What is the Sangat? LO: Understand what the Sangat is Understand why the Sangat is important in Sikhi

What is the Sangat? Sangat is the congregation of two or more people. The Sangat can be anyone we interact with on a daily basis. Can you think of any examples of sangat from your life?

What significance does Sangat have in Sikhi? Sangat comes from 2 words Sang = Gathering of people Gat or Gati = Liberation (become One with God) Sangat = Is a gathering of Sikhs to attain liberation to become one with Waheguru (God)

Different types of Sangat Doing Kirtan (singing) in the Sangat Doing Santhiya (learning the correct pronuncation of Gurbani ~ word of God)

Why is the sangat important? Liberation is attained in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, and the darkness of ignorance is dispelled. p675 So vibrate continually in the Saadh Sangat, the Company of the Holy, O Nanak, and the sins you committed shall be erased. p461 I was overflowing with the filthy sins of countless past lives. But joining the Sangat, God made me pure again. p1178 Summarise what the key themes are from these extracts.

5 Sikh Vices aka 5 Evils aka 5 thieves The common evils found in mankind far exceed this number, but a group of five of them came to be identified because of the major obstruction they are believed to cause to man's pursuit of the moral and spiritual path. Lobh (Greed) Kam (Lust, extreme desire) Moh (snare of worldly illusion) Ahankar / Haumai (ego) Krodh (uncontrolled anger). I was overflowing with the filthy sins of countless past lives. But joining the Sangat, God made me pure again. p1178

5 Sikh Virtues Sat (Truth), Santokh (Contentment), Daya (Compassion), Nimrata (Humility) Pyare (Love). I was overflowing with the filthy sins of countless past lives. But joining the Sangat, God made me pure again. p1178

Why is the sangat important? Physical: Tan Mental: Man Material: Dhan Vand Chhakna (sharing) Sewa (selfless service) = Helping others Guru Amar Das (3rd GURU) taught the idea of daswandh. This is giving a tenth of surplus money to the community. This money may be used for building schools or hospitals or to help those who are poor or suffering.

Who are the nihangs? The Nihang are an armed Sikh warrior order. They are also referred to as Akali (lit. "the immortals")

Why are nihangs important? There are three main points that nihangs always follow which are: to do naam simran, do as much sewa as possible and to be tyar bar tyar (forever ready to defend the helpless) Nihangs do sewa by looking after guru granth sahib ji by showering guru granth sahib ji with flowers and incense and doing chaur sahib and changing the ramaala sahibs on maharaj ji. Nihangs in India hardly get any sleep because they try and do as much sewa as they can all day and all night for the sangat. This may include: the sewa of doing pehra (guarding the premises) around the gurdwara and the camps which they stay at, this is done all night. Nihang singhs remain chakarvarti which means they roam around all over the world. This is because the tenth guru wanted nihang singhs to be all over the world to engage in sewa around the world and to be recognised. Parteek Singh CHCS Nihang Sikh Nihang singhs in the UK travel around the whole of UK to help out in any seva around the country. Nihang singhs in the UK help out by doing some seva like shardaee sewa which is making a sweet milk kind of drink for the sangat.

Sikhs are Saints and Soldiers TASK 1: Watch the video carefully. TASK 2 Write down your answers to these questions: What does Saint- Solider mean for Sikhs? What is gatka? What do students do after gatka? Why does a police officer carry weapons?

What is the Khalsa? The word KHALSA means pure ones. These are Sikhs who want to show their commitment to Sikhism and become baptised in a ceremony that involves amrit (sugary water). These baptised Sikhs are then referred to as amritdhari and are now members of the khalsa panth (brotherhood / sisterhood). They wear the 5ks to show their commitment and identity to the rest of the world. The original Khalsa ceremony was carried out by GURU GOBIND SINGH the 10 th Guru on 30 th March 1699.

Why is the Khalsa so important? Deg Tegh Fateh (Cooking pot, sword, victory) is a Sikh slogan that signifies the dual responsibility of the Khalsa: to provide food and protection for the needy and oppressed. Deg means to cook food to share with others (langar).

Teaches us What are the positive effects of the Sangat? Motivates and inspires us to be better people Positive effects of the sangat Defend the weak & perform sewa Helps you get closer to Waheguru Vichar (gain wisdom)

Explain why the sangat is so important to Sikhs (8 marks)
