Overview by the Vice President Waheguru Ji Ka Khalsa, Waheguru Ji Ki Fateh My sincere gratitude is due to the editors of this newsletter for giving me an opportunity to convey a short message to our devoted Sadh Sangat Ji. I wish to congratulate the president; Nirwer Singh Nandhra, Secretary; Narinderjit Singh Ubhi, Treasurer; Inderjit Singh Rajbans and all the members of the Management Committee who have taken up sewa in this year, 2009/10. All the members have commenced this term with a lot of enthusiasm and I pray to Waheguru Ji to keep their morals high and give them the strength to work even harder. In addition to the regular management of the Sabha activities we will sincerely endeavour to complete the outstanding projects in the shortest possible time. We hope to complete the ongoing building project including the external works before the end of this year and perform the opening ceremony before Vaisakhi We would like to humbly request all members of the Sadh Sangat to participate and contribute not just with money but Kar Sewa towards achieving this goal. These goals can only be achieved by your blessings and continued support. Punjabi classes are going extremely well with the children enjoying the Chips and Beans afterwards. I would request all eligible children to join and take advantage of the excellent service being provided by the extremely dedicated teachers and mothers. Please coordinate with the teachers for classes after the summer school holidays. I humbly request all those who read this message to attend the regular Diwans with their families. Our local Kirtan Jathas and the children s programmes are always very enjoyable. The pin drop silence during Giani Ji s recitation of Kirtan and Katha in very simple language is a testimony to the Sangat s liking and enjoyment. The langar after the Diwans is very nice too! A big thank you to the kitchen Sewadars. Best wishes, Mr Mohinder Singh Munde - Vice President Page 3

Timetable of Regular Gurudwara Sahib Events Sunday Morning Divan: The main divan takes place every Sunday morning from 9.30am till 12.45pm. The schedule for the morning is as follows: 9.30am Kirtan of Sri Assa Di Var 10.30am Kirtan Ardas followed by Guru Ka Langar Simran: Come and join members of the Sadh Sangat in chanting the name of the Almighty Waheguru on Saturday mornings between 7am and 8am. Ladies Satsang: Takes place on the first Saturday of each month from 2pm till 4pm. Sangrand: There is an evening divan from 6.30pm till 8pm to celebrate the beginning of the new month in accordance with the Nanakshahee calendar. Punjabi Class: Takes place Monday evening at 6pm for one hour, followed by a chips and beans dinner! Kirtan Class: Harmonium and Tabla teaching takes place Monday evening from 7pm till 8.00pm. Lunch Club: Takes place each Wednesday. The concept of Lunch club is to get elderly people out of their homes and to facilitate sharing of social values amongst each other through the provision of a luncheon. Kirtan takes place from 11.00am to 11.30am and then yoga from am to 12.30pm. Luncheon is provided between 12:30 and 1:00 pm. Officers of Statutory bodies are invited to the Gurudwara on a regular basis to provide related information such as Police assistance, Housing concerns, Medical etc. Lunch Club arranges outings for their members regularly. Building Progress Update As reported in the previous issue, the two main items that needed to be addressed as a matter of urgency were the kitchen and the disabled wc. Hopefully, you will have noticed that work has commenced on both these projects. Page 4

Kitchen Facilities: The Kitchen is being fitted out with the installation of an extractor canopy and purpose made burners and a hot plate. The walls are being clad in stainless steel sheeting for hygienic, ease of cleaning and aesthetic reasons. These appliances require a higher volume supply of gas, which the existing service cannot provide, as it was primarily a domestic supply serving the building prior to its conversion to a Gurudwara. The cost for upgrading the existing supply would not have been economically viable as it involved laying approximately 300m of a new gas main from the adjoining industrial estate. Various options were therefore considered and the most economic solution was to install Calor gas tanks to meet the increased demand. These have been installed to the rear of the kitchen in the car park, which I am sure you will all have noticed. Hopefully, in the future when the land on the opposite side of Watling Street is developed, we will be able to connect to the new proposed gas main along Watling Street at a more reasonable cost. It is anticipated that these works will be completed in July. Disabled Toilet: Works to the disabled wc are also progressing, albeit at a slow pace. This is going to be stepped up, and again we are hoping to have this complete sometime in July. Security: We had a breach of security back in March, when intruders broke into the premises and stole the speakers from the dining hall. In order to secure the premises, an alarm system combined with CCTV cameras has been installed and is now fully operational. In addition, we are liaising with the Kiln Farm Sports Club next door to agree the installation of a gate at the entrance. Car Park: Following the completion of these items, the next item on the agenda is the car park and paving around the buildings. The layout, surfacing, lighting and drainage plans are currently being drawn up and we will be going out for quotations for these works shortly. The Committee is currently sourcing the funding for these works, and if things go according to plan, then it is very likely that these works will be implemented before the end of the year. We would like to take this opportunity to thank members of the Sangat and the Committee who have helped with the building works. As is usual with all Community led projects, there is always a shortage of volunteers and hence anyone who feels that he or she can help is most welcome. Manjit Singh Virdee Page 5

Kirtan Events at Gurudwara Sahib Bhai Jatinder Singh Chandigar Wale did Kirtan at Gurudwara Sahib in April. Mr Charandip Singh and Mrs Amrat Kaur Sahmbi held a service to celebrate the 21 st birthday of their son, Rai-Bahadur Singh Sahmbi. It was a memorable day enjoyed by many. The Kirtan was great and it was very encouraging to receive such positive feedback from friends and relatives of the family who attended the celebration. Bhai Jatinder Singh and his jatha are well versed in numerous Kirtan styles and were evident for all to see on the day. They have appeared a number of times on the Sikh Channel too! In May, the Sadh Sangat was treated to a classical spectacular! Mr Jagdeep Singh Mudhan who teaches tabla at the Gurudwara on Monday evenings, arranged for his teacher, Ustad Fayyaz Khan to enlighten the congregation with a tabla demonstration. Ustad Fayyaz Khan was initiated into music by Ustad Nazir Khan, a practitioner of the Delhi tabla style. Ustad Fayyaz Khan accompanied by Jagdeep Singh Mudhan (Harmonium), Duncan (Tabla) and Mehram Singh (Sarangi). Page 6

A former staff artiste of All India Radio, Ustad Fayyaz Khan has accompanied almost all the great artistes of Indian music, including Ustad Amir Khan, Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, Pandit Ravi Shankar, Ustad Ali Akbar Khan, Mallikarjun Mansur, Omkarnath Thakur, Amjad Ali Khan, Hariprasad Chaurasia and Shivkumar Sharma. Mehram Singh then sang a shabad in Raag Bhairavi to conclude the programme. For all you musical enthusiasts: Ustad Fayyaz Khan will be giving a Tabla Workshop on Monday 20 th July from 19:00 at Gurudwara Sahib Sant Anoop Singh Ji Una Sahib Wale brought their concept of Seva and Simran in the form of Bhai Ghanaiya s mission to serve all regardless of faith, caste or colour. Sant Anoop Singh Ji has toured many countries spreading the teachings of Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The Red Cross dedicated their Blood Donor day this year to the service given by Bhai Ghanaiya to the wounded during the battles at the time of Guru Gobind Singh Ji. Many Sikh warriors had complained to Guru Gobind Singh Ji that Bhai Ghanaiya as a Sikh was also helping the wounded enemy during the battles by providing water and medical aid. When asked why are you helping the Moghuls? Bhai Ghanaiya replied that he saw God in everyone and it was his duty to serve all. Guru Gobind Singh Ji blessed Bhai Ghaniya for his love of God in all mankind and provided him with endless medical supplies. The dedication was also backed by the World Health Organisation and the National Health Service. There is a shortage of blood donors in the Asian community and Sant Anoop Singh and his Jatha travelled the UK to encourage Page 7

the Sikhs to become blood donors too. Their target was to register 5000 donors over the month. A big thank you to all those who signed up on the day. Gurudwara Recycling - Helping Preserve the Environment We hear about Global warming issues every day. One of the major reasons for Global Warming is that we keep using resources that the earth has given us. If we recycle some of these, then we would not cut as many trees, we would not use as much energy to create new articles such as cans, bottles etc. We would also reduce polluting gases such as CO2, Methane. In the Guru Granth sahib it is written The Lord infused his light into the dust, and created the world, the universe. The sky, the earth, the trees, and the water- all are the creation of the Lord //1// ANG 723 SGGS As Sikhs we should play our part to help keeping the earth in good health giving our future generations a better life to live, thus recycling should be something we implement into our life to help keep the earth in a clean respectable state. At the Gurudwara Sahib we want the Sadh Sangat to help us recycle as much as possible. We have put a pink bin in the Langar hall which is to be used for all recyclable materials such as paper, milk bottles, cans, plastic and glass bottles. Please do not use this for food waste. We would appreciate your efforts in helping us contribute to make the world a cleaner, healthier place for our coming generations. Ravinderpal S Mahoon - Bhandari (Kitchen Supervisor). 9 Health Watch - Appendicitis What is it? Appendicitis is a swelling (inflammation) of the appendix. The appendix is a small pouch that is connected to your colon and is located in the lower right side of your abdomen (stomach).the reason we have an appendix is unclear. The biologist Charles Darwin thought that the appendix may be a by-product of evolution; something that early humans needed to help digest plants. However, recent research has suggested that the appendix may provide a home to 'friendly bacteria' that aid digestion and help fight infection. It is thought that the most common causes of appendicitis are infection and obstruction. However, in many cases there is no obvious cause. Obstructions can sometimes occur when a hard piece of stool (faeces) gets trapped in the appendix. Both infection and obstruction cause the appendix to become filled with bacteria that produce pus. The pus causes the appendix to swell and, if left untreated, the appendix can burst (perforate). Appendicitis is a common condition. In the UK, 7% of people will experience appendicitis at some point in their life. The condition is more common in men than in women, and normally occurs in those between years of age. Appendicitis is regarded as a medical emergency because a ruptured appendix can lead to potentially serious or even fatal complications, such as blood poisoning (sepsis). However, as a result of advances in diagnostic and surgical techniques, deaths from appendicitis are very rare. Appendicitis can be treated by surgically removing the appendix (appendectomy). Appendectomies are one of the most commonly performed emergency surgical procedures, and their success rate is excellent. Living without an appendix will cause you no related problems. Although there is no guaranteed way to prevent appendicitis, studies have shown that it is less common among people who eat a high-fibre diet. Page 9

Here s An Idea - How About A Sikh Gym? You are probably thinking What s the point. Aren t there already enough Gyms in Milton Keynes? The sports committee also pondered these very same questions when faced with generating ideas on how best to utilise the newly built sports hall. We soon found ourselves arriving at the same conclusion: YES there is a point - we are encouraging health and well being in our own community and providing the means by which to do it. We hope that the community will appreciate this unusual approach that we have taken by investing in fitness equipment. You will find that committees generally tend to shy away from making decisions that are not the norm or already well tested by other Gurudwaras. However, we thought it would bring a worthwhile asset to our people and our communities future. You may now be wondering That s all well and good but, I already have a Gym membership elsewhere. To answer this we would ask you to think what we are thinking. And here s what we think We want to encourage our community to make the Gurudwara more than just the place that you visit when someone invites you to their programme or more than just the routine of going on Sundays. The committee believes that as a community we can bring some of the facilities that until now have only been available externally, such as Gym s, into the setting of a Sikh community environment. If you don t care to think like us then perhaps you may want to think like one particular Sikh who lives outside of Milton Keynes? Here s what he had to say (not made up, honest ). A sports committee member was speaking to a visiting Sikh after he attended a recent programme at the Gurudwara. During a look around the Gym his comments were very encouraging with statements such as What you re doing here is really good and We don t have things like this at our Gurudwara, I wish we did. We hope that this encourages you to participate with us in our efforts to do more for our own community. We also received feedback from our Milton Keynes community which suggested that there was a need for more Cardio Vascular equipment. This led the committee to recently invest in more equipment. We are pleased to now have the following equipment available for use. Weight Loss / Cardio Vascular Equipment Running Machines Exercise Bikes Cross Trainer Boxing Punch bag Page 10

Body Toning & Strength Equipment *Leg Extension & Leg Curl machine Leg Toner Sit Up bench Twisting Abdominal exerciser Ladies Dumbbells *Pec Fly machine *Lat Pull Down machine Olympic Incline bench 7ft Barbell Curling Bar Increased selection of weight plates Mens Dumbbells * Don t let these professional machines appear daunting to you. They do have adjustable weight stacks and therefore can be used by both men and women according to their exercise objectives. We would encourage the Sikh community to motivate themselves and their relatives to take full advantage of the facilities being offered. Indirectly you will also be contributing to growing the Gurudwara as well. New opening times are: Tuesday (Ladies only) 7.00pm to 8.30pm Wednesday 7.00pm to 9.00pm Friday 7.00pm to 9.00pm To become a Gym member please visit during opening times to sign up free of charge. We continually look to improve the facilities. Should you have any specific opening time preferences or require alternative exercise equipment please post your comments in the suggestion box located in the main Gurudwara foyer. We want to provide the resources you need in your Gym. And finally here s the best news of all. We are running a promotion where members can use the Gym Free of charge until 17 th of July Thereafter members can either pay a fixed monthly fee of 10 or alternatively 1 per visit with no monthly fee. Please be assured that all money for the use of the Gym is donated directly to the Gurudwara. We look forward to seeing you in the Gym giving your support to our community (but most importantly, reducing your waistline at the same time ). The Sports Committee. Page 11

Community Liaison School Visits to Gurudwara Sahib School children from Roman Field School and Chesham School, paid a visit to the Gurudwara as part of their Religious Education curriculum on May 10 and 11 respectively. Mr Pritam Singh and Mrs Kuldeep Kaur Obhi, Mr Nirwer Singh Nandra, Mr Narinder Singh Ubhi and Mrs Balwinder Kaur Manku were present at the Gurudwara to greet them all. About 60 children together with 6 teachers from both schools attended. Mrs Kuldeep K Obhi and Mr Narinder S Ubhi gave a presentation on Sikhism that focussed on the 5'Ks' using the multimedia projectors in the main hall. This was thoroughly enjoyed by the children. It was nice to see that the children were keen as we were bombarded with lots of questions! Giani Malkeet Singh Ji also gave a demonstration of the harmonium. The presentation was followed by snacks and drinks for all the children in the langar hall. Page 12

Georgie Middleton a student at Chesham School has kindly sent an account of his day at the Gurudwara. The Sikh Gurudwara - Kiln Farm Milton Keynes Our trip to the Sikh Gurudwara was a fun and interesting experience. We were greeted by a massive flagpole which had the Khanda on an orange background. On entering the building we removed our shoes and put on little headscarves to show respect. We also gave a thank offering of 1 to the Guru Granth Sahib (the Holy book) which was on a beautiful raised platform in the middle of a very large worship area. The General Secretary gave us a presentation and we were able to ask lots of questions about the religion. The Priest played some musical instruments and showed us the bedroom where the Holy Book is kept at night. The Sikh people were very kind and invited us into their Langar - the community dining area, where they served us a snack. Anyone is welcome in this building as Sikhs believe God created everyone as equals. If your school would like to arrange a visit to the Gurudwara please speak to any committee member during office opening. This was the third school visit to the Gurudwara this year. We feel this is an excellent opportunity for children from all walks of life to learn about Sikhism. RSMK is endeavouring to provide the best possible service to promote cohesiveness in the wider community amongst young children so they can live together peacefully with respect for all cultures and religions. 15 The 2009 Power Conference - 27 June 2009 The conference, promoted the multi-faith presence in the civic and cultural affairs of Milton Keynes. The event was held at the Peace Pagoda in Milton Keynes which caters for many religious denominations. The Sikh community is invited annually to add to the prayers and thoughts from all religions to promote the harmonious society within Milton Keynes and provide insight into how common themes bring cohesiveness and commonality in prayer and reflection. The Sikh message of tolerance of all religions was very eloquently given by Mr Pritam Singh Obhi and Mrs Kuldeep Kaur Obhi who are always excellent ambassadors for the Sikhs in the region. This year however they kindly extended the speech to the youngsters from our community so Jai Singh Basra, Rajan Singh Basra and Saahib Singh Reehal were asked to present scriptures from Sri Guru Granth Sahib Ji. The very successful Speech Competition held in May provided, Jai, Rajan and Saahib with skills to enable them to present very formally to a wide audience. Speaking at the Power Conference was a bigger test in public speaking and raised the bar to the next level. The audience were seasoned speakers themselves with significant experience in their own communities and within Inter-Faith groups throughout Milton Keynes. The most prominent guest being Page 15

the Mayor of Milton Keynes. The remainder of the congregation consisted of people from the Buddhist, Christian, Hindu, Muslim and Pagan faiths. With Mr Pritam Singh Obhi guiding and introducing our speakers, they performed admirably and articulated their scriptures with confidence and ease, consistent with sound preparation. Unsurprisingly, they were the only ones to receive a round of applause from the audience. They represented us excellently and we should be proud that the results of the Gurudwara s Punjabi classes and Public Speaking classes have been blessed by Waheguru Ji so publically. Our sincerest thanks go to the Ramgarhia Sabha Committee, Mr Tarsem Singh Ubhi, Mrs Surjit Kaur Assi and her team of Punjabi Class teachers along with everyone mentioned above who have made this all possible. 18 How to make Gulab Jamun Ingredients: 1 cup Carnation Milk Powder 1/2 cup all plain flour 1/2 tsp baking soda 2 tablespoons butter -melted Whole milk just enough to make the dough For the Sugar Syrup 2 cups Sugar 1 cup water Oil for frying Sugar Syrup (make first and keep warm) To make the hot sugar syrup, mix the 2 cups of sugar to 1 cup of water. Add 4-5 cardamom pods, slightly crushed and a few strands of "Kesar" (saffron). Mix with a spoon and then heat at medium heat for 5-10 minutes until sugar is all dissolved in water. Do not overheat, that will caramelise the sugar. Transfer this hot syrup into a serving dish. Make the dough by combining the milk powder, flour, baking soda and butter. Add just enough whole milk to make medium-hard dough. Divide the dough into portions. Make ball shapes by gently rolling each portion between your palms into a smooth ball. Heat the oil for deep frying in a wide pan on medium heat. Fry the balls stirring often to brown all sides. Do not cook on high as the insides will remain raw. When cooked drain and transfer to sugar syrup. Leave to stand for 2 hours or overnight for best results. Then,.Enjoy! Let Us Have Your Opinion! Did you find the topics informative and interesting? 20 Fundraising Drive for Car Park! We are currently raising funds to construct the car park. The proposal is to re-grade the existing gravel car park, install kerbs and positive drainage system and resurface in tarmac. This will provide approximately 40 car park spaces with two disabled bays. The fundraising thermometer shows our target and the current status. All donations, however big or small, will be appreciated to enable us to complete this last remaining item for the current building project work. If anyone wants to participate or volunteer to organise events to raise funds, please come and talk us.
