1 October CLU Sunday/Jubilee Weekend Welcome, Chris Kimball, President of California Lutheran University Li ing Up the Ministry of CLU This Weekend Reforma on 500 Holy Communion Every Sunday at each service 2nd and 4th Saturdays We pray that you will meet the Risen Christ as we worship together. If you do not have a church home, we invite you to worship with our Ascension family again. All bap zed Chris ans who believe that Jesus Christ is truly present in the bread and wine as the word of God declares are welcome to receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion with us today. Children who have not received First Communion instruc on are invited to come forward and receive a blessing. If medical/health concerns give you reason to avoid the wine and bread, please remember the teaching of the Chris an Church that Jesus Christ is fully present in either element alone, bread or wine. (Gluten-free wafers and white grape juice, in the center of each tray, are also available.) May God bless you in your worship today! This series of ar cles was wri en by Pastor Paul Gravrock to help prepare us to celebrate our great reforma on heritage on Reforma on Weekend, October 28th and 29th. In his trea se, On The Freedom of the Chris an, Mar n Luther said, A Chris an is a perfectly free lord of all, subject to none. A Chris an is a perfectly du ful servant of all, subject to everyone. What Luther meant is that to be a Chris an is to be set free in Jesus Christ so that we can live as li le Christs in the world. Too o en we think that freedom is the absolute end in itself. To belong to Jesus, however, is to know that we have been set free for a purpose. Living as Jesus would have us live is a constant (con nued on back) Rose on the Altar Meridian Grace Bartle Born Proud Parents: Rev. 2 Support Those Affected by Hurricanes Irma and Maria! As a Jubilee congrega on, we are keenly aware of the role debt relief must play if there is to be recovery in hurricane-devastated Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. You can help by signing the Jubilee pe on on the pa o today! We are asking the White House, Congress and Puerto Rico s Oversight Board to ensure that aid gets to these afflicted islands in the form of grants instead of loans; that more responsible lending and borrowing protec ons are enacted in US states and territories; and that there be a moratorium on debt payments for severely impacted countries so they may recover and rebuild. We are having a Reforma on 500 Bookstore! The 500th anniversary of the Reforma on is fast approaching (October 31st)! Do you want to learn more about Mar n Luther, his wri ngs, and their impact on the world? Do you want to reflect on the ongoing impact of the Reforma on today? 10 ADDRESS SERVICE REQUESTED Weekly worship Summer hours Saturday 6 pm Country Sunday 9:00 am Tradi onal 10:30 am Contemporary Childcare at all Sunday services Pastoral Care Emergency Line: (805) Isaiah 45:1-7 Psalm 96: Thessalonians 1:1-10 John 20:24-31 Jeremiah 31:31-34 Psalm 46 Romans 3:19-28 John 8:31-36 Reforma on 500 (con nued from front) challenge. Luther said that we are simuljustus et peccator a La n phrase that means we are at the same me jus fied and sinful. Luther, like the Bible, was amazingly honest about the human condi on. The good we want to do, we o en fail to do; and the evil we wish not to do, we too o en do (Romans 7:15-25). Any no on that we can or will become sinless on our own is dashed to pieces. This is one of the reasons that we are encouraged to gather weekly for worship. In our assembly, we are privileged to hear again and again that we, weak and fallible people, have a gracious God who forgives us, embraces us, loves us, feeds us, and is ready and able to use us to live to the praise of His glory. The Chris an assembly for worship is the place where we experience that the ground is level at the foot of the cross that we are all sinners saved by grace.
