While we may think of Advent, Lent and Christmas and Easter as the heavy hitting church seasons, it is Ordinary Time that contains some of the strongest teachings of Jesus.

Jesus gives a new and stronger teaching on marriage. At the time of Christ, a male member of the Jewish faith could get a divorce by simply writing a writ of divorce on paper.

Jesus and Marriage The season of Ordinary Time is hardly ordinary. While we may think of Advent, Lent and Christmas and Easter as the heavy hitting church seasons, it is Ordinary Time that contains some of the strongest teachings of Jesus. Jesus speaks of sin, justice, treatment of our neighbor, and forgiveness in uncompromising ways during the green season. And today s gospel is no exception. Jesus gives a new and stronger teaching on marriage. At the time of Christ, a male member of the Jewish faith could get a divorce by simply writing a writ of divorce on paper. Jesus changes this law by teaching the permanence of marriage. He basically says that couples cannot get divorced. At the time of Jesus a divorced woman could easily find herself destitute and it is likely that he was trying to protect the women of his time from extreme poverty. Today in our society things are much different but the church's teaching on marriage is based on today s gospel. We thank God for the blessing of marriage and for the many couples who have celebrated years of marriage. They are signs of God s love for the world. But we also recognize that there have been painful marriages, some even abusive, among our families and friends. Like Christ, we offer compassion and understanding to those who have had to seek divorce, opening the doors of our church to anyone in need of Jesus, regardless of their marital status. May God bless all married couples with the gifts of love, mutual respect and the gift of forgiveness for long and happy marriages! Fr.
