1 CONNECTIONS Volume 7, Issue 1 January, 2019 Move Over Feng Shui Here Comes the Jesus Way presents that would surround it. In the usual course of the postchristmas tradition of the Von Behren family, when I was growing up, January brought something new. It actually started before Christmas way back at the beginning of Advent. It started because we had to make room in our home for a tree. Not being a normal fixture in our living room, furniture, which had long since made it s mark in the carpeting, had to be repositioned or completely moved to make space for the Christmas tree and more importantly the Once Christmas came and went there was opportunity for things to go back the way they were, or for our family to experience something new. What I mean is: would the furniture go right back into its old carpet ruts or would we rearrange the living room now for the new year? My mother and father had significant influence in that decision but they also invited my sister and I to have our say. More often than not we chose to do something new. Despite the title, this is not an article Continued on page 2 Welcome New Holy Cross Board Members In our November 2018 voters meeting for Holy Cross we elected two new people to our Board of Directors to replace out-going Board Members and we reelected one current Board Member. We also had one board member ask to leave the board mid-term. So as we say thank you to Sheri Meyer, Margie Indahl, and Wayne Sanders for their years of service to our congregation in leadership, we are welcoming to the board Doug Kayser and Mark Freeman (elected in the November 2018 elections), and Sarita Preuss (appointed by the Board of Directors in November 2018 to fill out the unexpired term). The Board of Directors will be meeting this January on a Saturday morning for an extended meeting to welcome the new members, to bring them up to speed on the ministry and leadership of our congregation, and to elect it s officers for the coming year. Your 2019 Board of Directors of Holy Cross are: Diane Zemke, current chairperson Brian McBride, current vice-chairman Matt Regel, current treasurer Jim Clay Mark Freeman Joe Lewis Sarita Preuss Doug Kayser Ingrid Sievers Feel free to contact any of our Board members, and please keep them in your continued prayers. 2 Continued from page 1 about feng shui (so if you don't know what that even means don t worry). I m not concerned with whether you rearrange your furniture, how you do it, or how it will affect your energy, harmony, or good fortune in the new year. However, I am concerned that things don t just go back to normal for you after celebrating the gift of a Savior this year. This does not always happen, but this year 2019 Epiphany, January 6, is on a Sunday. So, we will read the account of the Magi coming to see the child Jesus from Matthew 2 in worship that day. At the end of that account we read, they saw the child with Mary his mother, and they fell down and worshipped him...and being warned in a dream not to return to Herod, they departed to their own country by another way. (Matthew 2:11-12) When the text says they departed...by another way, it is specifically talking about the route of their journey. However, knowing what took place, and that their visit with Jesus culminated in worship and with faith that they did not have before in this Christ Child, it s not far-reaching to say that they also followed a different way after they reached home for Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life (John 14:6). Following Jesus as the Way would have been quite new for them. No longer would they be looking New to Holy Cross? New to Faith? Come to God For Us! Tuesdays at 7-8:30 p.m. January 8, 15, 29, Feb 5, and 12. In the Music Room God for Us is what the Apostle Paul says about our God in Romans 8:31. He is actively engaged in working for us and our future with him. Come learn more about how He does that in this discussion oriented adult instruction class led by Pastor Mike. This is a great class for those new to faith in Jesus, for those wanting to know more about baptism or to join us in the Lord s supper, for experienced Christians looking to learn what s distinctive about Lutheran Christianity, or for long-time Lutherans desiring a refresher in the basics of faith. for their fortunes in Eastern patterns of feng shui, or astrology, or any other quasi-spiritual path to fulfillment. They would instead be beginning the process of reorienting their entire living around Jesus. Rearranging a living room is small potatoes compared to that. Rearranging a living room can be done in an afternoon. This is something that can not be done in one year. It s something God intends to do in us every year. Every time we celebrate the Lord s birth, afterwards something should change. Not everything should go back into the same old ruts. Only now we re not talking about furniture anymore feel free to put that back where it was but be careful not to do that with everything in your life. It s healthy for us to depart Christmas by another way the Jesus way! In Jesus, Pastor Mike LifeLight Our winter study is James/Jude Come study God s Word and allow His light to flood your life. LifeLight provides a great opportunity to benefit from daily Bible study and the privilege of joining brothers and sisters in Christ in fellowship around the Word. 3 Meet Shaun Adams SMP Applicant by Pastor Mike SMP stands for Specific Ministry Pastor and is the designation in the LCMS for Pastors who do their Seminary Education online while serving in a parish setting under another Pastor. Shaun is a member of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church in Spokane who has been involved in their youth ministry for the last number of years. He was identified by his Pastor, Pastor Ryan Tinetti, as someone gifted by God for ministry. Through conversation with the leadership of Beautiful Savior Shaun, Pastor Tinetti, and the congregation of Beautiful Savior have decided to support his application and education through the SMP program of Concordia Seminary St. Louis. (For those who knew Pastor Brian Albrect of St. John s, this is the same program that Pastor Albrecht received his education through Concordia Seminary in Fort Wayne, ID). The intent of Beautiful Savior Lutheran Church is that Shaun Adams ministry would be directed toward church planting in the greater Spokane area. That kind of effort requires the support of multiple churches in the circuit, not just one. A new ministry start/church plant would still be a few years down the road, but there are a couple of ways we, Holy Cross, can lend our support already. First, Pastor Tinetti accepted a call at the end of October to Arcadia, Michigan. As a result Beautiful Savior is vacant and is starting the call process. Since I have been involved in advising Pastor Tinetti, Beautiful Savior, and Shaun in this process they have asked me, your pastor, if I would serve as a mentor to Shaun through his education in this program. With the support of the Holy Cross Board of Directors, I have agreed to do so. This means that over the next few years, provided Shaun is accepted into this program, you will get to know him at Holy Cross as well for he will do some of his ministry training among us. Second, every year Holy Cross adopts students to support who are in the Seminary. If there is someone local, from Spokane, in the seminary we usually direct our financial support toward their education. As Shaun applies for admission in Fall 2019 we ll direct our seminary support towards his education so we ll not only be supporting him but we ll actually get to witness his growth and training for the ministry. Shaun is still in the process of applying for the admission to this seminary program, but the Board of Directors and I would like you to know about this early on so that you, as members of Holy Cross, can begin to pray for Shaun and the possibilities for his future ministry in the Spokane area. A little bit more about Shaun. He is a lifelong Lutheran and grew up in the Spokane Area. For a time his family worshipped at Holy Cross when he was young during Pastor Benning and Pastor Luinstra s ministry here. He spent most of his childhood and teenage years at Pilgrim Lutheran. He currently is a Field Service Manager for Lowes. He and his wife Janna, were married this past year (a second marriage for each). They have a blended family of three children; Delia (10), Noah (8), and Lincoln (8). Both he and Janna are eager to see what God has in store for a life shared in ministry together. CYT Winter Show is Disney s Aladdin Jr.: CYT is a Christian based organization that does theater arts training for youth ages Holy Cross partners with CYT and sometimes hold classes in our building and we have members that participate. 8 Women s Ministry in January But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint. Isiah 40:31 As the calendar moves forward, so does the business of the LWML. We begin the year with the normal business meeting and Bible study on Saturday, January 12, at 10:00 a.m. Please come join us! We will discuss scheduling an activity in February. If anyone has any ideas, please let us know. Dates to Remember: Jan 12: LWML Meeting and Bible Study at 10 a.m. We had a lovely Advent luncheon at the beginning of December, with at least forty women in attendance. An ingathering and offering were collected for the forthcoming Maddie s Place. Their representative, Mariah Hopson, was very appreciative. Thank you, ladies, for your generosity! If any of you ladies are available to help in putting on the coffee and setting out refreshments on the third and fifth Sunday of the month, please let me know. Most of our ladies attend the early worship, which leaves me with this duty each month. In January, I have an out of town commitment on the third Sunday, so I need a couple ladies to step in for me. It would also be nice to have a list of 5 or 6 women that I could call upon to help me throughout the year. Please let me know or put a note in my mailbox. If we start at 8:30, everything is ready by 9:15 for folks who are coming for adult Bible study. The Lutheran Women s Quarterlies have been ordered for the new year. If you would like to reimburse the society for the cost of $5.00, you can give it to our treasurer, Betty Borns. We hope you enjoy the articles and the Bible studies too. May the Lord bless all of you with a renewed strength and peace throughout the new year! Marilee Griffith, Holy Cross LWML President Super Hungry? Super Subs are Coming Again! Super Bowl is not far off and neither are Super Sub Sandwiches as you make your plans for Super Bowl Sunday, plan to get your fare here from our youth. Order forms will be in the narthex by mid- January. Both six and twelve inch subs will be available. You decide what goes on them. Our youth will have them ready for you fresh on Super Sub Sunday morning. A suggested donation amount is on the order form. All donations will support the youth trip to the National Youth Gathering.
