1 THE HERALD Christ Church Episcopal Parish October / November 2018 Vol. 19, No Stewardship Campaign I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in Me and I in you, you will bear much Fruit. John 15:5 In Scripture Jesus compares himself to a vine and his disciples to the vine s branches in a vineyard. In the same way that the vine bears fruit only through the branches, Christ s work in our world is accomplished only through His followers. This means that as Chris ans, each of us have been called to be stewards of God s gi s and do His work in the world. As a steward of God s gi s, we have been entrusted not to own these gi s but to nurture and grow our gi s so we can use them to further God s kingdom. It is a tremendous responsibility that we know the congrega on of Christ Church parish takes very seriously. Over the past 65 years, Christ Church has shown a commitment to maintaining, nurturing, and loving this church and community to preserve it for many years to come. We have grown and thrived because of the strong financial support and substan al commitments of me and talents parishioners like you have given to this special place. Since 2014, we have seen an increase of almost 15% in total dollars pledged. Your generosity has moved us in a posi ve direc on, and with your con nued generosity, Christ Church can become an even brighter light in our community and our world. We hope you will carefully consider and pray about how you might support Christ Church in the coming year with your me, talent, and treasure. Pledge cards will be arriving soon. However, you may give at any me by visi ng pledge.ccparish.org. Our goal this year is to increase the number of families who financially support Christ Church. Addi onally, we seek to perpetuate the ongoing pledge of our me and talents throughout next year. We invite you to watch as our parish s Vine grows in the Narthex during the next few weeks. As commitments of me, talent, and treasure are received, branches will be added to the Christ Church Vine. Please join us in giving your me, talent, and treasure so we can con nue to do God s work in the world. WHAT S INSIDE? Francis saw the Divine not only in all the peoples of earth but also in all created things, and he sought a reconcilia on of all crea on with both humanity and with God. Part of Francis love for and apprecia on of the environment is expressed beau fully in his Can cle of the Sun. He saw himself as part of the ecosystem. He talked lovingly and personally to the stars, trees, birds and animals; and referred to all creatures and created things as brothers and sisters and therefore all of the environment is worthy of respect. What a joy to share this special service with our furry brothers and sisters! From skits to songs to a brass and woodwind band, stories, gymnasts, pianists, and the vocal debut of our own music director, Tiffany Carter, there will be something to please everyone. Ques ons? 3 Living Branches I am the vine, you are the branches. Those who abide in me and I in them bear much fruit, because apart from me you can do nothing. John 15:5 In a week or so you will receive my le er for this year s annual pledge campaign. This ar cle and that le er are two parts of a single invita on to join this community fully, by generously giving of your financial resources for the building of God s kingdom of love. As we hear the words of Jesus in the Gospel of John, we are told that we are branches of the Vine, who is Jesus, and that by abiding in Jesus we bear much fruit. To abide means that we try and live within the one who feeds and nourishes our soul. It means that we give our en re life to be led in the way of our savior, and by doing so, we will bear much fruit. Fruit in this context is how we share our lives, and by doing so, others may experience the love of Jesus, and want to be a part of that Vine. Bearing fruit is not the same as making lots of money. Fruit is something that is no good to the vine, in fact the vine gives its life to produce fruit. Fruit is that which is shared. It is amazing to consider that we will know that we are branches of the true Vine based on how much we share with others. When you share your financial resources, or your me and talents with Christ Church, you are making it possible for God to be known in our community. This past year we have invited the community to share our space in unprecedented ways. Hundreds of new families have had the opportunity to come close and experience the fruit of 65 years. I know that there are a lot of demands on your financial resources. You generously give to so many important community efforts. Christ Church is different from every other non profit in that our gi s to Christ Church are a way that we return thanks to God for helping us bear the fruit. Those gi s are not connected to our likes or dislikes. We are the branches, the Vine shares its life for us to bear fruit, it is right and good that we return to God a por on of what we have received. The Book of Acts shows how the earliest communi es who followed Jesus understood being branches of the true Vine. In Acts 2:44 47 it is wri en, All who believed were together and had all things in common; they would sell their possessions and goods and distribute the proceeds to all, as any had need. Day by day, as they spent much me together in the temple, they broke bread at home and ate their food with glad and generous hearts, praising God and having the goodwill of all the people. And day by day the Lord added to their number those who were being saved. The story con nues in Acts 4:34 35, There was not a needy person among them, for as many as owned lands or houses sold them and brought the proceeds of what was sold. They laid it at the apostles feet, and it was distributed to each as any had need. As you prayerfully consider your financial giving this year please reconsider what it means to be a branch that bears good fruit, and bears it abundantly. Thank you for the gi s you have shared and for the gi s you will share in the future. Peace, Jeremy+ 3

4 Interfaith Sustainability Coffee On October 10, our Interim Youth Director, Kris na Peterson, joined with other parishes around Lake Oswego along with the Lake Oswego Sustainability Network to discuss sustainability within our churches and how we can support a healthy environment. 5 Book Studies WHEN 11:30 am & 6:30 pm November 21 (3rd Wednesday of the month) WHERE Guild Room Each month a different book and a different way to engage with the community around us. Some discussion will be online and through Facebook. NOVEMBER S BOOK: I m S ll Here: Black Dignity in a World Made for Whiteness Aus n Channing Brown Aus n Channing Brown's first encounter with a racialized America came at age seven, when she discovered her parents named her Aus n to deceive future employers into thinking she was a white man. Growing up in majority white schools, organiza ons, and churches, Aus n writes, "I had to learn what it means to love blackness," a journey that led to a life me spent naviga ng America's racial divide as a writer, speaker, and expert who helps organiza ons prac ce genuine inclusion. In a me when nearly all ins tu ons (schools, churches, universi es, businesses) claim to value "diversity" in their mission statements, I'm S ll Here is a powerful account of how and why our ac ons so o en fall short of our words. Aus n writes in breathtaking detail about her journey to self worth and the pi alls that kill our a empts at racial jus ce, in stories that bear witness to the complexity of America's social fabric from Black Cleveland neighborhoods to private schools in the middle class suburbs, from prison walls to the boardrooms at majority white organiza ons. For readers who have engaged with America's legacy on race through the wri ng of Ta Nehisi Coates and Michael Eric Dyson, I'm S ll Here is an illumina ng look at how white, middle class, Evangelicalism has par cipated in an era of rising racial hos lity, invi ng the reader to confront apathy, recognize God's ongoing work in the world, and discover how blackness if we let it can save us all. Sacred Waters Exhibit Open House Friday, October 26 6:00 pm The opening exhibit, Sacred Waters highlights the works of four Na ve American ar sts. Water is a finite commodity. Na ves consider it to be sacred. As the climate changes droughts will plague humanity. The preserva on and protec on of water has not been part of our thinking in a way which makes sure that water remains pure and safe for us to use. The protest against the Dakota Access Pipeline drew Na ves and other people to bring their voices together to share with us the dangers that we faces with the pollu on of the Missouri and Mississippi River. Sacred Waters honors those voices who were part of that protest and invites viewers to reflect on the sacred beauty of water as seen by Na ve ar sts and to become involved in efforts to find ways to provide water for all of humanity. The exhibit includes works by Mark Shelton, a contemporary Na ve American ar st, who uses intense color fields and textures by layering bits of exo c papers in the construc on of his Na ve American subjects. Mark s pieces reflect moments of tradi onal iden ty offering a prayer, weaving a blanket, reflec ng upon sacred waters. Lillian Pi creates works of fine art that delight today s art lovers, and at the same me, honor the history and legends of her people. She has accumulated a life me of works in a variety of media. Those media include ar s c expressions in clay, bronze, wearable art, prints, glass, and jewelry. The exhibit also includes Roben White, ar st and local ac vist, works with a variety of mediums including oils, acrylics and chalk pastels. Joe Cantrell a photographer uses perspec ve and scope to make us re imagine the familiar scenes of beauty and nature all around us. Dr. Katy Barber will be speaking at the October 26 opening. Barber teaches U.S. West, Pacific Northwest, and public history courses at Portland State University. Her scholarship addresses the survival of Indian na ons in the 20th century Pacific Northwest despite federal and local efforts to conquer and assimilate Indian people. She has researched and wri en about the effects of dam building on the Columbia River on Northwest fishing tribes, the struggle for federal recogni on among tribes in the Northwest, the role of regional indigenous women leaders, and the history of representa on and misrepresenta on of Na ve people in museums and public history programs. THE MISSION OF THE GALLERY IS THREEFOLD: 1. To connect our parish with ar sts of different races and cultures 2. To encourage people to become collectors of art 3. To become a model for churches to begin their own art of reconcilia on galleries For more informa on about the Art of Reconcilia on Gallery, please visit h p://ccparish.org/art of reconcilia on/ 5

7 Marcia McCampbell & Mike Stone at the Christ Church Cares display. Christ Church Cares is Launched! This summer we began plans to enhance pastoral care at Christ Church. We call it Christ Church Cares. We realized that sometimes each of us in our lives could do with a little extra support. And so the idea was born to create a network of people trained to be companions. It is a program of pastoral support, companionship and encouragement. Care Companions will walk alongside people in our community who need a listening ear. They will be available to provide prayer and support for times of pain, loss and anxiety, as well as their triumphs, joys and victories. Care Companions can add a little extra support: perhaps you just moved to Lake Oswego and need a coffee buddy, or perhaps your child has just hit the terrible twos, or you just found out your mother is dying. Whether your situation is small or large, care companions aim to be a helping hand. The first step in the program is to recruit people to be Care Campions. If you have a kind heart and listening ear, please join us by contacting Marcia McCampbell at marcia2europe@gmail.com, Mike Stone at stone.michael@comcast.net, or The Rev. Iain Stanford at curate@ccparish.org Welcome and Hospitality Team Do you have pride in your church? Do you love to build community? Then we need you! We need volunteers to welcome and orient newcomers to Christ Church. As a team, you will show them how to get around and invite them into the fellowship at the coffee hours. There will be opportuni es to be greeters, coffee hosts, and more before and a er all services. Come join us! Please contact the Rev. Iain Stanford curate@ccparish.org to find out more informa on! Christ Church Joins Lake Oswego city wide reading program and Our January 2019 Book of the Christ Church! The Lake Oswego Public Library has selected The Book of Unknown Americans by Cris na Henríquez as the 2019 book for its award winning citywide reading program. Published in 2014, the book is a story of hopes and dreams, guilt and love. It examines life in America today from the perspec ve of various immigrants primarily the Toros and Riveras families while also offering insights into the lives of others living in the apartment complex where it's set. "'The Book of Unknown Americans' is an excellent read," Baars added. "But more than that, we feel that this will be a catalyst for wonderful, wide ranging and provoca ve conversa ons and programs." Now in its 13th year, Lake Oswego Reads is designed to strengthen civic pride, foster discussion among the city's residents, and bring the community together through the common bond of reading. The program turns the library into a cultural hub, with a variety of special events that feature speakers, music, food, art and more. Most of the events are free. Next year's official kickoff celebra on is scheduled for Jan. 7, 2019, at the library. Complimentary copies will be distributed to Lake Oswego Public Library cardholders. Special events will then be held throughout the month of February, including an appearance by the author. *For the month of November, The Well will be on Wednesdays from 6:30 8:30 pm with no Well during Thanksgiving week. 9 Deacon s Corner: Different Meanings for October 8th Wri en by The Reverend Deacon Linda Goertz When your deacon was a li le girl (long, long ago), we got a holiday from school on what was called Columbus Day. We colored or cut out pictures of Indians, se lers, Pilgrims, and the like; we decorated our classrooms with autumn themes. It never occurred to me or probably my teachers that we were celebra ng the me when some of our ancestors took over a place where other peoples had lived and thrived for centuries before. Today s descendants of those indigenous people, of course, have long understood what really happened before and a er As I, slowly and belatedly, learn more about Na ve American history, I wonder how I d feel if explorers from, say, Saskatchewan, Canada to use a light hearted example were to come to Portland, announce they d just discovered it and us, and henceforth let us know that all of Portland s laws, lifestyles, and infrastructure were wrong and that they had the right to change them all to a more enlightened system. (With, of course, the enforcement power of the Moun es and religious authoriza on from the United Church of Canada....) You get my point. In Portland and numerous other ci es and states in the U.S., the second Monday in October is known instead as Indigenous People s Day a small symbolic step that may help to remind us of the long history of our land and its people from centuries before European conquest. I include a few links below if you d care to explore them. Here s a fascina ng site in progress working towards showing loca ons of indigenous lands and trea es worldwide: h ps://na ve land.cal; its blog is h ps://na ve land.ca/category/community blog/ Many churches in North America are using resources like this to acknowledge that we stand on land where indigenous people lived long before our arrival. Clackamas County is the home for Red Lodge Transi on Services, (h ps://redlodgetransi on.org/) a Na ve American led organiza on that provides culturally focused programs for women released from jail, prison, or treatment. The work done at Red Lodge is truly impressive; check out their Facebook page: h ps:// redlodgetransi on/ For those who like to learn context, here s the background of the Doctrine of Discovery (which was the supposed legal basis for the rights of European travelers to claim the lands of others): h ps:// en.wikipedia.org/wiki/discovery_doctrine The Wikipedia ar cle notes, During the General Conven on of the Episcopal Church conducted on August 17, 2009, the bishops of the church adopted a resolu on officially repudia ng the discovery doctrine. 11 Come Share Your Time Outreach Wri en by: Julie Daniels, CCP Outreach Treasurer Big Star Ranch Secretary/Treasurer Big Star Ranch: Located in the Hamlet of Beavercreek, a specially trained herd of horse therapists help students overcome their grief, face their fears, build self confidence, learn to trust, foster a sense of responsibility and develop problem solving skills. A majority of the students come from foster care organiza ons or county program referrals. Big Star s approach goes far beyond simply teaching someone to ride and groom a horse. The instructors begin with the basic fundamentals of living in rela onship with any other creature, including trust, pa ence, listening and many more. Ranch Work Day in July: Our dedicated volunteers completed many large projects. A crew removed stall mats and filled the holes with gravel to level the stalls before re installing the mats. Another crew of four adults, plus the two Daniels boys, headed to the arena to unscrew and flip the plywood on the arena walls. When they removed the plywood, the team found Bible quotes and personal notes from some of our former (and current) students, including one from Rose Daniels. We completely had forgot about them and they were a heartwarming discovery. CCP Outreach Member Steve Whi aker was tasked with crea ng a stability bar in the arena for some of our physically unstable students; it has been a great addi on to the arena. Some other teams put a clean coat of paint on the storage cabinets, washed water troughs, scrubbed the viewing room and cleaned up the pasture. The workday was a deligh ul illustra on of people from many walks of life coming together to support an organiza on that has captured our hearts. Big Star is always looking for volunteers to help in many capaci es (office tasks, stall cleaning, barn upkeep, more). If you are interested in volunteering please contact Barb Knudsen at bigstarranch@gmail.com (503) Christ Church Office Volunteer needed for the church office on Wednesday a ernoons from 1:00 to 4:00 pm. You will answer phones and transfer calls as needed. You will take mail to the post office. You will help direct parishioners and community members to the appropriate staff member or volunteer. Other du es as needed will be given more detailed instruc on from a Christ Church staff member. If you are interested parishadmin@ccparish.org Potluck In The Park (PITP) Needs You! We are in need of someone to work on our Team 2 (Second Saturday of the month) to help sort food. This is done so the Cook Team on Sunday has what is needed for casserole prepara on. This takes about an hour of your me. You arrive at church around 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Get rolling carts from the kitchen and meet the PITP Food Deliverers at the lower church parking lot just outside the office. The van usually arrives between 10:30 and 11:00 a.m. You then take the food upstairs to the kitchen and sort meat and perishables in pans and place in the refrigerator. You also let the Cook Team Leader know what was provided. It s an easy process. If you are interested please contact John Bacialli at If you are new to PITP, John will walk you thru your first week of sor ng. 11
