1 Volume 7, Issue 1 March-April 2018 Ac k e r m a n v i l l e U n i t e d M e t h o d i s t C h u r c h From the Pastor s Desk ~ When I remember you in my prayers, I always thank my God because I hear of your love for all the saints and your faith toward the Lord Jesus. I pray that the sharing of your faith may become effective when you perceive all the good that we may do for Christ. I have indeed received much joy and encouragement from your love, because the hearts of the saints have been refreshed through you (Philemon 1:4-7 NRSV) As Paul greeted Philemon, so I greet you. I am partial to the phrase, I have indeed received much joy and encouragement from your love For it is true that I have received much joy and encouragement. It is a gift I will carry with me always. What a blessing it is to be your Pastor. It is a blessing I will carry with me as I move on in June. As you will recall, at the October Charge Conference, the congregation voted to move to a part-time pastor. The church s finances could no longer support the salary and benefits of a full-time pastor. At that time my name was put before the Bishop and the Cabinet (all the District Superintendents) for consideration in other ministry settings. On Sunday, February 11 th it was announced that I will become the Pastor of Bensalem United Methodist Church as of July 1, There are still questions to which there are no answers. First, there is as yet no word on who will be appointed to Ackermanville. Dr. Cotto, our District Superintendent, assured Staff Parish that while there had been many conversations, nothing had been decided. Second, at this time, my last Sunday has not been determined. It will be either the second or third Sunday in June. Details are still being worked out. Third, we will manage this transition together with the grace of God. In the meantime, all will go on as usual. We ll worship together. We ll celebrate Holy Week and Easter together. Plans for VBS will begin. We will enjoy the Ladies Tea. While the details are being worked out I would ask that you continue to pray for SPRC, my family and me. My family and I have to begin packing and putting our lives in order in a different way. Staff Parish has work to do to help the Bishop and Cabinet in the appointment process. It can INSIDE: Community Meals 2 Acolyte 3 Anniversaries 3 Birthdays 3 Ushers 3 Cantata 3 Calendar 4 Liturgists 8 be a stressful time, but with all of us working on living in God s grace, it does not have to be overwhelming. I believe with all my heart that God is in the midst of this transition. With God s grace, all will turn out well. There will be plenty of time for us to say good-bye. As a favor to me, please don t rush on this. I ll have ample time to cry later. SPRC will keep you informed of events and announcements. If you have questions, please ask them. Call me or Sandy Collins (SPRC Chair). She and I want to be helpful. We are the ones you should bother with questions and concerns. As the waiting goes on, please keep all of this in your prayers. Blessings, Pastor Alice Ann
2 Page 2 Palm Sunday, Holy Week and Easter Easter is early this year. It is Sunday, April 1 st. The choir has begun working on the cantata for the 10:00 am worship service. Plans are underway for Palm/Passion Sunday where we will remember Jesus entry into Jerusalem and hear the words from Mark s Gospel of Jesus arrest and crucifixion. Holy Thursday (7:30 pm) will be observed differently this year. Instead of meeting in the sanctuary, we will meet in Young Hall and worship around the tables. This will be reminiscent of Jesus and the disciples meeting in the Upper Room. We will celebrate Holy Communion as we remember Jesus last supper with his friends. On Good Friday we will meet in the sanctuary for Tenebrae (8:00 pm). Tenebrae is a service of light and shadows. As the Passion is read candles and lights are extinguished until we sit in darkness to mourn Jesus death and ponder what it means for our lives. I invite you to attend all of the worship services from Palm Sunday through Easter and to invite others to join you. These worship services are an excellent time to invite those who don t usually attend worship. It is the time of year where we hear over and over the words that tell us how very much God loves us. God loves us enough to die on a cross on our behalf. Come, hear, and remember. The Cantata Choir will be performing "Praise the God of Resurrection" during the 10 am worship service on Easter morning, and again on Sunday night, April 8th at 7 pm. YOU are invited to sing in the cantata choir. Just let Del or Lauranette know. Cantata practices will be held Sunday's after worship and Wednesday nights after regular choir practice (approximately 7:50 pm). Hope to see you! Dear Alice Ann and Church Family, It's been a year that Mom went to be with the Lord. My heart is still saddened but I also rejoice that she is free. I was so blessed to have her as a mother and friend! Her estate is settled and God layed on my heart to give some to her precious church family. Please use this gift how ever you feel the need for your church. Let's make Mom smile from heaven on her church family! Thanks and God bless you all, Doreen and Mike Thank you Doreen and Mike. Ackermanville UMC will cherish our memories of Dora Greenleaf and how she touched us in so many ways. Dear Ackermanville UMC Thank you for your faithful support of McCurdy Ministries through the Box Tops for Education programs. We are grateful for your support! Blessings, Pat B. December 22, 2017 THANK YOU. On behalf of everyone at Portland Upper Mt. Bethel Food Pantry, I would like to personally thank each and every one of you for your generous help in making 135 children this year have a blessed and Merry Christmas. Without the love and compassion of my late sister Sherma Godshalk, all the many volunteers at PUMP and all of you, this mission would not be possible. Merry Christmas. In Christian Love, Sharon Sullivan of PUMP

7 Page 7 Something to Think About Prayer Wheel Many thanks to everyone who attended and helped out at Soup Bowl Saturday! A special thank you to the businesses who generously donated toward the success of our event. Mission Statement Growing in Faith by Sharing God s Love. As I was driving home one spring rush-hour, the traffic snarled to a halt. Soon cars were honking and drivers were shouting at one another. Some of us just sat with scowling faces. All except the driver on my right. That driver smiled warmly at me, nodding a greeting. I called across to her, half-jokingly, What s the secret for staying serene in such a traffic jam? Prayer. I use this as a prayer wheel,: she said, pointing to her steering wheel. Then she explained how, as she fingered each ridge of her steering wheel, she would pray for someone. The very next time I got into a traffic jam I tried doing what that friendly driver had done. How quickly a brief prayer for a friend, relative or neighbor popped into mind each time I fingered a ridge on my steering wheel. The second time around my prayer wheel, I added a prayer for the driver in front of me, the one in back of me, and those to my right and left. Soon I d prayed for all the drivers in view. When traffic started moving again, I found that not only had the tension from driving eased, but I was a more courteous driver. How could I be otherwise? Praying for my fellow drivers had given me an extra measure of concern for them. This year's Ladies Tea is Saturday, May 12th, and the theme is "Lavender and Lace". More information to follow later CAMPBELLS (soup) LABELS & BOX TOPS FOR EDUCATION The Campbell s Labels for Education program has just about come to an end. We will continue to send them to McCurdy Ministries/Mission/Schools in New Mexico. Thank you for your continuing support!!
