One morning Guru Nanak Dev Jee went to bathe in the river as normal. Bhai Mardana Jee always accompanied Guru Sahib and would wait for them to return after their bath. A few hours passed and this time Guru Jee did not return. Bhai Mardana Jee called out for Guru Jee but their was no reply. 4. Bhai Mardana Jee went back to the village and told the villagers about what had happened. The Newab of Sultanpur loved Guru Jee dearly and sent out a search party to look for Him. Guru Jee was nowhere to be found. 5. Everyone gave up hope and thought that Guru Nanak Dev Jee had drowned. Bibi Nanaki Jee (Guru Nanak Dev Jee s elder sister) had complete faith in her brother and refused to believe that He had drowned. She recognised that He was the light that had come to guide people on to the true path and save the world. 6. After three days, Guru Nanak Dev Jee appeared from the river with a heavenly glow about them. Everyone was very happy to see Guru Jee. 7. Guru Nanak Dev Jee spent the three days with Vaheguru. During this time Guru Jee asked Vaheguru how to explain God and His qualities to the people of the world. Vaheguroo replied with the Mool Mantar.

River Bein Sakhi (story)

River Bein Sakhi continued At last, after three days, Guru Nanak appeared. He was sitting outside on the village common. Everybody was surprised and people ran to see him. Nanak sat alone. He was very quiet. Nanak's wife, his parents and friends were very happy. Their eyes were wet with tears of joy. Soon there was a big crowd of people. An old man came out and asked, "Where have you been all these days, Nanak?" "Nowhere. Here. I was with God. Now I have to do a lot of work," said Guru Nanak. "A lot of work! For whom? For the Hindus or the Muslims?" asked the man. "For none of them. There is no Hindu and no Muslim," replied Nanak. "What! No Hindu and no Musalman (Muslim)? Aren't we Muslims? We say our Namaz (Prayer) five time a day don't we?" asked the old man angrily. "I am afraid you are wrong. You think yourselves as Hindus and Muslims first and last. You forget that you are men first and something else. We are the sons of the one GOD. We are all brothers. So there is no Hindu and no Muslim," said Nanak. "If you think so, are you ready to join us for prayer in the Mosque?" asked the man. "Yes, gladly. I am always ready to pray to God," replied Nanak. So they went to the Mosque and all the people went with them. In the mosque Daulat Khan, the chief of Sultanpur was also present. He was happy to see Nanak there and thought that Nanak had become a Muslim. The prayer started. All bowed and said words of prayer. But Nanak stood silent and only watched what they were doing. After the prayer, Daulat Khan asked Nanak angrily, "Why did you not follow us in the prayer? You were simply standing and doing nothing." "Ah, certainly I wanted to join the prayer but I found nobody in the mosque here," said Nanak. "No, you are lying. Couldn't you see the crowd of people here?" said Daulat Khan. "Certainly your bodies were here but your minds were far, far away. You were buying horses in Arabia far away from this prayer carpet. How then could I join you?" said Nanak with a smile. Daulat Khan was surprised that Nanak could know what he was thinking at the time of prayer. Guru Nanak said, "Words alone do not make a prayer. A prayer should come right from the heart. I am always ready to join such a prayer." At this Daulat Khan bowed before the Guru and promised to offer his prayers from the heart. All the people there accepted the Guru's way.

GURU GRANTH SAHIB 294 (the nature of God ~ what is God like?) In the forests, fields and mountains, He is the Supreme Lord God. As He orders, so do His creatures act. He permeates the winds and the waters. He is pervading in the four corners and in the ten directions. Without Him, there is no place at all. By Guru's Grace, O Nanak, peace is obtained. Read this through and See Him in the Vedas, the Puraanas and the Simritees. annotate this passage. In the moon, the sun and the stars, He is the One. The Bani of God's Word is spoken by everyone. What does it tell us He Himself is unwavering - He never wavers. about God? With absolute power, He plays His play. His value cannot be estimated; His virtues are invaluable. In all light, is His Light. The Lord and Master supports the weave of the fabric of the universe. The entire creation came from God. As it pleases Him, He creates the expanse. As it pleases Him, He becomes the One and Only again. His powers are so numerous, they cannot be known. As it pleases Him, He merges us into Himself again. Who is near, and who is far away? He Himself is Himself pervading everywhere.

GURU GRANTH SAHIB 921 (What is God s relationship with human life?) Guru Granth Sahib: 921 He Himself is the love, and He Himself is the embrace; the Gurmukh (Godly people) contemplates (think about) Him forever. Says Nanak, why forget such a Great Giver from the mind? The Lord Himself is your mother, and He Himself is your father; He created the created beings, and revealed the world to them. Read this through and annotate this passage. What does it tell us about God and his relationship with us? The Punjabi word for a personal God is SAGUNA.

What is the Sikh view of God? (5 marks) Try and use KEY WORDS / phrases either in Punjabi or English! MAX WRITING TIME: 5 mins (Half side of A4 minimum!)
