2 The significance of Symbols-Panj Kakar FIVE K s I. Kachha: ensures agility and briskness. It is a mark of perpetual readiness. It also stands for chastity and implies that one is in control of the five vices. II. Kara: The infiniteness of Waheguru and that his presence is all around and throughout the universe. It indicates that one is a devotee of the Guru. It reminds a Sikh that Guru is with him/ her all through his life. III. Kirpan: is an emblem of power and courage. It emphasises that a sword in the hands of the saint does good while in the hands of the soldier will harm and destroy. It is to be used when other means have been exhausted. IV. Kesh: is the stamp of the Tenth Gurur and signifies that the individual is the child of the Guru and belongs to Waheguru. V. Kanga: is necessary to keep the hair clean and in shape. The Kanga reminds the Sikh that as he cleans his hair he must also purify his heart by meditating on NAM and taking part in Sat Sangat Contents List No Content Page no 1 Mool Mantar 2 2 School Prayers 3 3 Ardaas 5 4 Story for children 9 5 School Syllabus 11 6 Sikh Gurus 12 7 Definition of a SIKH 13 8 PANJ Piare 13 9 Life of a Sikh Panj Kakar (FIVE K s) 16 Guru Gobind Singh Sahib says The Khalsa is my special form ; I live in the embodiment of the Khalsa. The Khalsa is a part and parcel of my body ; The Khalsa is my very soul.
3 Mool Mantar Ek onkar siq nwm krqw purku Sat Naam Karta Purkh inrbau inrvyr Nirbhau Nirvair Akwl murq AjUnI sybm Akaal Moorat Ajooni Saibhang gurprswid Gurparsaad ]jpu] Jap Awid scu jugwid scu] hy BI Aad Sach Jugaad Suach Hai Bi scu nwnk hosi BI scu] ] Sach Nanak Hosi Bhi Sach]1] To learn to be persistent and understand that frustration is part of growing up and becoming a mature person. Enabling us to recognise that life can be difficult but remembering that Guru is with and within us and his blessing and strength will enable the obstacles to be overcome. Man too jot saroop haii apna mool pachaan To be humble and display humility in all we do so that the seeds of ego and me can be contained to allow growth of the spiritual presence of Waheguru. Kabir jit marnae tey jag darey mere man anand; marnae tey he paaya puran pramanand. Remebering in whatever we do that Waheguru is the supreme Lord and our presence is only a temporary blip in his universe. No one will stay forever. To acknowledge that being alone against adversity is difficult but recognise that with Waheguru s blessing and grace one can gain the strength and belief to fight against injustice. Laekha koi naa pochai je har bakshanda It seems that a Sikh needs to recognise that at times, they might have to be alone and know, that being, against the crowd and to follow a different path and sing to a different tune in itself is difficult. To stay on the path of just and righteousness will mean that one would be visible and know that differences are difficult to be tolerated. Through all this to know that Guru is ang sang and gain that strength, is to be Sikh. Living this life and know that the Khalsa belongs to Waheguru and that the Sikh will embrace the will of Waheguru whatever the circumstances are; and to follow in the enlightened footsteps of those Sikhs before us who have become part of the eternal. Panch parvaan panch pardhaan; panche paaven dargeh maan
4 <> siqgur prswid [[ A life being a SIKH Aspiration of a Sikh is to attain oneness with Waheguru and yet retain the qualities that make it possible to live a life as a human. Guru Ji reminds us that the human form is part of the eternal soul and one day the journey will be complete, for this to happen there is a path, that one needs to follow. Jini naam dhiaiya; gaye masakat ghaal. Naanak te mukh ujile; keti chhuti naal The path laid down by the Guru emboldens the Sikh to develop their personal life such that it helps them to be: Empathetic, kind and be able to put self in another s shoes so that one does not become judgemental but recognises that we are all fallible and will make mistakes. Dhaul daharam daya ka puut; santhok thaap rakayae jin soot To be moral can make, a person narrow and closed to new experiences and ideas leading us to believe that no one can be good enough and yet Guru Ji reminds us that for us to be moral we need to recognise the higher authority that is universal. And that we must be just and see the seed of the creator in all. Sab mein jot; jot hai soye Morality is not about the symbols but about a life lived in Waheguru s presence.
