5 Page 5 JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY / Year of Consecrated Life February 7, 2016 RICE BOWLS CRS Rice Bowl is a Lenten spirituality program of Catholic Relief Services which offers an opportunity to deepen prayer, fasting and almsgiving and to learn about the struggles of those living in poverty. In 2016, as we celebrate the Jubilee Year of Mercy, Lent is a beautiful opportunity to focus on the corporal and spiritual works of mercy. During these 40 days, we examine our own lives in an ongoing effort to be merciful, just as [the] Father is merciful. And CRS Rice Bowl is a tool to do just this. Through CRS Rice Bowl, we encounter those living in conditions of poverty around the world, and we have the opportunity to practice the corporal and spiritual works of mercy through our prayer, fasting and almsgiving. Participation in CRS Rice Bowl provides tangible assistance to our brothers and sisters in need. 75% of our gifts go to Catholic Relief Services to address global poverty and hunger. 25% percent remains in our archdiocese to support parish programs that address poverty and hunger. Last year, communities in the Archdiocese contributed over $100,000. CRS Rice Bowl materials include great resources for parishes, schools, religious education programs, RCIA programs, and other faith communities. Resources include the cardboard rice bowls in addition to lesson plans, videos, meatless recipes for Fridays in Lent, and more, all available in English and Spanish. 6 Nestled within the industrial city of Vernon lies an unassuming parish community unlike any other in our Archdiocese. It is a place where physical, cultural and language differences fade away under the unity of our faith. That is because Holy Angels Catholic Church of the Deaf is the only parish in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles dedicated to serving deaf Catholics and their families, and it does so with your support through Together in Mission. Under the caring guidance of Father Tom Schweitzer and Deacon David Rose (who are both deaf), Deacon Larry McGloin (father of three daughters, two of whom are deaf), Dr. Tomas Garcia and Mrs. Hilda Jimenez (the mother of two deaf daughters and a hearing son). ASL services are offered with both English and Spanish translation for family members. Nearly 500 deaf or hearing-impaired worshipers and their families gather weekly from as far as Santa Maria and Joshua Tree to celebrate Mass. Dr. Tomas Garcia is the Director of Ministries and college professor of American Sign Language. He recalls a mother who had found out her new born was deaf. She arrived at the parish sad and despondent and was immediately embraced by five mothers from the parish in a group hug, all vowing to accompany her through her journey. Today that mother and her family are active parishioners. As Dr. Garcia said, Holy Angels had given her hope, healing, and most importantly, love. Dr. Garcia also notes the profound transformation many deaf children undergo when they realize that God is love, and that Jesus grace is amongst us. Since many of our traditions and values are passed on orally, these children would not have access to our Catholic beliefs without this parish community. Holy Angels is a beautiful example of what Together in Mission does; to ensure parish communities remain open to those seeking the embrace and comfort of God. Without this support, many of our parish communities like Holy Angels simple could not stay open. Your gift ensures these families and others like them throughout the Archdiocese continue sharing in God s love in the most personal and meaningful ways. Let us all become stewards of God by supporting Together in Mission, and ensuring his presence is felt across our Archdiocese.
