My help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. (Psalm 121:1-2) I have always loved these couple of verses of scripture. They roll around my head from time to time. I so appreciate them when they come back to me in time of stress or difficulty. These words have been particularly important to me, and others, over the last few weeks. Much has happened in the life of our congregation. Several members have been hospitalized for various medical reasons. Some are already on the mend, some have long roads of recovery and others still have other procedures that need to be done. Over the last couple of weeks the prayer request page has become full with requests for healing and comfort for those in need, and for those who grieve. How good it is that we can come together to share this part of our lives. Along with the difficult things, some good things have been happening as well. Soup Bowl was well attended and raised money for PUMP and UMCOR. The process is well under way for a new church picture directory. While these are all good things, I will admit my favorite new thing is the book drive to collect books, geared to children kindergarten through 4th grade, to benefit Washington Elementary School. The books collected will be distributed to children whose parents participate in a training event provided by Washington Elementary School. The training is to introduce parents to an at home, on-line, educational program to help parents help their children to learn to read, or improve their reading skills. As everyone knows, the better children know how to read, the better they perform in school overall. In addition to the books, BLAST is providing a Nextbook Flexx 10 tablet as a door prize to help tempt more families to attend the training. In order to accomplish anything, God s help is required. How good it is to know that all we need to do is look for it. I started with the words from Psalm 121 because sometimes we need the reminder to actually look. During this season of Lent, as we prepare for the Festival of Easter, let us be deliberate in looking for God s presence and help, not just in the moments of deep distress, but in the moments of joy and hope, and in the moments of everyday life Our...help comes from the LORD, who made heaven and earth. Thanks be to God. Pastor Alice Ann
2 Page 2 One Great Hour of Sharing is now UMCOR SUNDAY Sunday, 26th is UMCOR SUNDAY (formerly One Great Hour of Sharing). Your generous giving to UMCOR Sunday is what allows UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) to act as the arms and legs of Christ s church, moving toward the most vulnerable in their darkest days. Convinced that all people have God-given worth and dignity without regard to race, religion or gender together we are assisting those impacted by crisis or chronic need. Because you give, the United Methodist Church s compassionate response to human suffering continues today: When tornadoes ripped through Oklahoma, we responded When children in Zimbabwe lost parents to AIDS, we responded When a massive tsunami devastated lives in Japan, we responded And when the next mass crisis occurs, we will be prepared to respond. UMCOR will be able to offer aid in Jesus name to those who suffer because United Methodists give through UMCOR Sunday. In fact, it s your generous giving that allows us to respond when disaster strikes. On 26th, please ensure the United Methodist Church can keep helping. Thank you. Bishop s Blog: Black History Month Focus Hidden Figures BY BISHOP PEGGY A. JOHNSON If you haven t already, I encourage you to see the historical movie Hidden Figures. The story plot is based on real events and the lives of three African American women who worked for NASA during the beginning of the U.S. space program. In the 1950s the women who handled the math calculations for the space program were known as the colored computers. The movie portrays day-to-day examples of racial and gender discrimination they initially faced, including disrespect from some white coworkers and others, even from some African American men. Yet they persevered and gave significant contributions to the space program, which could not have succeeded without them. I am grateful that the real-life Ms. Katherine Johnson, one of the three featured in the movie, received the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 2015 from President Barack Obama. That honor and this movie make it clear that these brave women are hidden no more. Yet, people who are hidden figures continue to abound in this world of ours. They are people who have done incredible work for the promotion of good in the world and in the church but receive little or no acknowledgement. Many times, that is due to institutional racism that tends to reward the majority culture at the expense of people of color. Sometimes people become hidden because of their gender, class, ability, orientation or religion. Whatever the reason, the effect is the same: devaluation, invisibility and a huge loss for all of us. That is because when one of us shines, we all shine. But when any of us and our abilities are cast into Slate Belt Free Community Meals 1 st Sunday of every month: East Bangor United Methodist 4:00 pm 6:00 pm nd Sunday of every month: Crossroad Baptist S. 2 nd St., Bangor 4:00 pm 5:30 pm rd Sunday of every month: Ackermanville United Methodist 1410 Ackermanville Rd., Bangor 4:00 pm 6:00 pm th Sunday of every month: First United Methodist 3 rd St., Bangor 12:30 pm -? Washington Elementary School Book Drive ~ We are collecting new, or very gently used, books geared for children in kindergarten through 4 th grade. These books will be given to the children of families who participate in two upcoming training events at Washington Elementary School. These events are to introduce parents to an on-line program that they will be able to use to help start, or improve, their child s reading skills. The deadline for dropping off books is Palm Sunday, April 9 th. Thank you in advance for your generosity and in helping to create an active partnership with our neighborhood school. shadows or marginalized, we all suffer more than we can know. Young people are looking for role models, and we need them in all colors, genders and walks of life for beneficial mentoring and progress to happen. We must acknowledge that everyone is gifted by God, fearfully and wonderfully made, and intended by their Creator to use their talents for the good of all. It doesn t work so well when some people are relegated to stay in the corner or in a separate place, while someone else gets credit for their work. Another lesson of this movie is the importance of people getting out of the way to allow for social change. Had the film s white boss, Al Harrison, kept all the power to himself and others like him we may have never landed on the moon. He broke down barriers to let true giftedness in. This takes humility and courage. Celebrating black history in February and throughout the year is important for everyone because we are all in this world together. As we remember the history and the stories of the past we can celebrate our gains together. And we can accept the challenge to do a better job of bringing our gifted leaders out of hiding, while empowering everyone to achieve for the good of all.

The shape of a cross was drawn on the forehead. 2. Ashes were smeared across closed eyelids. 3. Ashes were poured or sprinkled over the head. The correct answer is ashes were poured or sprinkled over the head. In the early days of the church, pastors did not dip their thumbs into the ashes to draw the shape of a cross on your forehead. Instead, they poured or sprinkled ashes over your head. When did United Methodists start the imposition of ashes? The correct answer is This practice became part of our official worship resources in 1992 when General Conference adopted The United Methodist Book of Worship. It is optional to use it. Does The United Methodist Church have official rules for observing Lent? 1. Yes, members should abstain from meat on Fridays. 2. Yes, members should fast once a week during Lent. 3. Yes, members should abstain from sweets during Lent. 4. All of the above. 5. None of the above. The correct answer is none of the above. The correct answer is None of the above. The United Methodist Church does not have official guidelines on how individuals should observe lent. Some choose to give up a certain food or restrict activities such as television watching, shopping or social networking. Some choose to give away clothing or possessions, or volunteer more, or increase time spent in prayer. What does the term Lent, which comes from lencten, mean? 1. Time 3, Sacrifice 2. Length 4. Spring The correct answer is spring. Lent comes from the Anglo Saxon word lencten, which means spring. The root words mean long days, and this combination probably refers to the increasing daylight at this time of year. Lent s 40 days represent Jesus time in the wilderness, enduring temptation and preparing to begin his ministry. What snack food has significance during Lent? 1. Pretzels 3. Chocolate 2. Popcorn 4. All of the above The correct answer is pretzels. The twisted pretzel is said to have its roots in Lent. According to legend, a 7th century monk made bread from flour, water, and salt no eggs or milk because they were avoided during Lent. He then formed it into the shape of a common prayer pose of the day, hands on opposite shoulders. You have to turn the pretzel upside down to see it. Why do people give things up for Lent? 1. To follow the example of Jesus 40-day fast in the wilderness 2. To help us focus on prayer and devotions 3. To give the acquired savings to the poor 4. All of the above. 5. None of the above. The correct answer is all of the above. Many people give something up for Lent like chocolate, social media, shopping, or a bad habit. These are modern-day adaptations of the spiritual discipline of fasting or abstinence. John Wesley encouraged early Methodists to regularly practice abstinence or fasting as an act of piety, like praying or reading the Bible. He also taught that fasting was best when coupled with acts of mercy such as giving to the poor. Rather than give something up this Lent, you might choose to add a practice during Lent to achieve one or more of the same goals. Continued on page 7

Rarely 2. Twice a month 5 He did not fast 3. Twice a year The correct answer is twice a week. John Wesley fasted from all food beginning after the evening meal through mid-afternoon the next day. He thought the practice an important form of penitence which allowed more time for prayer and believed it was more meaningful combined with giving to the poor. Jesus went into the wilderness to fast for 40 days and nights. Fasting during Lent is a way of tuning in to the Christian idea of sacrifice. The United Methodist Church does not have official guidelines for the practice of fasting. Individuals are encouraged to make the best choice based on their personal situation Coming Soon! McCurdy was started by the United Brethren, and became an EUB mission and school, and is now, of course, United Methodist. Please continue to bring in Campbell s soup Labels for Education, and as the August deadline gets closer, they will also be sent to McCurdy. We will continue to collect BOX TOPS for Education. This has NOT been discontinued, so keep cutting them out and bringing them in. Thank You! Do you buy Tyson frozen items? If so, just clip and collect Tyson Project A+ labels from Tyson frozen item packages. Then bring them into church and put them in the Campbells, and Box Tops for Education jar. For every Tyson label that McCurdy submits, Tyson donates 26 cents to McCurdy Ministries to support their ministries programming. For more information visit: Thank you!
