Sixteenth Sunday After Pentecost September 9, :00AM Hymn: Shepherd of Tender Youth LSB 864 Confession and Absolution Stand The sign of the cross may be made by all in remembrance of their Baptism. P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. C But if we confess our sins, God, who is faithful and just, will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Silence for reflection on God s Word and for self-examination. P Let us then confess our sins to God our Father. C Most merciful God, we confess that we are by nature sinful and unclean. We have sinned against You in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved You with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We justly deserve Your present and eternal punishment. For the sake of Your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in Your will and walk in Your ways to the glory of Your holy name. Amen. P Almighty God in His mercy has given His Son to die for you and for His sake forgives you all your sins. As a called and ordained servant of Christ, and by His authority, I therefore forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit. C Amen. 2

Hymn of the Day Gloria In Excelsis 4

Salutation and Collect of the Day P Let us pray. O Lord, let Your merciful ears be open to the prayers of Your humble servants and grant that what they ask may be in accord with Your gracious will; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. 5

Sit Old Testament Reading Isaiah 35:4 7a 4 Say to those who have an anxious heart, Be strong; fear not! Behold, your God will come with vengeance, with the recompense of God. He will come and save you. 5 Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, and the ears of the deaf unstopped; 6 then shall the lame man leap like a deer, and the tongue of the mute sing for joy. For waters break forth in the wilderness, and streams in the desert; 7 the burning sand shall become a pool, and the thirsty ground springs of water; in the haunt of jackals, where they lie down, the grass shall become reeds and rushes. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Psalm Psalm 146; antiphon: v. 2 P Praise the LORD! C Praise the LORD, O my soul! P I will praise the LORD as long as I live; C I will sing praises to my God while I have my being. P Put not your trust in princes, C in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation. P When his breath departs he returns to the earth; C on that very day his plans perish. P Blessèd is he whose help is the God of Jacob, C whose hope is in the LORD his God, who made heaven and earth, P the sea, and all that is in them, C who keeps faith forever; P who executes justice for the oppressed, C who gives food to the hungry. 6

P The LORD sets the prisoners free; C the LORD opens the eyes of the blind. P The LORD lifts up those who are bowed down; C the LORD loves the righteous. P The LORD watches over the sojourners; C he upholds the widow and the fatherless, but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin. P The LORD will reign forever, C your God, O Zion, to all generations. Praise the LORD! ALL: Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen. P Praise the LORD! C Praise the LORD, O my soul! Hymn: Praise the Almighty LSB 797 (Text based on Psalm 146) Epistle James 2:1 10, My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. 2 For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in, 3 and if you pay attention to the one who wears the fine clothing and say, You sit here in a good place, while you say to the poor man, You stand over there, or, Sit down at my feet, 4 have you not then made distinctions among yourselves and become judges with evil thoughts? 5 Listen, my beloved brothers, has not God chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom, which he has promised to those who love him? 6 But you have dishonored the poor man. Are not the rich the ones who oppress you, and the ones who drag you into court? 7 Are they not the ones who blaspheme the honorable name by which you were called? 8 If you really fulfill the royal law according to the Scripture, You shall love your neighbor as yourself, you are doing well. 9 But if you show partiality, you are committing sin and are convicted by the law as transgressors. 10 For whoever keeps the whole law but fails in one point has become accountable for all of it. 14 What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works? Can that faith save him? 15 If a brother or sister is poorly clothed and lacking in daily food, 16 and one of you says to them, Go in peace, be warmed 7

and filled, without giving them the things needed for the body, what good is that? 17 So also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead. 18 But someone will say, You have faith and I have works. Show me your faith apart from your works, and I will show you my faith by my works. A This is the Word of the Lord. C Thanks be to God. Stand Alleluia and Verse Holy Gospel Mark 7:24 37 P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the seventh chapter. 24 From there [Jesus] arose and went away to the region of Tyre and Sidon. And he entered a house and did not want anyone to know, yet he could not be hidden. 25 But immediately a woman whose little daughter was possessed by an unclean spirit heard of him and came and fell down at his feet. 26 Now the woman was a Gentile, a Syrophoenician by birth. And she begged him to cast the demon out of her daughter. 27 And he said to her, Let the children be fed first, for it is not right to take the children s bread and throw it to the dogs. 28 But she answered him, Yes, Lord; yet even the dogs under the table eat the children s crumbs. 29 And he said to her, For this statement you may go your way; the demon has left your daughter. 30 And she went home and found the child lying in bed and the demon gone. 31 Then he returned from the region of Tyre and went through Sidon to the Sea of Galilee, in the region of the Decapolis. 32 And they brought to him a 8

man who was deaf and had a speech impediment, and they begged him to lay his hand on him. 33 And taking him aside from the crowd privately, he put his fingers into his ears, and after spitting touched his tongue. 34 And looking up to heaven, he sighed and said to him, Ephphatha, that is, Be opened. 35 And his ears were opened, his tongue was released, and he spoke plainly. 36 And Jesus charged them to tell no one. But the more he charged them, the more zealously they proclaimed it. 37 And they were astonished beyond measure, saying, He has done all things well. He even makes the deaf hear and the mute speak. P This is the Gospel of the Lord. Sit Children s Message Hymn of the Day: O Lord, Who Brightens Darkened Eyes 9

Sermon Stand Apostles Creed C I believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth. And in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried. He descended into hell. The third day He rose again from the dead. He ascended into heaven 10

and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty. From thence He will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life T everlasting. Amen. Prayer of the Church Sit Offering Stand Offertory 11

Lord s Prayer C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name, Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven; give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen. Closing Prayer P Blessed Lord, You have caused all Holy Scriptures to be written for our learning. Grant that we may so hear them, read, mark, learn and take them to heart that, by the patience and comfort of Your holy Word, we may embrace and ever hold fast the blessed hope of everlasting life; through Jesus Christ, Your Son, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, on God, now and forever. C Amen. 12

Our Merciful Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, Does All Things Well The Lord proclaims the Gospel to those who have an anxious heart to comfort and encourage them with His presence. He comes not only with threats of vengeance and recompense, but with His gracious salvation (Is. 35:4). He opens the eyes of the blind and the ears of the deaf, and He loosens the tongue of the mute to sing for joy (Is. 35:5 6). Like water on thirsty ground, He speaks His life-giving Word to people of all nations. With His Word and the touch of His hand, He does all things well, so that you may now speak plainly (Mark 7:31 37). You confess the truth of God in Christ to the glory of His holy name, and you call upon His name in every trouble, confident that He will hear and answer. As you pray and confess with your tongue, so also love your neighbor as yourself (James 2:8). Show your faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, by loving without partiality. For God has chosen those who are poor in the world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom (James 2:1 5). Today s Radio Broadcast is sponsored by the members of Trinity Lutheran Church. We thank them for their generosity. We have openings in October and November. If you would like to sponsor a broadcast please complete a form and turn it in. The cost of a full broadcast is now $90.
