1 Niftynotes news & information from the Diocese Compiled by Nicola Mellors Wave of prayer gathering force across the diocese The global wave of prayer known as Thy Kingdom Come is gathering strength in Southwell & Nottingham. Several major events are already in the calendar, and others are being planned by churches from every corner of the diocese, from prayer meetings and prayer breakfasts to a poetry event focusing on the Lord s Prayer. The breakfast is taking place at the Plough Inn, Caunton, on Saturday 27th May at 10am, in the Newark and Southwell Deanery; it is open to everyone. The Hucknall Team Ministry has organised a day of prayer at St Mary Magdalene, based on the Lord s Prayer. People are invited to call in and use creative prayer stations, which utilise clay modelling, flower arranging, and painting. It takes place on Wednesday 31st May from 10am to 4pm, and 7pm to 9pm. St Nic s, Nottingham, is holding an evening with poet Malcolm Guite, which will focus on praying the Lord s Prayer. It takes place on Wednesday 31st May at 7.30pm find more details at Thy Kingdom Come starts on Ascension Day (May 25th) and ends on the eve of Pentecost (June 3rd). The Revd Jonny Hughes describes how a derelict building became the Cof E s newest church. In hindsight, Easter Sunday was the ideal time to launch a church in a renovated building. It was almost as if we meant to do it all along! In reality, it was only nine weeks before that we were sitting upstairs in what was once known as the Neales Auction House, wondering whether it Continued on page 2 In this month s issue: 2 News in brief 4 Events & information 5 Prayer Diary ` 9 Training Courses 11 What s On 12 Comings & Goings

2 2 May 17 News in brief... News in brief... News in brief... News in brief... Continued from page 1 was going to be more than a vague possibility to be in that space for Easter Sunday. It s been quite a journey so far! The adventure began last September, when our planting team arrived in Nottingham from various corners of the country. Some came from London, others from Devon, a family from Durham, and one from Australia via Germany. We began by meeting in our front room to worship, pray and dream together. Quite soon we were joined by others who sensed that they were being called to join in the planting of Trinity. As the gatherings began to grow, we moved out of our house and into the Auction House. But what were we aiming to do? We d tried in vain to construct impressive PowerPoint presentations on numerous occasions up to this point, but nothing seemed to stick. What was the strategy to establish this church? In the end, we sensed God telling us that we were to worship and wait. So that s what we did. We met (usually in the freezing cold), we worshiped, and we responded to what we felt God was saying to us. It was a special time, and foundations of prayer and worship were laid that we continue to hope will be built upon for years to come. All of this hard work, the support of others and some miraculous intervention culminated in us being able to celebrate Holy Week together. Quite aptly, this

There were many highlights; a special sense of the presence of Jesus with us as we gathered for Maundy Thursday; and as we met for Easter Sunday, we were encouraged to see our own congregation worshiping the risen Jesus, joined by guests, including some who had just been wandering past on their way somewhere else. A sign of things to come, we hope. This is only the beginning, but we ve already been overwhelmed by the enthusiasm of our growing congregation, and the support of churches across the city. Thank you for your prayers and support thus far. Please continue to hold us in prayer as we seek His kingdom come in Nottingham as it is in heaven. 4 4 May 17 Events & information... Events & information... Events & informatio Workplace Sunday Workplace Sunday 7th May will be an opportunity to celebrate God s gift of work and to support working people by recognising work as worship. It is an opportunity to encourage workers to make a difference where they are throughout the week, recognising daily work as a vital part of God s big mission. Churches are encouraged to mark this significant day, and a range of resources have been provided to help them: Bishop Paul writes: I am delighted to commend these excellent resources to you in advance of Workplace Sunday. The workplace is the frontline of mission for many of our church members who live out their Christian faith in this context week by week. It is vitally important that we prayerfully support and uphold them in their witness as part of our commitment to sharing the good news and making new disciples. Many of the resources offer a different twist on one element of a normal service. However, there are also some new ideas, like doing a This time tomorrow slot talking to different people in your congregation about where they will be on Monday morning, who they talk to and what kind of situations they face. The Diocese of Southwell & Nottingham is organising the event, in conjunction with Nottingham City Council, as part of the nationwide Foster Care Fortnight, which runs from 8 21 May. Locally there are 626 children in the care of Nottingham City, many living in fostering placements. More details on the St Nic s event to follow soon.

8 8 May 17 World links news - Holy Land Compiled for Nifty Notes Extraordinary moment as church is rededicated The Dean of Jerusalem writes: The Anglican Archbishop in Jerusalem, the Most Revd Suheil Dawani, has rededicated St Saviour s Church in Acre an extraordinary moment for the diocese. Acre has been a prominent city since it was mentioned in the tribute list of Pharaoh Thutmose III in the 16th Century BCE. St Paul visited it (cf. Acts 21.7), referring to it as Ptolemais. The Anglican presence there is more recent - the Church Mission Society opened schools in 1874 and 1887, and in 1946 the foundation stone was laid, with Bishop Stewart dedicating the church in It thrived - the congregation was said to number 500. However, in 1948 the Christians in Acre became increasingly worried about their safety and many left. Over the next 40 years, St Saviour s fell into a state of disrepair. The rededication marks an extraordinary moment - it shows the dedication and the tenacity of the Diocese of Jerusalem; while few in number there are between 5,000 and 7,000 Anglicans - the Diocese ministers in difficult places. The reopening of St Saviour s points to one of the central missions of the Church: to foster ecumenical and inter-faith relationships which are at the heart of the ministry of reconciliation and peace. On that evening, the Greek Patriarch spoke warmly of the renewed Anglican presence in Acre; the Imam expressed his excitement that a new place of worship was now open. Archbishop Suheil in his sermon noted that for Christian communities in the Holy Land there [must be] resurrection after death, light after darkness, and hope after sadness. He went on to state that: If the church of today does not carry this message of the resurrection and hope then our ministry is in vain. Our land needs the spirit of the resurrection and any thinking that does not present hope for our people in the Holy Land will not be a theology either for the present time or for the future. In the Holy Land, where stories of pain and suffering are a daily reality, St Saviour s is a genuine story of Good News. For further details about the Holy Land link contact: David lane@waitrose.com
