Each 2nd Sunday as we gather to support ministries beyond this community of Faith, you give out your bounty. Each Wednesday, as the faithful group of women (& men) gather to knot and braid fleece blankets, your big-heartedness is made flesh. Time after time, as requests are made to support Relay for Life and Operation Christmas Child, you respond. And, now, during the month of October, as we celebrate BLANKET SUNDAY on October 4th and we prepare to help stock the cabinets of the Berlin Food Pantry on October 11th, 18th, and 25th, I know there will be much given and shared. As we do this, I give thanks to you for kind response and give thanks to God for his bountiful grace and mercy that empowers us to give. Perhaps, during these days, as we consider and give of our wealth of resources, we can pray asking that we always do God s holy will using this prayer of the 16t Century, Ignatius of Loyola: Dearest Lord, teach me to be generous, teach me to serve you as I should, to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labor and ask not for reward, save that of knowing that I do your most holy will. That in 2014 Lutheran World Relief sent $12.4 million; 408,245 quilts; 122,550 health kits; and thousand of baby, school and fabric kits to 571,480 people in 20 countries! Our mission support dollars and those of millions of other Lutherans helped make that happen. One More for Mission Bishop Rhyne is asking every worshipping member in the Synod to contribute one more $1/week to extend our mission and ministry together. Here at Faith, add your $1 to the Benevolence line on your offering envelope and your gift with others will be sent directly to the Synod Office. This will help with the financial stability of the Synod and a vision for how WE might turn things around through our individual giving. Reformation Nearly five centuries ago in Central Europe, an unknown Augustinian monk decided to nail 95 theses to the door of Castle Church in Wittenberg, Germany, sparking a religious renewal felt to the present day. Reformation Day, the anniversary of when Martin Luther began the Protestant Reformation, is an observance remembered by hundreds of American churches in the modern day. While the exact date of Luther s call to theological debate was Oct. 31, or the Eve of All Saints Day, many Protestant congregations choose to observe the occasion on the last Sunday in the month. This year, Reformation Sunday will fall on Oct. 25, with Protestant denominations such as Presbyterians, Methodists and Baptists, recall the past and the theology of salvation by grace apart from the works of the lay. (Romans 3:28). On this Sunday, the Protestant church throughout the world often sings Luther s hymn - A Mighty Fortress is our God, which is based on Psalm 46.

3 Faith s Blessings Page 10 Faith s Blessings Page 3 Operation Christmas Child We are well under way with our collection of items for our shoeboxes. The items being collected for the month of October are t shirts and socks. Remember, we have set a goal of packing 75 boxes this year. Thank you for continuing to donate our wish list items! Items must be received by Nov. 15 as we plan to pack the boxes that day. Why not consider joining us! We also would like to let everyone know that the local Thrivent Chapter has recently granted us $250 to purchase items for the boxes... Thanks Thrivent! October Second Offering The second offering for October, to be collected October 11, has been designated for Gettysburg Seminary. The Seminary provides a vital ministry for the sake of the whole church-the preparation of theologically educated leaders to serve in church and world today, tomorrow and into the future. We can help this ministry with our offering and support seminarians as they respond to the call of the Holy Spirit. Relay for Life The Faith Relay for Life team will be hosting a craft show on Saturday, October 17 from 10 am 3 pm in the fellowship hall. Stop and see all the wonderful things that will be displayed! If you have any questions or need further information, please talk with Sandy Pyle or Shirley Weimer. What are you doing on Wednesday? Do you have some time well, why not join the group of ladies who are meeting every Wednesday in the fellowship hall from 9:30 am 3 pm as they assemble. The blankets are fleece no-sew and are being made now until Advent (the 29th of November.) The blankets will be given to victims of disaster, illness, new babies and other needs as they arise. So, bring your sewing scissors and a lunch and join them for fun, fellowship and help a very worthwhile effort. If you cannot attend, you can help by making a cash donation to Carol Schrock or Elaine Hillegass thanks! Also a big THANK YOU to Thrivent Financial for the $250 grant for this project!! JULY 2015 Council Minutes Council met July 9, 2015 with 10 members and Pastor Winger and Vicar Tyler Graham present. David Pyle had devotions. Council minutes, Treasurer s report and Pastor s report were reviewed, motion made and 2 nd for each and approved. Committee Reports: Finance Tally sheets reviewed Social No report Worship Hymns picked for July, worship services are planned through August. Education On June 6, Gov. Wolf announced that effective July 1, volunteers will not need to pay for background checks Property Windows in Sunday school rooms need looked at. Slabs at pavilion still on to do list, waiting on fit weather. Water in sacristy needs looked at, it is colored from lack of use Youth Youth Gathering July Faith sent a $100 check to Friedens to cover gas for the van. Jacob Maust has been given a check to cover his food expenses Call Committee - Ministry Proposal submitted, accepted and posted Old Business New computers for office; will also check to get a bundle with an LCD projector Narthex window/door construction; still waiting on Somerset Glass God s Work our Hands; adopt a highway? Pr. Winger will speak on Stewardship in September. One More for Mission gets the whole congregation involved vs $20/week Sequanota Day Camp; 26 children participated with much enthusiasm. Day Camp assembled 30 personal care kits Continuing discussion on purchasing a floor scrubber. That discussion led to the janitor s job performance. Some council members will work with him. New Business Somerset Twp. Is putting together a Community Information Guide. Cost for an ad is $270 to $700. Guides last about 4-5 yrs. Cost is $10 which includes lunch. Whose money is it any way. Led by Rev. Nathan Pile Fall Project/Crafting Retreat Oct Bring your own project. Includes 2 nights lodging, meals, internet access and worship and daily devotions. Envelopes are available on the table in the narthex. A $10 donation will purchase 1 blanket. Harvest Home will be observed on Sunday, October 11. Any cash donations received will be sent to the Allegheny Lutheran Home. Non perishable food items and paper products collected that day on also on Sunday Nov. 18 and 25 will be given to the Berlin Food Pantry. Remember that in addition to canned goods, there is always a need for paper towels, napkins, diapers, wipes and personal hygiene products. Thanks for getting your bake on and supporting this outreach ministry to members of our community who very much need this service. If you have any questions or concerns, contact Betty Simmons at Bible Presentation On Sunday, September 13, we presented Bibles to our 3rd grade students along with a Bible carrier with their name embroidered on them. Those receiving bibles were Elmer Plum, Cole Smeak, Shawn Shaffer, Hudson Hillegas and Tanner Friedline. Kenya Presentation You are invited to come hear about the Synod trip to Kenya. Pastor Dena Gable traveled to Kenya in August with two others to represent our Synod on a visit to the Kenya Evangelical Lutheran Church. She will be showing pictures and sharing about the trip, including what the church is like in Kenya. Dinner will be provided (a free will offering will be accepted.)
