BE THE CHURCH SERVICE DAY OCTOBER 21, LUNCHES FOR CROSSLINES October 2018 In 2017, seven Presbyterian Churches from across the metropolitan Kansas City area came together to collaborate on the annual Be the Church Service Day on October 22. Beginning at noon, more than 600 volunteers scattered throughout the community to provide meal service, beautify neighborhoods, renovate nonprofits, write letters, pack hygiene kits, prepare for international trips and participate in a neighborhood fiesta. 450 hygiene kits assembled 400 packages of Adult Vitamins and 600 packages of Children's Vitamins packed for the Dominican Republic Medical Partnership (DRM)) 100 Child Health Kits created (healthy practices booklet, powdered milk packet, peanut butter packet, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste) 200 bundles of crayons sorted for DR child health education activities 42 swaddling blankets made for Kenyan babies and 18 for Jewish Vocational Services Refugee Services 300 sack lunches for City Union Mission Hundreds of meals served 6 yards cleaned up More than 25 organizations supported Thousands of lives touched The Be the Church campaign started several years ago with the philosophy that an important part of a church community s worship experience is getting up and getting out to put faith in action and serve. In 2017, more than 25 organizations received volunteers, including local social service agencies, schools, homeless shelters, transitional housing and even their own church buildings, all with the heart of supporting and encouraging our friends in the community. The website will soon be updated with what churches will be participating and what projects each is coordinating. Shawnee Presbyterian Church will be listed as we gather to make 200 lunches for Crosslines after our worship service. Everyone is invited to check out the growing list of churches and projects to consider helping out with other projects throughout the week as well. In Ministry Together, Pastor Craig

2 5 TH SUNDAY GIVING SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 30 TH Shawnee Presbyterian Church will be collecting HUGS (Hats, Underwear, Gloves, Socks/Scarves) for our September 5 th Sunday of Giving. We will dedicate this collection and offering on September 30 th, but you can bring the items in now if you choose. We are collecting sizes for ADULTS and CHILDREN. Thank you! THE NEXT SENIOR ADULT LUNCHEON WILL BE ON TUESDAY, OCTOBER 2ND AT 11:00 A.M.. Senior Adult Luncheon (SAG) will be held the first Tuesday of the month in the Fellowship Hall. Please bring your favorite side dish or dessert. Thank you! Food When We re Fed is a time to remind ourselves to bring food for others every time we gather for communion. To make this even easier, communion is now shared the first Sunday of every month. The next Food When We re Fed will be Sunday, October 7th. Let s take this opportunity to make a difference in the world around us.

WORLD COMMUNION SUNDAY 2018 World Communion Sunday (originally called World Wide Communion Sunday) is a gift of the Presbyterian Church to the larger ecumenical church. The first celebration occurred at Shadyside Presbyterian Church in Pittsburgh, PA, where in 1933 Dr. Hugh Thompson Kerr served as pastor. It was his youngest son, Dr. Donald Craig Kerr, pastor emeritus of the Roland Park Presbyterian Church in Baltimore, who really got the ball to rolling. Dr Donald Kerr was quoted as saying, The concept spread very slowly at the start. People did not give it a whole lot of thought. It was during the Second World War that the spirit caught hold, because we were trying to hold the world together. World Wide Communion symbolized the effort to hold things together, in a spiritual sense. It emphasized that we are one in the Spirit and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Celebration of World Wide Communion Sunday was adopted as a denominational practice in the Presbyterian Church (US) in Churches in other denominations were invited to celebrate with us from the beginning, but it wasn t until 1940 when the Department of Evangelism of the Federal Council of Churches (a predecessor body of the National Council of Churches) promoted extending the celebration to a number of churches around the world that the practice became widespread. Today, World Communion Sunday is celebrated around the world, demonstrating that the church founded on Jesus Christ peacefully shares God-given goods in a world increasingly destabilized by globalization and global market economies based on greed. The first Sunday in October is designated as World Communion Sunday. This year it is OCTOBER 7.

4 HANDS-ON, SITTING-DOWN ; WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 10TH; 10:00 AM We would love for you to help us or just stop by for a few minutes to say Hi! If you want to become better acquainted with each other while working on projects to help others, this is the perfect opportunity. We do hands-on mission projects that can be done while sitting-down. Thank you! Mission Committee PEACE & GLOBAL WITNESS OFFERING; SUNDAY, OCTOBER 14TH A PRESBYTERIAN USA SPECIAL OFFERING In connection with the World Wide Communion one of the Presbyterian USA Special Offerings will be collected in the month of October starting on October 14 th. On October 7 th we will share the cup with all those who thirst for justice and we share the bread with all those who hunger for His righteousness. In a chaotic world, we find strength in knowing that God is always near. Thus, it is appropriate that World Communion Sunday leads to a time when we receive the annual Peace and Global Witness offering as a way of continuing the ancient Christian practice of sharing what we have with brothers and sisters in need. A gift to the Peace & Global Witness Offering enables the church to promote the Peace of Christ by addressing systems of injustice across the world. Mid-Council keeps 25% of this offering for ministries of peace and reconciliation, 50% is used by the Presbyterian Mission Agency to advocate for peace and justice in cultures of violence, through collaborative projects of education and Christian witness (like Charlottesville) and 25% can be kept by the individual congregation. The Mission Committee plans to use our 25% for families and children at risk in our community.

A Few Extra Coins for the Noisy Offering the 4th Sunday of every month Noisy Offering Sundays are making an Impact! *Sunday, October 28th, 2018* Thanks to the donations of pocket change by members and visitors to SPC, donations have been sent to both Hocker Grove Middle School and Shawnee Mission Northwest High School, through our Love Fund program for these schools. School Counselors at both schools use these funds to help students who are unable to pay for lunches, are in need of clothing items, are unable to pay a fee or purchase an item required for a class, are in need of funds for a school activity, or do not have the basics for a school day, such as paper/pens/pencils. We will continue to collect the Noisy Offering on the 4 th Sunday each month, and help to keep the Love Fund for these schools going strong. Again, the participation of the members, visitors, and friends of SPC are making a positive impact on our community. THANK YOU!

Following this date, daylight seems to be returning for more and more of each day. On this night we invite those for whom the holidays are not joyful; are lonely, in mourning, feeling alienated and cast apart from family celebrations; those who are experiencing depression and sadness and yet are often compelled to "put on a happy face" for others, denying their true feelings. If any of this rings a bell or sounds all to true then this service is for you. Come let us recognize our Blue Christmas.
