October 28, 2018 Reformation Sunday 8:00AM P Dear Friends in Christ, The Divine Service this day is catechetical in nature, built on the format of question and answer within the context of the liturgy, that we might recall the tenants of our faith. On this day of Reformation, as we ask out Lord to be with us, remembering our Baptism and the blessings God bestows in and through it. Invocation and Baptismal Remembrance P Why is Baptism not simple water only? C Baptism is not simple water only because it is water comprehended in God's command and connected with God's Word. P Why do we Baptize infants in the Lutheran Church? C We baptize infants because in the Lutheran Church. We baptize infants because they are included in Christ's words "all nations, infants are born sinful and are in need of forgiveness, and infants can believe by the power of the Holy Spirit. P What blessings does Baptism offer? C Baptism offers forgiveness of sins, delivers from death and the devil, and gives eternal salvation. Stand The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. P Baptized into Your Name and calling upon You, O Lord, we begin in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. Processional Hymn: A Mighty Fortress is Our God LSB 656 Confession and Absolution P When God is present, we discover our sin. Our only hope is the mercy of God, thus we confess. C What is confession? P Confession has two parts. First, that we confess our sins, and second, that we receive absolution, that is, forgiveness, from the pastor as from God Himself, not doubting, 2
but firmly believing that by it our sins are forgiven before God in heaven. Yet, what sins should we confess? C Before God we should plead guilty of all sins, even those we are not aware of, as we do in the Lord s Prayer; but before the pastor we should confess only those sins which we know and feel in our hearts. P Consider your place in life according to the Ten Commandments: Are you a father, mother, son, daughter, husband, wife, or worker? Have you been disobedient, unfaithful, or lazy? Have you been hot-tempered, rude, or quarrelsome? Have you hurt someone by your words or deeds? Have you stolen, been negligent, wasted anything, or done any harm? Have you sought things that are unhealthy and ungodly? All of this we confess - Silence - P O almighty God, merciful Father, C I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment. But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor, sinful being. P Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. Collect of the Day P Let us pray. Lord Jesus Christ, I give You thanks that my sins are forgiven before Your Father in heaven. By the Holy Spirit, give me grace to trust in Your promises and so live in the freedom and peace that You have won for me in Your death and resurrection. C Amen. Sit Handbell Ensemble: A Mighty Fortress is Our God 3
Old Testament Reading Revelation 14:6-7 6 Then I saw another angel flying directly overhead, with an eternal gospel to proclaim to those who dwell on earth, to every nation and tribe and language and people. 7 And he said with a loud voice, Fear God and give him glory, because the hour of his judgment has come, and worship him who made heaven and earth, the sea and the springs of water. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Choir: God is our refuge and strength, an ever ready help in time of trouble. We shall not fear if the earth is shaken, if the mountains fall into the depths of the sea; Even if the waters rage and foam, and the mountains quake in the surging tide. Congregation sings refrain. Choir: There is a river whose streams make glad the city of God, the dwelling place of the most High. God is within her; she cannot be shaken. God will help her at the breaking of the dawn. Nations are in tumult and kingdoms are shaken; God speaks and the earth melts away. Congregation sings refrain. Choir: Come, see the works of the Lord, The awesome deeds He has done in the earth. He puts and end to wars in all the world; breaks the bow, shatters the spear and burns the chariots with fire. Be still and know that I am God, exalted among the nations, exalted in the earth. Congregation sings refrain. 4
Epistle Romans 3: Now we know that whatever the law says it speaks to those who are under the law, so that every mouth may be stopped, and the whole world may be held accountable to God. 20 For by works of the law no human being will be justified in his sight, since through the law comes knowledge of sin. The Righteousness of God Through Faith 21 But now the righteousness of God has been manifested apart from the law, although the Law and the Prophets bear witness to it 22 the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: 23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, 24 and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, 25 whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God's righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. 26 It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus. 27 Then what becomes of our boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law? By a law of works? No, but by the law of faith. 28 For we hold that one is justified by faith apart from works of the law. Stand A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Alleluia and Verse Holy Gospel John 8:31-36 P The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the eighth chapter. C Glory to you, O Lord. 5
31 So Jesus said to the Jews who had believed him, If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, 32 and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free. 33 They answered him, We are offspring of Abraham and have never been enslaved to anyone. How is it that you say, You will become free? 34 Jesus answered them, Truly, truly, I say to you, everyone who practices sin is a slave to sin. 35 The slave does not remain in the house forever; the son remains forever. 36 So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed. Sit P This is the Gospel of the Lord. C Praise to You, O Christ. Hymn of the Day: Speak, O Lord, Your Servant Listens LSB 589 vs. 1 & 4 Catechetical Instruction {See Booklet} Offering Preparation P From earliest records in ancient times, the people of God worshipped, receiving God s grace and responding with offerings of thanksgiving. Our Lord has instructed us to return to Him our prayers, our lives, and our possessions. We are called to manage wisely our time, talent, treasures, and even our tissue that is our bodies as well as His Gospel in our homes, our world, our work, and His Church. Specific to His call to give treasure to the Church, our Lord gave an Old Testament guide of a tithe or tenth of one s income. Ultimately, however, in the New Testament our Lord calls for cheerful and sacrificial giving. It is important to note that God s people give for very important reasons. We give: C To THANK God for providing for us. P We give: C To BREAK the power of money over us. P We give: C To strengthen our trust in God to continue to provide. P We give: C To acknowledge God s ownership of all that we have. P We give: C To help those in need, both spiritually and physically. P May the Lord give us generous hearts, use and bless our offerings. 6
Offering: Sanctuary Choir: Strength for Tomorrow, Grace for Today..Marty Parks Stand Prayer of the Church P The church gathers her prayers. Individually and corporately we speak to our Heavenly Father as He promises to listen. There are four ACTS of prayer? C The four ACTS of prayer our are Adoration, Confession, Thanksgiving and Supplication P But first to whom only should we pray? C We should pray only to the Triune God. P What are we to include in our prayers when praying for physical blessings? C We must include: "if it be your will, 0 Lord. P Why do we pray "in Jesus' Name"? C We pray in Jesus' Name because He is our mediator--our only way to the Father. P Let us Pray: Petitions Conclude: P O LORD C If it be your will P Taught by our Lord and trusting His promises we are bold to pray: The Lord s Prayer C Our Father Who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Benediction P The Lord bless you and keep you, the Lord make His face to shine on you and be gracious unto you, the Lord look upon you with favor T and give you peace. C Amen. Closing Hymn: Almighty Father, Bless the Word LSB 923 7

Festival of Nativities at Trinity What a wonderful opportunity to meet our neighbors around Trinity by delivering a beautiful postcard invitation with information on Festival of Nativities. Our plan is to deliver 200 invitation to homes bordering our church on Sunday, November 18 th after second service. We will have a light lunch, (sub sandwiches) before we distribute the cards.
